RandomTisk··on Trump threatens to 'close' down social media platforms
I'm not opposed to it, but I imagine you would have a lot of people very hesitant to put their opinions on record with a system that is controlled by the government. The big benefit with Twitter is it's co-mingled with citizen and government employees alike and I'm not sure how you'd promote a government run system. Governments needs a subpoena to access records from a private company (theoretically) but if that layer of protection isn't there because the system is owned by a government, then I doubt anyone would want to use it for more than press releases, wedding announcements, births, obituaries and things like that.

The problem isn't their legitimacy, it's that there have been numerous stories about one or very few persons affecting hundreds or thousands of votes, basically like an amplification attack on democracy. When mail-in ballots are only a small percentage of the overall votes it's not as large of an issue. What Trump asserted was simply that we'll see a sharp increase in the number of fraudulent votes because the attack surface is going to be exponentially larger.

Trump's assertion is based on the notion that mail-in-ballots see higher rates of fraud than in-person. It's not difficult to see why that would be the case, but I will concede I don't have first hand numbers.

The insidious thing about this situation is that there is now a lot of anger on both sides. If cooler heads had waited a bit longer, collected real data on the rates of voter fraud, actually addressed Trump's concerns about stolen/forged ballots rather than calling him a liar and linking to puff pieces from two of his biggest and unfairest outlets, we would stand a better chance at resolving this amicably.

That is exactly how I see it. I see it as silicon valley employees taking it upon themselves to try to get the last word in with Trump's message. Linking to CNN and WP was just beyond the pale.

Which part are you asserting is factually wrong, that the election that hasn't happened yet will have "substantially fraudulent" mail in ballots?

Or are you asserting that mail-in-ballots are secure or secure-enough to maintain the American democracy?

Then the tweet wasn't 'factually incorrect' as was claimed, perhaps unsubstantiated given past performance isn't a guarantee of future performance but certainly election security is nothing to turn a blind eye to.

Then Twitter has to lose their protections as a 'carrier' and become a publisher with all the regulation that goes along with being a publisher.

Every election has at least one story of rampant incompetence and/or outright fraud where one person is able to alter hundreds to thousands of votes. For elections where it can literally be 50.2% to 49.8%, it can make all the difference.

What was blatantly wrong about it?
RandomTisk··on I was blackmailed – any YouTuber could be next
Does this mean that Google is basically using all their services like Stadia or Fiber to keep people's minds aware of their presence, essentially using these services as their own advertisement outreach while hoping they also return a profit on their own advertisement?
RandomTisk··on Joe Rogan Is the New Mainstream Media
Except he didn't. He specifically condemned them. Some journalist took part of his statement, cut off the rest and riled up a bunch of people over a false narrative. I still see someone in the media who should know better by now repeat this lie on occasion.
RandomTisk··on Joe Rogan Is the New Mainstream Media
Most isolated people on the left still believe Trump was referring to nazi's/white nationalists as "good people" when he made that "good people on both sides" comment. If they would just step out of their bubble for one moment they would realize they've been lied to. NYT articles like this are IMO designed to keep people from wanting to leave the bubble.
RandomTisk··on Caffeine: A vitamin-like nutrient, or adaptogen
I drink coffee/espressos each day, probably too much. Just recently after not having my usual Americanos I had a massive headache before bed. Advil did nothing so I figured it must be a caffeine withdrawal headache. They're hell and there's no way I can sleep with one so I made a shot of espresso and downed it quickly. Within 30 mins my headache went from a jackhammer pounding my skull to a distant woodpecker, and after another 30 mins I was asleep and slept fine. The big confounding factor with caffeine studies might be tolerance.

Link? Also, a major political party used to be pro-slavery, so acknowledging and removing mistakes should be considered a good thing.

My bad, here's a better link. It's hard to find a "mainstream" source because most of the old media is ignoring a lot of newsworthy items these days.

It's widely known that Google/Youtube took down any videos where the name of the supposed whistleblower were being mentioned, at least according to a lot of regular content creators who had videos deleted or shadow banned.

RandomTisk··on TSMC Announces Intention to Build and Operate Advanced Semiconductor Fab in U.S.
I wouldn't shed any tears for the industry if some lawsuits got filed against misleading claims regarding transistor feature sizes. That probably won't happen because feature size isn't a spec requirement for anyone per se, but it would be nice to see on principle.
RandomTisk··on Finding new physics will require a new particle collider
I like her videos because she's refreshingly honest about what is known versus not known. Most (tv)physicists are not.
RandomTisk··on AWS services to avoid
They need to do away with CloudWatch/Logs API Call limits. They actually push users into using Kinesis if they need frequent access to their logs, which adds an unbelievable layer of complexity just for the privilege of avoiding even more latency from using S3 and writing their own scripts/code to collect and pull what they want.
RandomTisk··on Companies consider abandoning open office layouts to prevent disease spread
About 8 years ago I changed jobs and went from a big semi-open office space to my own cubicle in a small department of a smaller building. I was so happy about that, I had to take a picture and send it to some people.
RandomTisk··on California, Oregon and Washington announce western states pact
My Twitter timeline was full of people claiming xenophobia and racism for most of February and some of March, some with claims he was distracting from his impeachment.

There was a coordinated effort by some jouralists to smear Trump as xenophobic and racist for what he was trying to do. Today they're saying he didn't do enough. There were many stories that were essentially down playing the virus and dog whistling to readers about Trump being a racist/xenophobic for his early actions.

Edit: added video showing the media downplaying COVID-19 at late as March 3rd [3].

He wanted to shut down travel from China in January, something he got reamed for politically by the media and the left. Damned if you do and all that.
RandomTisk··on Technical reasons to choose FreeBSD over GNU/Linux
Any Linux or BSD distro could achieve best-in-class documentation for new users by simply adding example usages for most commands to the top of their man pages. Man pages tend to read more encyclopedias than practical guidance, and FreeBSD was no exception last I looked.

Command xyz

Common usage: xyz -s source_ip -d dest_ip:port

RandomTisk··on Technical reasons to choose FreeBSD over GNU/Linux
I wonder if FreeBSD Jails never really caught on that much because of the name.

"95% of the universe we don't understand"

Telephysangelists should also start questioning the 5% of what they do understand. All we hear about is DM/DE as if the underlying assumptions that lead us to believe they exist must, at any cost, be true. It reeks of more lost decades of scientific discovery to me, but then again I'm just a bystander.

RandomTisk··on Posiopaths: Positive only attitude can be toxic
That inner peace isn't a cause for one to put up their feet and not care for the sick or poor or widows. You could theoretically have incredible faith and walk around your whole Christian life not worrying what happens to you, but even then that peace only extends to yourself and you are commanded to love others, love justice, care for the sick, carry your cross, etc. I'd be curious to hear what kind of messages you're getting from missionaries, it seems really odd that this would be their message, but I know from the Joel Osteens of the world they are out there.
RandomTisk··on Why Don’t We Just Ban Targeted Advertising?
That's a little too broad, it's fine to let tech sites run tech industry ads and hobby sites could still run hobby ads, etc.
RandomTisk··on The accusations were lies, but could we prove it?
I'd agree with you, but only where standard constitutional courtrooms are involved. Any system that allows anonymous accusers to negatively affect anyone's life is going to be turned into a weapon against innocent people, again and again and again.
RandomTisk··on NASA to launch 247 petabytes of data into AWS, but forgot about egress costs
Seems like a poor choice. If they're getting an incredible deal with AWS, then fine, but I would be utterly shocked if most seasoned and competent IT professionals couldn't design and build a multi-region storage array for far less than Amazon will charge them.
