RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: Dark Mode for HN?
I wish very much that this'd happen. It wouldn't be hard, either - HN is known as a very light website and in a test [1] I did to see for myself how the light/dark switch worked it added less than 1K of CSS to my page. I've been using Dark Reader (the browser extension) [2] to change sites to their dark modes, but on older computers like my Aspire One from 2008 it can take close to a minute for a page to be converted to its dark theme, on top of the already-long loading times for heavier sites.

Very odd, to say the least. Why are two-hour advertisements possible on YouTube to begin with?

RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: What is the best modern way to do “Keep window on top” in OS X?
> If you're asking for a way to keep any window on top in macOS, there isn't a way.

What an unfortunate lack of functionality. On XFCE, a free Linux window manager, I can right-click a window and select `always on top`. MacOS is a premium product and doesn't offer that.

RandomGuyDTB··on Is NordVPN Safe to Use?
I've heard most (if not all) VPNs log information in order to maintain a profit, even when they say otherwise, and for this reason it's safer to not use a VPN. Not sure if that's true or not but it's definitely something to keep in mind.
RandomGuyDTB··on DHS Ditches Legacy Systems and Goes Puts Biometrics on Cloud
> The cloud-based HART system, which will house data on hundreds of millions of people...

Oh. No. Oh God, no.

> It will also allow the agency to look beyond the three types of biometric data it uses today—face, iris and fingerprint—to identify people through a variety of other characteristics, like palm prints, scars, tattoos, physical markings and even their voices

I'm not entirely sure about their general use of this data; if this is opt-in employee data, fair enough. Seems like a pretty big invasion of privacy to me though.

> But as the agency rolls out facial recognition technology across U.S. airports and increases the use of biometrics at the border, officials are finding themselves constrained by their legacy tech.

Oh. This is that data. We are storing private civilian data on-line.

> HART will be housed in Amazon Web Services’ GovCloud

This is somehow worse than I could have imagined.

> The phase-two solicitation also surveillists DNA-matching as a potential application of the HART system.

Getting worse.

> While the department doesn’t currently analyze DNA, officials on Wednesday announced they would start adding DNA collected from hundreds of thousands of detained migrants to the FBI’s criminal database.

Yep, there it is.

The government is changing the way it stores information it should not have, and putting the information on-line. On Amazon. And is using this data to surveil the American public and to profile immigrants. These former incapabilities weren't "holding them back" - they were keeping the hounds at bay.

RandomGuyDTB··on Show HN: Small Websites
Would blogs such as Donald Knuth's be acceptable? I know his is probably way less than 100K but it looks like all the websites listed are services and news publications rather than actual personal websites.
RandomGuyDTB··on Think Video on Your Phone Is Slow? It’s Not Your Imagination
This has never been a secret. Even in television advertisements for plans like these the fine text says video is limited to DVD-quality (480p).
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: How do you responsibly dispose of an old laptop?
I don't know about any organizations you can donate it to but if you don't find anyone and you gotta get rid of your machine, it looks like you can find someone to recycle it here:

RandomGuyDTB··on [dead]
"This was famously used by Michael Crichton in Next..."

Here's the portion of the book [1]:

'''

Alex Burnet was in the middle of the most difficult trial of her career, a rape case involving the sexual assault of a two-year-old boy in Malibu. The defendant, thirty-year-old Mick Crowley, was a Washington-based political columnist who was visiting his sister-in-law when he experienced an overwhelming urge to have anal sex with her young son, still in diapers. Crowley was a wealthy, spoiled Yale graduate and heir to a pharmaceutical fortune

It turned out Crowley’s taste in love objects was well known in Washington, but [his lawyer]—as was his custom—tried the case vigorously in the press months before the trial, repeatedly characterizing Alex and the child’s mother as “fantasizing feminist fundamentalists” who had made up the whole thing from “their sick, twisted imaginations.” This, despite a well-documented hospital examination of the child. (Crowley’s penis was small, but he had still caused significant tears to the toddler’s rectum.)

RandomGuyDTB··on Chrome hides www and https:// in the address bar again
This is great and all until you (like me) need to be able to differentiate www.example.com from example.com and https:// example.com versus http:// example.com. My website doesn't forward example.com to www.example.com (due to errors on my part that I don't know how to fix, my email is in my profile and if you can help I'd greatly appreciate it).

I don't know if there are any scenarios in which a properly-configured website (mine isn't) needs to differentiate example.com from www.example.com. But I liked the ability to do so easily.

RandomGuyDTB··on 8chan: The far-right website linked to the rise in hate crimes
Yeah, you're probably right.
RandomGuyDTB··on 8chan: The far-right website linked to the rise in hate crimes
Some (two) criticisms of the article:

> "But extremism has been central to 8chan identity since it was founded in 2013 by a computer programmer and self-proclaimed eugenicist Fredrick Brennan."

Brennan himself is both disabled and has said (I can't recall where so forgive me if I'm wrong) that he was just trolling when talking about eugenics. Article says in the next sentence "(Brennan has since distanced himself from his earlier writings and beliefs and has cut ties with the site.)" but I can't help feeling that the initial mentioning of his discussion about eugenics was unnecessary.

> "Protection from Cloudflare"

This entire section looks to me like the article is blaming Cloudflare for 8chan's existence (and subsequently the El Paso shooting). If the author had that in mind they're making pretty big grasps here. Cloudflare has a reputation for trying to support HTTPS for as many sites as possible and offer protection from DDOSing ((disclaimer: I use their registrar and DNS)). This is mostly just my personal thought rather than an actual argument though.

---

I think 8chan is probably the seediest search-engine-indexed site on the web right now. Even members of 4chan's random board, popularized as the shithole of the 'net, disavowed the actions of the El Paso shooter. Cloudflare can choose to tolerate 8chan, and I find that decision to uphold free speech admirable, but 8chan is far worse than the Daily Stormer.
