Diane Greene is amazing! I think I can listen to her speak all day long
Rajiv_N··on Show HN: progre(c)ss
I think jq's data methods allow you to store any type of object. So in the example above, '60' would be stored as a Number and not a String. When you extract it, you would get the Number and this helps if you want to do any math on the value.

Since you can't really set element attributes to non-string values, trying to sync the 'data' values with element attributes raises all sorts of unwanted problems.

Rajiv_N··on The Only Interview Question That Matters
Qasar's story is amazing and inspirational. Was he able to convey his story in his application to YC and is that the reason you selected him in? Or did someone at YC already know him to be able to truly appreciate his achievement?

I have always found the YC application strange in that sense. So much emphasis is given to the question of the "most impressive achievement", but in order to convey any achievement with context, one needs to be quite verbose with their replies. Given that an application only has few seconds to impress, conveying anything is a challenge. Has YC given much thought to an essay type application?

I am proud of where I am today. I grew up in Mumbai, India (not quite a village). We weren't rich. I still have scars on my right foot from an abscess caused from a piece of glass that had pierced my foot while playing soccer bare feet on concrete. We couldn't afford shoes. Luckily my father's business started picking up around the time I entered engineering school. The plan was for me to graduate with a bachelor's in structural engineering and then we could work together to grow the business further. At 20, I earned my bachelor's in structural engineering. Unfortunately my father had died in an accident at work when I was in my penultimate year of engineering. I managed to get enough resources together to be able to attend grad school in the US. I met my wife there. BTW, she has an amazing story too. We now have a startup (https://magtag.me) that received angel investment recently. We feel like outsiders in the tech scene but our spirits are high and when we look back at our lives we feel nothing but pride.

My life is an ongoing achievement. Would you have time to hear me out?

Rajiv_N··on Two "WontFix" vulnerabilities in Facebook Connect
Can some of the risk be mitigated by sending the user an email to confirm the connection? If the user has a verified email address on file before the connection is attempted, the facebook profile information (in this case the information of the attacker) could be sent to them asking them to confirm the connection.
Rajiv_N··on Interactive Resume
While this format may not work for everyone, for a UI person, I think this is an awesome way to apply. Great Job!

How difficult would it be for you to allow printing in a resume format (hidden div with info, activated using the CSS print layout option???) At least then there is the option of printing your resume from this page directly. You might even be able to provide a link in the corner of the page to activate printing. Just an idea. Good Luck!

Rajiv_N··on Everpix
I like the landing page. As I was reading through, I found something you may want to correct:

"Take more photos anyway! ... so you can _you_ enjoy all ..."

There is an additional "you" in this sentence. Just to clarify, I am not trying to offend anyone here, just trying to help. I think landing pages are important.

Good luck!

Rajiv_N··on Jessica Livingston: What Goes Wrong
Wow! Thanks for replying. I have already been down-voted once for what I posted and was beginning to think my comment was a huge mistake.

As hackers we get trained to look at details. So I was hoping others on "Hacker News" would understand where I was coming from. It's not about right or wrong. It's not about ego. I just thought I could help.

Rajiv_N··on Jessica Livingston: What Goes Wrong
I know this is a minor issue. But when I publish something I want people to inform me of problems. Please note that I don't mean to be disrespectful and just want to help. So here goes:

3rd sentence: "There's a talk I've always want to give at the beginning of each batch...". I think this should be either "I've always wanted to..." or "I always want to..." right?

Rajiv_N··on Favicons Next To External Links
FWIW, the google service mentioned in the article works via https as well. [https://www.google.com/s2/u/0/favicons?domain=css-tricks.com]

I think the best way to handle this would be to remove the scheme from the background url. So it would look like `background: "url(//www.google.com/s2...")`. This would accommodate both schemes.

Rajiv_N··on The Case Against Google
"imagine you woke up tomorrow and there was no google". So you mean there would be no analytics (something gizmodo probably uses), no gmail, no google docs, no code.google.com and on top of it I would have to use Bing! That seems like apocalypse to me.

Having a single privacy policy is not that bad. Surely, we need to be wary of google overreaching, but the world is still better off with google than without it.

Rajiv_N··on Paul Graham: Why Y Combinator Replaces The Traditional Corporation
Aha! Thanks for the explanation. Now I get it.
Rajiv_N··on Paul Graham: Why Y Combinator Replaces The Traditional Corporation
"Graham is the cofounder of Y Combinator, the investment firm that plugs seed money ($18,000 on average) into early stage startups in exchange for mentorship and access to its ever-growing network of alumni."

Maybe I'm not understanding this right, but the phrase "in exchange for", seems like it should have read "in addition to". Can someone please clarify?

Rajiv_N··on Bootstrap's maintainer hates the semicolon
The spec has provisions for automatic semicolon insertion that need to be considered carefully before deciding to completely ignore them. Now consider that http://twitter.github.com/bootstrap/index.html says the following:

"Bootstrap is designed to help people of all skill level—designer or developer, huge nerd or early beginner. Use it as a complete kit or use to start something more complex."

So: 1. "illiterates" are welcome to use it. 2. If the goals are to be met, do not assume anything that can be interpreted differently by different players.

Rajiv_N··on Bootstrap's maintainer hates the semicolon
I have created a repo at git://github.com/rajivnavada/bootstrap.git that addresses this issue in the Makefile.

Basically, I added a 'proper' target that 'bootstrap' depends on. This target simply adds the semicolon to the end of the file. Hope it helps those of you having problems.

Rajiv_N··on Bootstrap's maintainer hates the semicolon
Yeah, I've been thinking about doing this. I was kinda hoping that the missing semicolons were just an oversight on the bootstrap teams part.

Now that I know there is some demand for a branch of this sort, I'll share it ASAP.

EDIT: the repo is at https://github.com/rajivnavada/bootstrap

Rajiv_N··on Bootstrap's maintainer hates the semicolon
Thanks for drawing my attention to this. Currently, I maintain a separate branch simply for adding the missing semicolons so that I can link the individual bootstrap files with my project. It's been quite annoying and I now know that the annoyance may not go away anytime soon.

I hate these ideologues. But this is the trouble with JS I guess. I actually love javascript because of the highly dynamic nature of it. But that dynamism also lends itself to these kind of problems. I don't know of any other language where people can CHOOSE to follow syntax. Part of the problem is the awkward interpreter specs I guess. But also, with JS seems like everyone has an opinion :)

Rajiv_N··on A "Moneyball" statician predicted Jeremy Lin's success 2 years ago
I think you are over-analyzing. Like others have said in this thread, TO's are expected from PG's. While, these stats need to be considered, you should also consider the timing of these turnovers. If his team is up 15 with 1 minute to go and he turns the ball over because he was trying to test a play etc... that TO should not be given the same weight as the others.

I think the most important stat is scoring efficiency (or FG percentage). Against the Lakers yesterday, he was at 56.5% for the game (scoring 38 points). That is commendable given that it is against the Lakers.

Rajiv_N··on The Absolute Minimum Every Software Developer Must Know About Unicode
When I was beginning to learn HTML, this article helped me get a grasp over encodings etc... Thanks @spolsky. I started following your blog after reading this :)
Rajiv_N··on Poll: Should we rename Amber.js?
Is the SC namespace going to stay or is the code going to be refactored (ex: SC.Object becomes A.Object)? Just curious.

For the name, how about dotbind.js :)? (I LOVE SC.Binding)

Rajiv_N··on Amon - web application debugging and monitoring toolkit
Got it! Thanks for the explanation. Makes sense.
Rajiv_N··on Amon - web application debugging and monitoring toolkit
:) Thanks for sharing your work. If you have the time could you elaborate on why Redis is not good for Rails exceptions?
Rajiv_N··on Amon - web application debugging and monitoring toolkit
I especially like the logging feature. Haven't had the chance to look at the code yet but how tightly coupled to mongodb is this? Would it be relatively easy to replace the store with redis?
Rajiv_N··on Who is the real Mark Zuckerberg?
In other words, he feels/felt that facebook is worth a lot more than $15B. I don't use facebook but I find this to be the most admirable part of facebook's evolution. For someone in their early twenties to have that sort of conviction about the worth of their product is remarkable, don't you think?
Rajiv_N··on Windows Phone is currently five times more profitable for us than the iPhone
I would like to know what the development time difference is between these platforms. Also, what is the WP7 SDK like?

For a single developer this could be a good time to write WP7 apps. But iOS is so attractive because of its SDK and the wealth of third party libraries available for developers to leverage.

Rajiv_N··on Design for Developers
Thanks for the presentation. It was awesome!
Rajiv_N··on Student can't afford tablet for girlfriend, so builds her one for $125
Kudos to the kid for doing this. Certainly better than selling your kidney to buy an iPad2 (http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2011/06/02/boy-sells-kidney-to-b...)

On a side note, is that an apple logo I see at the bottom of the tablet? Wonder how apple feels about that? :)

Rajiv_N··on Fun With Numbers
Your argument would almost be a good one if NPD had not used quotes such as:

“According to NPD’s Consumer Tracking Service, 76 percent of consumers who purchased a non-Apple tablet didn’t even consider the iPad, an indication that a large group of consumers are looking for alternatives, and an opportunity for the rest of the market to grow their business.”

If you overlay this argument on your South American analogy it would read something like:

Economic conditions in South America are improving, an indication that poverty has declined.

If you think about it, this does not make sense. Improvements in economic conditions may have no effect on poverty at all if the money is not trickling down.

NPD was probably targeting this report at some PC manufacturer that was looking to invest in the tablet sector. It is probably 'market research' reporting such as this that creates bubbles such as Groupon.

Rajiv_N··on The price of a messy codebase: No LaTeX on the iPad
Maybe we should let LaTex be the way it is now and focus instead on generating better HTML authoring tools. With eBooks becoming more popular, there is certainly a need for such tools. While I understand HTML is no match for the power of LaTex currently, we need to think ahead and maybe help to create a platform for the future rather than getting bogged down by technologies of the past.
