RandomGuyDTB··on The Chloe 280SE, a New Z80 Microcomputer
It's not the same!

I've done a handful of programming on my monochrome 84+ (kiddie scripts, really) ~~and the screen isn't very good for actual games. Blur is a big issue but it's just a symptom of the fact that the 84+ uses a black-and-white LCD. None of the later versions in the series (with their "hi-res" and color[1]) have that eZ80.~~ Yes they do! Thanks souprock. Guess this point is pretty moot. An 88-key keyboard is still much better than you can get on an 84 though, the 84 seems more like a handheld game console than a real computer when actually working with it.

The Chloe 280SE would be a very sexy option for a Z80 hacker with that VGA-out, provided it's at a reasonable cost.

[1] after working with an 84+ for a year or so in my spare time, it really did seem like the +C was high resolution. I don't have one myself but a friend does and it feels like the Rolls Royce of calculators... not much power compared to regular cars, but it sure looks nice.

RandomGuyDTB··on Programming an HP-15C (2013)
Ah, I forgot all the fun I had squaring EGGOGs.[1] I'm working on fully documenting the MK-52 in English but I've been sidetracked with school.

[1]: for the uninitiated, when you'd do anything meaningful on the MK-52 (or 61 or one of the other ones in the series) you'd get an "ErrOr". the "ErrOr", in cyrillic, looks like "EGGOG" because "r" and the cyrillic g look similar, so a lot of people call them EGGOGs. sometimes you could square them and do other things to mess even farther with the calc. in my research I've found that there are more undocumented functions than documented, a lot have to do with the EGGOG manipulation and isolating them and entering that into a program. wild stuff

RandomGuyDTB··on Drug makers feel burned by string of vaccine pleas
“The only real expertise in the world to make these vaccines in a quantity and a safety environment is in the private sector,” said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Diseases Research and Policy. “If the private sector isn’t fully engaged and involved, it’s a show stopper.”

That doesn't sound very hard to me. Hire people who have the skills necessary, pay them a fair wage (lower probably than they'll make in a corporation, but they'll be working for the people rather than a robber-baron), and let them make vaccines. Aside from the cost, is it really that difficult to do this? We've spent much more on war.

RandomGuyDTB··on Netflix original series no longer get time to breathe
It's always been like that, since when television was mostly free and you watched the same four channels every day unless you preferred the library because you could browse encyclopediae and find one or two specialized books about a topic you were interested in. The 'Net just made us more aware of the latter category.
RandomGuyDTB··on Netflix original series no longer get time to breathe
Netflix's discovery may be terrible but YouTube's discovery is non-existent. It's common knowledge that in order to get views on your YouTube videos, you submit them to Reddit or another platform, because the algorithm will not push your content if you have less than a thousand or so subscribers.
RandomGuyDTB··on Lenovo now shipping Ubuntu on high end workstations in the US
Didn't Europe (maybe someone else) forbid shipping computers without operating systems? Might be because of that.
RandomGuyDTB··on Teens don't have a clue about IT? (2016)
I hate that this is true. I've posted here before on the same topic[1] and although we know a lot of stuff about computers, we don't really grok them. Or at least, not a lot of my peers do, and I'm sorely missing some info myself. My friends just don't care. At all. About anything related to lower level computing. I explain things and they ignore me, even when I try to make it relatable (without being patronizing). I'm glad I'm not a teacher because I don't know how to get people interested in what I'm interested in.

Yeah, with an ASCII mode for compatibility.

The hall of fame includes "Tetyais" and "Boyadt".
RandomGuyDTB··on What is going on at Opera Software?
Not entirely relevant but; RIP Opera. It was a competent browser even after it became Chromium based, now few people trust it and even fewer people use it. Hope some of the features I remember seeing back when I used it, especially the ones in Opera GX, make it to other browsers.
RandomGuyDTB··on Google offers certificate to help IT career growth
Not sure this applies here. This certificate isn't mean to be a one-size-fits-all, it's just to affirm that the holder knows Python and Git.
RandomGuyDTB··on Amazon is about to host a homeless shelter in its Seattle headquarters
"It's not one entity that's going to solve this," [Hartman] said. "It's not on corporations. It's not on congregations. It's not on government. It's not on foundations. It's all of us working together."

While the system (created by governments and corporations) rewards providing housing priced at however much people will pay we won't see much affordable housing. Real estate laws do not reward and have not ever rewarded "working together". If Seattle funneled the money going towards anti-homeless structures to building municipal housing instead this "homeless crisis" would be resolved quickly. It wouldn't fix everything and it'd be just as hard for someone who's both unemployed and homeless to get back on their feet but it would make it easier for them to stay on their feet.

RandomGuyDTB··on Nintendo Switch Lite Already Hacked
The endgame for all this is where we can easily run a payload from the SD card and then launch into an untethered homebrew channel or menu. The jig solution for the Switch was a start but it's impractical at best.
RandomGuyDTB··on The Future of Plagiarism
Yup, even in private code I always add the occasional `/* taken from K&R 2nd ed. */`. Helps when reviewing anyway so you can understand in what context the code was written and how it applies to the current project.
RandomGuyDTB··on The Future of Plagiarism
I think Raval’s case is an interesting one for many reasons. First, Raval bills himself, at least in part, as an educator. Second, the way that this story fits into the larger picture of his actions. Finally, much of the work he does is in areas such as blockchain and machine learning, areas that often don’t have a great deal of public trust.
RandomGuyDTB··on “server” is hard to define
I don't think it's that hard. A server, in all contexts, is a thing that "serves" information or resources. The X server serves a graphical interface. A computer can serve an environment to SSH into. Pegging the definition as "a thing that renders information or resources for use" is useful, and then when more context is needed it may be given - i.e. a web server (a server that serves resources to the web), a graphic server (a server that serves a graphical interface).
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: CS, still a good career in 3-5 years?
Do you recommend any books or lessons online to learn the math you mentioned? Trying to break into it but right now I'm only in Algebra II (MAT 111) in HS so a lot of stuff I look at requires more prior knowledge than I have.
RandomGuyDTB··on ACLU sues Homeland Security over 'stingray' cell phone surveillance
Stingrays have been known to be used by law enforcement for a decade now. It's about bloody time more information than just "they are used" is opened to the public.
RandomGuyDTB··on Tell HN: Kids know what floppy disks are
Getting my A+ now; I haven't seen anything from the 80s pop up (I don't think I've even seen a mention of the Personal System 2 written out). Earliest it goes is probably the dial-up connections. It's a shame that it doesn't teach about floppies anymore.
RandomGuyDTB··on Tell HN: Google should drop Quora from search results
DuckDuckGo is what I use for image search, it works about the same as Google did pre-change.
RandomGuyDTB··on WIKI 2
Interesting. Wiki2 claims to make Wikipedia look better, but in my opinion it looks much worse- skeuomorphic, like a UI from the mid-2000s.
RandomGuyDTB··on Hacker’s Manifesto (1986)
> there seems to be people that are smart and yet still believe one race is more or less than another

then they aren't.

RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: Techno Thriller Book Recommendation
Maybe everyone's read it already, but William Gibson's Neuromancer is a classic.
RandomGuyDTB··on Simple Does Not Mean Ugly
Is it?

I've never had any problem using Craig's List and it just works. There are no hamburgers, no material design, the dropdowns look like dropdowns, and the links look like links. I love Craig's List! It's one of the only shopping/marketplace websites I don't dislike.

My philosophy is that if you want it to have fancy CSS and skeuomorphic buttons, use a CSS extension and make your own CSS for it. Even better - use a browser that lets you edit a page's CSS in WYSIWYG (if there are any).

If Craig's List was suddenly revamped and looked like Amazon or Newegg, I would no longer use it.

RandomGuyDTB··on Tcl: Everything Is a String
That's really weird. I didn't know this was a thing but I had a dream a couple days ago that I was using a language in which everything was a string (like Lisp but with strings instead of lists). Guess I'll have to give it a whirl.
RandomGuyDTB··on Hacker’s Manifesto (1986)
Maybe modern underground hackers are embracing racism and extremism. But think about the disconnect between the media's reporting of hackers and what hackers actually were even twenty years ago. A hacker is, according to the news, whatever makes society hate them more. I doubt anybody smart enough to break something miles away with just a keyboard is stupid enough to believe one race is more or less than another.

Disclaimer: I'm not a hacker.

RandomGuyDTB··on BBC News launches 'dark web' Tor mirror
Possibly the most famous darkweb URL.
RandomGuyDTB··on Reimplementing a Solaris command in Python gained 17x performance gain from C
Interesting. Looks like the reimplementation followed a different strategy. Makes me wonder if a C rewrite of the Python script would be even faster.
RandomGuyDTB··on Ask HN: Why isn't the Hacker News site accessible?
You can always use a CSS re-styler or a screenreader.

I believe the intent is for the user's focus on the article rather than the comment. Google Lighthouse reports are meant to be suggestive rather than to be treated as gospel.
