RamshackleJ··on Some ad-blockers are tracking you, shaking down publishers, and showing you ads
yeah... feels like an arms race.

While things like security and freedom of information warrant technical innovation to ensure human rights its gonna be a hard sell to convince smart people to make more ads.

"Why don't we just innovate and make unexploitable software that does exactly what we want with no unintended consequences" : )

RamshackleJ··on The New Web Typography
I guess font load times > 350ms and typography flickering across the entire page on load is "new".

Its gonna be interesting to see how a unique typographic identity develops on the web but its more of a technical problem than one of design. Technical innovation, not design heavy long form journalism will blaze that trail.

RamshackleJ··on Write code that is easy to delete, not easy to extend
It's kinda sad that no one else seams to be picking up on this. To lead off with that intentionally altered quote and looking at code in terms of how existentialists frame reality is the most significant insight.

edit: Radical Freedom in my programs intensifies

Uhh so how do I use this? the readme makes it sound great but doesn't really give me any instructions
RamshackleJ··on The Surprisingly Innovative Future of Wood
American forestry and wood products is a national treasure. It really does embody what sustainable use of natural resources should be.

Shout out to any one working for/with the forest service. keep it up!

RamshackleJ··on Curated List of Online Courses on Marketing, Design and Self-Improvement
The key to self-improvement is broadcasting to everyone that your a better changed person. Better yet, don't change but just do a better job of portraying yourself in a better light.

welcome to the hell of post-digital living

RamshackleJ··on Why the Assholes Are Winning: Money Trumps All
That is a terrible title to use for that essay.

I'm guessing most people didn't read it through, everything was well written, cited and not vulgar. Ultimately it touches that we need to adjust our values as a society and move away from just raw wealth to more intangible things that are not currently modeled effectively in economics. Things like family, community, feelings of respect and dignity for your self and others.

The title might be off putting but the content of the essay is solid

RamshackleJ··on GitHub is undergoing a full-blown overhaul as execs and employees depart
This article could have been written better. It has two themes going on. Github is restructuring and the lack of diversity in tech.

Why did they unnecessarily mention diversity in the context of the reorganization of github? Because that is the corporate BS that is popular to spout when you are redefining power within your company. Make no mistake github is doing restructuring to position themselves for large corporate contracts, NOT to be a more diverse workplace.

Using injustice to whitewash your redefined power structure is disingenuous.

sad to see github losing its way = (

RamshackleJ··on Watson for President
Excellent! We can finally take the great leap forward from "policy made for the richest corporations" to "policymakers made by the richest corporations". This is the perfect technology to disrupt american oligarchy.

One Corporation, under God!

RamshackleJ··on High Salaries Haunt Some Job Hunters
Building bridges != being a loyal employee.

Pull your weight and support the people around you but don't grovel to your company! You're a free-thinking human being with value creating skills!

Masking how you feel and trying to work the system will only lead to regret. Find out who you are and what your principles are and stand by them, only then will you be able to live with yourself when you get old.

Also work can happen outside of the bounds of a company. Your post makes you sound really burned out, I hope you're doing ok = )

RamshackleJ··on Life is more like Tetris than Chess
Great platitudes! This is either slightly better than a buzzfeed listicle or worse by polluting the collective human consciousness understanding of what life is like.

It shows lack of perspective to try describe existence and life in terms of a game. Read some god damn existentialist or absurdist literature you half-baked philosophical caveman.

I welcome any repartee from the filthy plutocrat lapdogs!

RamshackleJ··on Making a 4K Fractal Movie with Fractal EXtreme
how many levels are you talking about?

I agree the worse floating point precision of GPUs puts them at a disadvantage but they still do better for massively parallel problems like fractal renders. (http://www.bealto.com/mp-mandelbrot_benchmarks.html)

RamshackleJ··on Making a 4K Fractal Movie with Fractal EXtreme
I think it is no question that GPU's handle fractal renders significantly better than the CPU does. If you are rendering a fractal properly each pixel can be computed separately from all others, a problem that is perfect for the massive parallel multiprocessor.

I would even go far to say that with current GPU hardware rendering fractals is "solved" in terms of realtime capability. see: https://www.shadertoy.com/results?query=fractal

I think fractals are still awesome despite being pretty simple these days. They are an excellent gateway into doing programing on the GPU. I think they are exactly the type awe inspiring programs that younger students should be shown.

RamshackleJ··on Anti-Education by Nietzsche, and why mainstream culture does our best thinking
the author cherry picks examples of "mainstream" culture to support his argument.

It also feels like the separation between education institutions and "mainstream" culture is a false dichotomy. Especially when 40%+ of the US population now holds a degree from one of these institutions. While in Nietzsche's day university was a rare privilege today it is not. Claiming that something as prolific is separate from mainstream seems wrong.

nice! really unique form. Shadertoy is the best thing to happen to glsl for years!

RamshackleJ··on Initialization in Go: the power of init()
Absolutely! its definitely a stumbling block when you first start getting into golang.

Are the startup penalties for importing a package really that significant? Are there ways of reducing them?
