RealStickman_··on Stop Microsoft users sending 'reactions' to email by adding a postfix header
I learned about this recently when I looked at using beacondb[1] as network geolocation provider.

RealStickman_··on Apple okays Epic Games marketplace app in Europe
Until Android 12 or 13 alternative stores couldn't update apps automatically in the background. And you still need to click "install" for new apps, which isn't the case with Google Play.
RealStickman_··on Apple okays Epic Games marketplace app in Europe
iOS is far less pleasant to use and much of my app ecosystem lives on Android.
RealStickman_··on Mozilla roll out first AI features in Firefox Nightly
Another important part from the article you linked:

> Nightly can be configured by advanced testers to use custom prompts and any compatible chatbot, such as llamafile (discord), which runs on-device open models, including open-source ones.

RealStickman_··on Intel-undervolt: CPU undervolting and throttling configuration tool for Linux
When undervolting with an offset, most of the crashes I had were when the CPU state changed. Opening a browser and playing a video from idle, starting a transcode, stuff like that.

The only way to test is, unfortunately, to use it until it crashes.

RealStickman_··on EU Council has withdrawn the vote on Chat Control
Still, there should be a mechanism to avoid bringing up the same issue every year or two. Maybe 5 or 10 years.
RealStickman_··on Fixing a knockoff Altera USB Blaster that never worked
A lot of good articles on HN get reposted to Lobsters, why should the inverse not also be the case sometimes?
RealStickman_··on Mobifree – An open-source mobile ecosystem
LineageOS recently included the patch to finally allow signature spoofing for microG. I don't think they're actively hostile and there are obviously people who support it.

Afaik Lineage for microG is independent of the microG project.

RealStickman_··on Researchers cracked an 11-year-old password to a $3M crypto wallet
He hasn't needed them the last 10 years so he can probably hold out 10 more years.
RealStickman_··on Mobifree – An open-source mobile ecosystem
NeoStore can do that as well. It doesn't require root, it's simply an option.
RealStickman_··on Degoogled Android – My Experience
Microg.org is correct. The official f-droid client won't care about the signatures, but this is a known issue with 3rd party stores like NeoStore.

RealStickman_··on Degoogled Android – My Experience
You have to add the microg repo. F-droid used to have microg, but it was causing issues in the past.
RealStickman_··on Degoogled Android – My Experience
The microg_installer_revived module isn't necessary anymore if you're using a build from within the last month. The Lineage folks finally implemented signature spoofing for microg, simply downloading it from the official website or f-droid repo works now.

RealStickman_··on Ask HN: Best Open E-Reader?
There are various chinese vendors offering android tablets with e-ink screens. The disadvantage being less guarantees of future updates and some vendors (Onyx, probably others) don't release their device kernels as required by the Linux GPL.
RealStickman_··on You might not want to use your fingertip to unlock your phone
You can also reboot the phone to require the password.
RealStickman_··on Mozilla will be retiring the Mozilla Location Service
Newer versions of microg (I think from 0.28 onwards) are rewriting the location stack and remove the UnifiedNLP interface. Currently only Mozilla Location Services is built into the new stack.
RealStickman_··on LineageOS 21 review: Smartphone sustainability starts with software [video]
Official builds before this could still be made to work with microg using the "microg installer revived" Magisk module. That's how I installed it on my current phone while still getting the benefits of more regular updates.
RealStickman_··on Ollama is now available on Windows in preview
I've had success using my AMD GPU with the OpenCL backend for llamacpp. The ROCm backend had pretty bad performance though.
RealStickman_··on The FCC wants to make robocalls that use AI-generated voices illegal
The government and utility companies here usually send letters to notify of issues or planned maintenance.
RealStickman_··on Nvidia's fat margins are a worrying sign of its market power
> All cheap graphics cards are Nvidia

If you watched any serious review last year you'll notice the AMD GPUs were consistently better value than their Nvidia counterparts. Though the 7000 generation was still very disappointing regardless.

RealStickman_··on Live Map of Swiss Trains
I'm not sure how Statista got their info, but most other countries define "late" as being more than 5 minutes behind schedule. In Switzeland that limit is lower with only 3 minutes not counting as late.
RealStickman_··on Alaska Airlines grounds Boeing 737 Max 9 planes after mid-air window blowout
I just realized Americans would use a different size of football field than the rest of the world.
RealStickman_··on Falsehoods Programmers Believe About Plain Text (2021)
Teams manages to be worse. You can copy text in planner and paste it in the same description box and it will magically go from sans-serif to serif.

I don't know how you can fuck up like this.

RealStickman_··on Evaluating new software forges
I meant protocol.land
RealStickman_··on Evaluating new software forges
The layout of radicle.land is unfortunately pretty broken on mobile.
RealStickman_··on Evaluating new software forges
I'm surprised the author rejected using GitLab because of its Open Core model, but decided foe using Drone CI, which appears to be following a similar model.
RealStickman_··on USB Boot of Multiple ISO Files by GRUB2 Boot Loader
Not sure when they added it, but there's a "wimboot" mode that works for Windows isos. Just used it last week without issue.
