RealStickman_··on VMScape and why Xen dodged it
This made me curious to find out reasons why KVM is so much more popular than Xen. I wasn't able to find anything concrete beyond "KVM is the standard and supported by out tooling", which obviously is the case nowadays, but still leaves me wondering what KVM did so much better than Xen when it first released or if this was just a concidence.
RealStickman_··on consumed.today
I think you can self host ListenBrainz, or use their public instance. I started scrobbling all my music consumption a few months ago.

Being part of MusicBrainz, they also have metadata for most tracks or you can amend it yourself.

RealStickman_··on Everything that's wrong with Google Search in one image
Testing this with Aurora Store and the search terms actually give me the correct results. Another reason to use that over Google Play Store
RealStickman_··on PinePhone Pro [GNU/Linux smartphone] has been discontinued
To be fair to them, they at least tell you that software support is largely community provided. However, you probably won't know how that is in practice until you experience it once or twice.
RealStickman_··on RFK Jr demanded a vaccine study be retracted – the journal said no
I need to get more vaccines, my reception is still terrible in many situations.
RealStickman_··on LunarEngine: An open source, Roblox-compatible game engine
VLC is French, so the US law on software patents doesn't apply to it.
RealStickman_··on German contest to live in depopulated Soviet-era city proves global hit
These right wing sentiments have never been about facts and logic
RealStickman_··on Australia Post halts transit shipping to US as 'chaotic' tariff deadline looms
My favourite example is cables. I can either buy a Chinese-made product locally, or get a similar quality for a tenth the price on Aliexpress.
RealStickman_··on F-Droid build servers can't build modern Android apps due to outdated CPUs
You can still get quad cores, here's an Epyc CPU with four cores [0]

Here's also a recent Xeon quad core [1]

Beside that, could you please show me where the F-Droid build server uses an Oracle Database?

RealStickman_··on F-Droid build servers can't build modern Android apps due to outdated CPUs
The F-Drois builds have been slow for years and with how old their servers apparently are that isn't even surprising in retrospective.
RealStickman_··on F-Droid build servers can't build modern Android apps due to outdated CPUs
1. That's still perfectly possible 2. We're talking about x86_64 CPUs here that have been open to install your own software basically since they existed
RealStickman_··on The Ski Rental Problem
In many stores you can ask for "test skis". These would have been used for a few weeks as rentals and you usually get a significant discount from the normal retail price
RealStickman_··on AWS deleted my 10-year account and all data without warning
relying on random local copies as a backup strategy is not a strategy.
RealStickman_··on Samsung Removes Bootloader Unlocking with One UI 8
Here's an updated list of relatively popular phone manufactures and their bootloader unlocking potential.

RealStickman_··on Graphene OS: a security-enhanced Android build
In newer Android versions, network location with microg requires an additional patch to work. Else you only get GPS.

See note at the bottom here: https://github.com/microg/GmsCore/wiki/Installation

RealStickman_··on 7-Zip for Windows can now use more than 64 CPU threads for compression
Supporting old APIs and additional legacy ways of doing things has a real cost in maintenance.
RealStickman_··on A Canadian's AI hoax duped the media and propelled a 'band' to success
If you're knowledgeable enough in music theory most songs are predictable.
RealStickman_··on Frequent reauth doesn't make you more secure
They could do that by comparing against the old hash and if it matches generate the new hash to store somewhere.
RealStickman_··on Infomaniak comes out in support of controversial Swiss encryption law
Looks like INWX has a website and physical address specifically for Switzerland. I think I'll give them a try.
RealStickman_··on Infomaniak comes out in support of controversial Swiss encryption law
Well fuck, guess I'm moving all my domains again. And I just moved away from Gandi.

Does anyone have recommendations for domain registrars that support .ch and .li domains and ideally also supported by lego (my current acme client of choice)?

RealStickman_··on Tesla has yet to start testing its robotaxi without driver weeks before launch
Remove parking spaces next to tram tracks and increase fines
RealStickman_··on Launching RDAP; sunsetting WHOIS
Off topic thank you for runnig viewdns.info. I don't use it regularly, mainly for the occasional WHOIS information lookup and it has always worked perfectly.
RealStickman_··on OpenAPK – open-source Apps for Android, updated weekly
I've been lucky so far to have banks that don't block my rooted phone, but that is not the case for everyone. With an increasing number of "modern" banks that rely on an app instead of a website as primary interface this could get worse in the future.
RealStickman_··on The “strategic reserve” exposes crypto as the scam it always was
My point is that the USD has some inherent value, while BTC has none.
RealStickman_··on The “strategic reserve” exposes crypto as the scam it always was
USD is backed by the US economy and a significant portion of global trade.

BTC is backed by hopes, dreams and market speculation.

RealStickman_··on DeaDBeeF: The Ultimate Music Player
There's a large and growing number of music players for streaming from your own server. You get the best of both worlds by owning your music and having it accessible anywhere.
RealStickman_··on Show HN: ExpenseOwl – Simple, self-hosted expense tracker
I did that for a while, but I always spent a lot of time retracing my steps to properly label most transactions. I think I'll try the tool listed here, if it is simple enough to manually enter transactions I can do that every evening and get better data in the end than a monthly review.
RealStickman_··on Issues with Color Spaces and Perceptual Brightness
For a slightly humorous explaination and exploration of color spaces, I highly recommend this video.

RealStickman_··on DivestOS ROM shuts after ten years
You can use LineageOS4microg

Relocking the bootloader is a bad idea unless you know it doesn't verify integrity on boot or have some way of updating the keys used (AFAIK, only Pixels properly implement that)

RealStickman_··on Hetzner cuts traffic on US VPSs, raises prices
An EU drivers license should be fine, as that is an official form of ID. But for anyone else, they'd need an international form of identification.
