RationPhantoms··on Stanford CS007: Personal Finance For Engineers
I've found the easiest way to battle FOMO is not to compare yourself between then and now but more like what you would do if you DID purchase the coins in 2010.

More than likely, you would sell in 2010.2. There would be about 100 price points where your body would say CASH OUT. Markets are all about taking money from the inpatient and giving it to the patient.

Just wanted to give you a quick shout out here. Between you guys and Morning Brew, I get my fill of daily succinct financial news/info.
RationPhantoms··on Spotify’s Discover Weekly: How machine learning finds new music
What you're saying flies in the face of modern findings of the power of "crowd knowledge" and is actually wrong. I, amongst others, find the feature incredibly useful so maybe it's a waste of resources on just you.
RationPhantoms··on Is the Rise of Contract Workers Killing Upward Mobility?
I feel an odd magnetic sway towards the future envisioned in Neil Stephenson's "Snow Crash" where the gig-economy IS the economy.
RationPhantoms··on Things cryptocurrency enthusiasts probably won't tell you
But 21.co has a legitimate business model. They should have some sort of 3rd party metric guaranteeing a quality answer but I definitely like the premise.
RationPhantoms··on Malware identified in CCleaner 5.33
It's the software equivalent of a double tap.
RationPhantoms··on Ask HN: Where do you go to trade your cryptocurrencies?
I personally use Gemini for primarily trading Ethereum but dabble with Bittrex and Poloniex (got an account pre-BitLicense).

Poloniex, I don't trust with the majority of my funds for various red-flags that the community has presented and Bittrex doesn't seem to have any retail presence (other than being in an abandoned strip mall in LV).

Gemini is founded by the Winklevi twins.

RationPhantoms··on Ask HN: Where do you go to trade your cryptocurrencies?
For those reading this, Kraken does not (and has no intention too), of buying the NY BitLicense. I had to close my account with them as my address was registered in NY.
RationPhantoms··on Ask HN: Where do you go to trade your cryptocurrencies?
Hey Mason, I can personally vouch for Gemini (being in NY myself). They allow for immediate trading of your ACH deposits, before the money has cleared, which I think is a massive boon to cc-traders.

I haven't had any availability issues with their backend (i.e Coinbase) and their support staff seems responsive to the fact that the trading GUI needs an overhaul (2 separate pages for buying and selling ETH).

RationPhantoms··on I failed to prevent my kid from going to college
I definitely agree that college can be a boon for young-adult social development but I think that should be where the focus is and not the pseudo-benefits of an over-valued degree.
RationPhantoms··on I failed to prevent my kid from going to college
I think a hybrid environment of the frugalness of community college coupled with an apprenticeship is the way to fix this. I agree with you that it's more of a social stigma that you didn't go to college nowadays.

And I also do not believe in 80% of cases that the success of a bachelor's degree justifies the cost.

RationPhantoms··on Don't mine Bitcoin, mine Altcoins
And let's quantify the waste of resources by storing vast buckets of useless data people put on the internet. Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Google Plus. What about the PoP's the house the IP transit traffic? How about the thousands of advertisement/Spam companies that just add to the noise? Telemarketers and their like (legal and not).

Surely there is a better argument to be made here. Speculative "mining" on consumer purchased hardware is hardly near the top of global wasted resources.

RationPhantoms··on Wall Street Banks Warn Downturn Is Coming
It's a self-fulfilling economic model. If enough people, in the crypto community, think that their coin will act as a precious metal then you have an entrenched line of people holding onto the coin waiting for the inevitable rise of the price ashes.
RationPhantoms··on Wall Street Banks Warn Downturn Is Coming
Yeah there have been quantifiable "bubble bursts" multiple times.

It's like multiple, concussive "Stock and awe" campaigns where the price has plummeted by $600 per coin. Everytime that happens, the subreddit for /r/bitcoin posts the national suicide hotline and the price rallies in 4 months.

RationPhantoms··on Wall Street Banks Warn Downturn Is Coming
I'm actually really surprised that Betterment used what was essentially scare-tactics to keep the money in the account.

They showed what our effective short term gains capital tax amount would be as a way to sway you from withdrawing. Negating the fact that they are showing you what your tax amount would be at the highest federal and state tax margin.

Nice to know max tax bill is $500 lower but it gave me quite a pause. I guess it's effective.

RationPhantoms··on Truth Values
When I, attempted, to read this paper I felt as though I was Remy's brother in Ratatouille where Remy is trying to show him the power of taste variance but something internally doesn't compute. It's as if sight is a clear understanding and I'm looking at the subject of the paper through frosted glass.

It saddens me that my mind can't quite grasp it.

Yes, do not mess with the investigative prowess of the Postmaster General. They are pretty amazing at what they do.
RationPhantoms··on The Incredible Shrinking Airline Seat
I am always pleasantly surprised when people in front don't push back their seats. I make sure I don't to the person behind me but it's a domino effect if the person in front does. It's this weird phenomenon.
RationPhantoms··on Home computing for $5/month
It's started for me too. I just got a Pi Wireless Zero and I stumbled trying to explain to my misses what particular reason I purchased. I think I sounded like a sales engineer because I mumbled something like "Cloud", "Decentralized Internet" and Bitcoin. She just walked away.

A genuinely curious question; How is this an improvement on pcpartpicker.com?

With them, I can see completed builds and pictures, compare benchmarks and prices as well as restrict builds to specific parameters.

RationPhantoms··on Blockchain Demo [video]
That actually brings up the idea of sharding which is to assign a node a specific set of transactions and discard the rest. This allows us not to all need an entire record of the blockchain but implementing that into Bitcoin isn't exactly the easiest.
RationPhantoms··on Learning to Code vs Learning Computer Science
> Target breaches

That was plain stupidity and not a direct result of an exploit in software that was written. The malware used the default passwords on the embedded XP Payment software to gain root access and scrape the database.

> healthcare.gov

Although I tend to agree, I think this points more a flaw at the Government contract bid structure versus poorly developed code.

RationPhantoms··on Gestice – Unlock your Android by shaking it whilst wearing a Pebble
Why can't they make the process a little more elegant than a shakeweight-esque motion? How sensitive is the accelerometer inside the pebble? I applaud them for their ingenuity though and I'd like to see them further develop the vision for motion based controls.
RationPhantoms··on Learning to Code vs Learning Computer Science
Although I agree a broader scope is needed when teaching kids to "code", I feel there is a such a threat to digress and swing the learning pendulum in the other direction. Meaning that the kids never get filthy bugs on their hands but end up learning about Silicon Valley Entrepreneurship.

Sometimes it pays to dive right in and let them lead there own way out.

RationPhantoms··on Calculating Bitcoin Arbitrage Profit
I can't really agree with your findings. I still think the largest hindrance to taking advantage of the arbitrage is the international wire transfer fees that coincide with transferring money into the exchanges.

Mt. Gox - Astro-based deposits. Not available for US customers. Kraken (US Based Exchange) - Still waiting on getting their licenses on a PER state basis, until then digital currency can be bought or sold. CampBX (US Based Exchange) - ACH withdrawal only after Dwolla dropped support, only other options are personal checks (requires KYC verification)and money orders which require 4 days for completion. Their volume is much too low for taking advantage of arbitrage.

Coinbase is by far the easiest yet their trades take 4 days to complete if you have a tier 1 account. On top of that they take 1% for every buy and sell of Bitcoin and do not allow you to keep funds within the coin base platform hence no ability to swap funds easily.

I've tried arbitrage but the structure is not there to take advantage of...yet.
