RationPhantoms··on Questions for Cloudflare
> I wish technical organisations would be more thorough in investigating accidents.

Cloudflare is probably one of the best "voices" in the industry when it comes to post-mortems and root cause analysis.

RationPhantoms··on The Baumol Effect and Jevons paradox are related
I've personally used the Lidar sensors on my iPhone with an app like Polycam to some degree of success. I was doing a scan of a massive oak tree in my backyard to plan out the treehouse tab location and associated treehouse for my kids but fell flat after the model was created (Sketchup is truly enshittified). I'd imagine a similar process for creating the "fill" for the void in the wall.
RationPhantoms··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (Nov 2025)
I don't want to get into blockchain-shenanigans but I did love the Folding@home model for democratized compute. Could spare cycles on GPUs at home be used for a P2P network of inferencing?
RationPhantoms··on Who needs Graphviz when you can build it yourself?
I stumbled upon this link that should help: https://text-to-diagram.com/
RationPhantoms··on Power over Ethernet (PoE) basics and beyond
No it isn't. Most MACsec-capable platforms have a "must-secure" or "should-secure" transmission mode.

If the security association isn't completed on a "must-secure" configured port then no traffic is transmitted. One would need access to the pre-shared keys to successfully use the link.

Now, could one perform a side-channel attack of the memory on the camera and get access to them? Maybe.

RationPhantoms··on DoorDash and Waymo launch autonomous delivery service in Phoenix
Some anecdata; E-bikes are definitely used in other major cities. I lived up against the Hudson in Jersey City and worked out of Manhattan and that was the primary means by which Doordash/Ubereats was moved around.
RationPhantoms··on Show HN: PossibleWorldWikis – LLM-based fictional world wiki generator
I don't have any opinions because your site doesn't actually have a demo of what it looks like. I'm brought to a sign up page which gives me pause and tab closure.
RationPhantoms··on Show HN: TailGuard – Bridge your WireGuard router into Tailscale via a container
It's a great way to get around those pesky "Are you actually at your home" nagware that Disney+ and other apps employ as well.
RationPhantoms··on Health Insurance Costs for Businesses to Rise by Most in 15 Years
GLP-1 will help but not completely solve the current obesity epidemic. My source is me being more than 6 month long durations, at maximum dosage, of both semaglutide and tirzepatide. While it's resulted in a solid amount, there is a cap to what it can do where diet/exercise have to take over.
RationPhantoms··on Petabit-class transmission over > 1000 km using standard 19-core optical fiber
Flex Ethernet will allow for that but it's been a long time coming.
RationPhantoms··on Literalism plaguing today’s movies
What was the short?
RationPhantoms··on Early US Intel assessment suggests strikes on Iran did not destroy nuclear sites
I don't know if it's only effective depth of the ordinance that matters here. Positive interference could be used to amplify the explosive wave of the 6 bombs that were dropped with accurate-enough timing.
RationPhantoms··on Trying to teach in the age of the AI homework machine
This is a poor take. They are objectively safer drives then their human counterpart. Yes, with those unfortunate deaths included.
RationPhantoms··on Hollow Core Fiber (HCF)
I'd also argue that the 50ms reduction time benefit with HCF has waned with the introduction of HFT (High Frequency Trading) over LEO links with lasers.
RationPhantoms··on For Many of America's Aging Workers, 'Retirement Is a Distant Dream'
Compared to the rest of the western world, american identity bonds strongly with employment. It's just an unfortunate fact. People find more spiritual grounding with their job than anywhere else. This is just personal anecdata to me but with the eradication of community/third places, people probably look to employment as something to at least do to past the time rather than rot/be lonely.
RationPhantoms··on Johnny.Decimal – A system to organise your life
Can I ask what benefit it provides? I'm genuinely curious what it could potentially provide.
RationPhantoms··on The Generative AI Con
He's a good writer. Even if I don't agree with this opinion on it, I still enjoy reading it. Color me "fell" then?
RationPhantoms··on America desperately needs more air traffic controllers
I couldn't find anything immediately definitive but this 2023 survey of federal workers was quite eye-opening: https://ourpublicservice.org/fed-figures/a-profile-of-the-20...
RationPhantoms··on Macrodata Refinement
I knew of his villainous presence as being the baddie in Knight's Tale. He exuded privilege and eliticism so perfectly. Fantastic actor!
RationPhantoms··on Life is more than an engineering problem
I feel like there is likely far more useful answers in overlooked science then there is in "new" science.
RationPhantoms··on Ask HN: Is wind power financially viable without subsidies?
China has the 2nd largest coal reserve globally. They also produce 61% of their electricity from Coal-fired power plants.

Say what you will about contributing to increasing global greenhouse gas emissions but their energy security is not as dire as you paint it. They're still diversifying it though through hydro/nuclear/wind/solar sources.

RationPhantoms··on Why is homeschooling becoming fashionable?
At Least in the northeast US, there are advanced courses or tracts a student can be placed in if they're above their peers. Is that not the case in your schools?
RationPhantoms··on GPT-5 is behind schedule
Would you trust a ML self-driving algorithm trained on a "digital twin" of a city? I would. I view synthetic training data like a digital twin in which it can provider further control or specified noise to understand from.
RationPhantoms··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
I think I'd pay a premium to ensure the company I'm dealing with is not run by private equity. Is there a way to see that as a common citizen in the US?
RationPhantoms··on If AI chatbots are the future, I hate it
Already feels like they can work around that by having the "Don't wait on hold, we'll call you back when an agent is ready" feature.
RationPhantoms··on Johns Hopkins medical school will be free for most after $1B donation
Most ivy leagues have a minimum family salary threshold for charging tuition; Harvard, Stanford, Yale, etc.
RationPhantoms··on Slack updates retention policy for free workspaces
Another victim to the end of the ZIRP era.
RationPhantoms··on The misunderstood Kessler Syndrome
Genuinely asking, do you think that could be solved by having better orbital visualizations?
RationPhantoms··on Making EC2 boot time faster
More employed eyes on an issue or ability to compensate the best-in-class engineers to take a look.
RationPhantoms··on Why Zig When There Is Already C++, D, and Rust?
I think most recently, I saw Mitchell Hashimoto endorse it on Twitter.
