RONROC··on Steve Jobs, Movie Mogul/Pixar looking for second big hit in A Bug's Life (1998)
> forgotten by time

Wildly successful children’s movie seen by many millions of children.

I remember it being fairly cutting edge at the time, an accomplishment that helped bolster the nascent Pixar’s reputation as a global animation powerhouse.

Out of curiosity, what about its execution was shaky, and what would you do differently?

RONROC··on Facebook apologises as services including Instagram hit again
I guess the grand irony of all this is that data scientists — of which, the "good" ones (rational Spock-types, highly technical, sometimes to their own detriment) are, historically, not socially inclined — are the ones responsible for optimizing _social_ media platforms in the first place.

But yeah, something something Mercury.

RONROC··on Dude, where’s my stuff
How’d you land at 97? Probably best to use 99, 100, or some variation of “I’m fairly certain”, no?

I am only 96% kidding ;)

RONROC··on OpenAI Sold its Soul for $1B
I think one of the only second order effects of wokeism is the fact that many times it gets results.

“Call out culture” runs the gamut from obvious to pendantic, and, more often than not, the result is a net positive.

So, my question is: Why isn’t there a concerted effort from [OpenAI’s] like-minded contemporaries to call them out on their incredibly embarrassing name?

To all the OpenAI engineers, investors, and onlookers: there is _nothing_ “open” about your platform. Am I stupid or are your efforts just casually misleading?

RONROC··on Musk: Bezos retired in order to pursue a job filing lawsuits against SpaceX
I hate the big baby billionaire pissing match more than the next guy, but establishing clear-cut consensus protocols for looting the solar system is the least these companies can do.

I’m surprised these talks are happening between two American corporations and an American regulatory body. Shouldn’t this sort of thing be discussed in an international forum or conference and it’s findings codified via consensual, global treatise?

“Move fast and break things” works incredibly well when the thing you’re breaking are nascent web apps. The final frontier is _not_ one of those things.

RONROC··on End of the line for Uber?
Sorry dang! Could of definitely left that last sentence out.
RONROC··on NoSurf – A community of people against digital addiction
I’m sure the irony is not lost on them. There’s a highly rated post regarding that very thing on the sub right now (https://old.reddit.com/r/nosurf/comments/ovdngk/dont_be_fool...).

Where do you propose they gather? Freenode? Matrix? Some other obscure digital hangout?

I think it’s prudent to encourage people trying to fix their situation no matter how messy the implementation.

This is pure conjecture, but i’d wager that the majority of the posters on there are relatively young kids/adults who are wising up to the fact that social media is no longer _helping_ them. They may not be able to tell you how and why these “tools” are hurting them, but that’s ostensibly what they’re trying to figure out. If we can, as a society, figure out how/if they’re on to something, maybe we can help correct the course for them.

If the next brilliant engineer skips on the shiny Data Science job or the FAANG post where he/she will build yet another “cool” thing, and decided instead to fix an existing thing, maybe the world would actually be the place that nobs like Paul Graham think it is.

RONROC··on Pfizer says 2021 Covid-19 vaccine sales to top $33.5 bln, sees need for boosters
It’s incredible that we even have to state that. This leaves a bad taste in my mouth, full stop.

I got the vaccine, and am shocked that I may need to comply with another dose or “booster” shots.

I’m trying my hardest to be a team player but I’m incredibly concerned that one side would be OK with “Life-Saving-Vacinne-as-a-Service” for the low cost of x$ per month, for an unknown amount of time, and the other side is cool with ignoring it completely.

Who will ultimately be right is anyone’s guess, but with all the stories about bullshit “variants”and vaccinated people still getting fucked, I have a depleted confidence “in the science”. The same “science” that got us in here in the first place via “Gain of Function” research.

RONROC··on Is Eric Weinstein a Crackpot?
He’s a smart, gifted orator, who fancies himself a misunderstood academic. Yet, this self-proclaimed outsider status is still just a chip on his shoulder. He has the resources and reach to bankroll his own research and get even with his old physics department, He _could_ put his money where his mouth is. But doesn’t. Why?

The answer is because he’s ten times the businessman than public intellectual. Playing Mr. Schizo on normie podcasts with the rest of the Dark Web Gang, is better business than actually trying to solve anything you’re bitching about. There is nothing outsider or punk rock about running in the same circles as Peter Thiel, no matter how much DMT you smoke.

The amount of acronyms for arcane theories and processes he “coined” himself reminds me of when Michael Scott declares bankruptcy out of a window. And his “audio essays” where he practically interviews himself reminds me of those gibberish podcasts designed to help listeners go to bed.

Weinstein is neither complicated or important. He’s been dancing on the knifes edge of quack pottery / People Who Should Be Taken Seriously™ for a while now. At some point in the future, another Epstein-tier banana peel will settle this once and for all.

RONROC··on Bitcoin as a Hyperobject
The mental gymnastics needed to market Bitcoin are becoming more and more absurd.

Not sure how to convince maximalists that non-believers _actually_ do understand Bitcoin—they just don’t see any practical uses for it other than funny money.

Also, it’s kind of ironic that any anti-btc sentiment is seen as snarky, yet these awkward psychobabble think pieces are fair game. Oh well.

RONROC··on Up to 1,500 businesses affected by ransomware attack, Kaseya CEO says
100% with you. Generally posts like these induce the HN crowd blinders, since people who typically post here are sympathetic to software developers. The same software developers who are making money hand over fist. The same software developers who refuse to pay reasonable amounts of money for zero days.

These hackers are fulfilling a market inefficiency whether users here would like to acknowledge that or not.

It’s not the mean hackers or bitcoins fault. The blame should be squarely be placed at the doorstep of all the brilliant engineers who are responsible for the creation of the system architecture but for whatever reason are nowhere to be found when it’s starts to degrade.

This is a major issue with software development that is simply not convenient to discuss because the incentives to frog hop from job to job massively outweigh the benefits of staying on board for the years the job actually requires.

And yes, people will tell you, especially on here, that air tight code is a pipe dream. And maybe so, but the amount of severe deficiencies in code bases that millions of people rely on every day are simply unacceptable. When your earnings report is in the upwards of hundreds of millions, it’s really hard to play stupid.

Housing market crash is not inevitable. The market crashed in 08 because banks gave loans to unqualified people who could not afford their mortgage(s) otherwise.

The current housing “bubble” is driven by-and-large by private equity groups who see the real estate market (more so the single family home) as the safest place to park their money.

Thing is, these people can afford them.

RONROC··on Our digital pasts weren’t supposed to be weaponized like this
Probably an unpopular take but cancelling typically occurs in domains that either deserve the maximum amount of public scrutiny such as politics and show business (the reasoning here is that the people who operate in these domains have, always will, and should be held to account for the simple reason that they wouldn’t be in these positions without the inverse, ie. positive public perception—-if you’re not useful, you’re replaceable) or in industries that have a inherently corrosive framework whose success is predicated on extracting a disproportionate amount of value from the those who are doing the cancelling such as big tech and media (no normal person will weep for these people and with good reason).

The only exception here is the cancelling of people with relatively small followings/influence who receive heavy-handed negative attention (like the Reddit bomber or people in academia like the N-word professor) but instances like these are fewer and far between and will probably decline over time as boomers leave the discourse (die).

I used to work at a few big media companies in a position that required a decent amount of public facing and had brushes with this sort of behavior in the past (people tweeting death threats at me, which I just brushed off because I understood what I signed up for and am not naive). These days I work for myself in a “blue collar” industry and mostly ignore social media, so I can’t really be cancelled.

I guess the point i’m trying to make is, if this is something you’re actually worried about, just

1; go work in an industry that lacks the highly educated, overstimulated, and mostly out of touch people that dominate 99% of the discourse but speak for 1% of the population

2; learn how to read the room (ie. listen more and talk less)

Big tech wanted everyone to have a voice and now they do. :)

I've seen comments about the supposed "information firewall" a couple of times in various threads related to the GME WSB fiasco across a few different websites.

I am not a financial professional, but I am not stupid.

Anyone who believes that 1. this firewall exists, 2. is up to snuff (ie. working like it should), and 3. is not being constantly undermined formally or informally is sorely mistaken.

This high minded woo woo bullshit is intended to be accepted as a “good faith” devil’s advocate argument, except it fails to address the following:

Watching these “patriots” trying to interrupt and attack the democratic process with such blatant, selfish contempt on live television was a breaking point/ wake up call for the majority of morally decent Americans.

The cultural zeitgeist has decided that a line has been crossed and therefore: a stand must be made, and action must be taken.

Because of the way time works, we simply cannot afford the luxury (privilege) of trying to “rehabilitate” these people _at the current moment_.

You don’t get any points for giving these people the benefit of the doubt and/or confusing what’s occurring right now as a “teachable moment”.

The fact that these people can guilt trip you into believing that they should be treated with empathy is 100% irrefutable proof that you, personally, have been conned.

I understand that these actions are obviously not 100% perfect and sustainable, but until we’ve reached a modicum of sensible tech regulation standards, I would take imperfect action over no action at all.

RONROC··on Unslack: Transform the way your business communicates (again)

It seems like Slack is massively overvalued.

At my current organization which has a small team of around ~10 people, we simply could no longer justify the astronomical per-seat price tag, the needlessly convoluted admin UI, among a host of other trivial/annoying things like the syntax restriction on channel naming, and the constant whack-a-mole of maintaining user permissions/roles so that someone wouldn’t install some cheeky chat bot that asks everyone what they want for lunch.

Im not naive enough to think that Slack isn’t aimed squarely at enterprise whale clients, but with the emergence of other workplace chat platforms like the ones built into GSuite and O365, and the ease of which you can spin up something open source like Rocket Chat or Discourse (IIRC Discourse has a self-hosted option), I really have a hard time understanding why this tech is so appealing.

Pepper in Slack’s un-impressive growth during COVID-19, it seems pretty clear that the other shoe might drop—and even a death knell acquisition from Salesforce might start looking appealing.

Someone smarter than me: what am I missing?

RONROC··on Apple Silicon M1: A Developer's Perspective
I can understand this level of pearl-clutching when we’re talking about social media, but I just don’t see Apple as the five-alarm fire it’s made out to be.

Practically speaking being “locked” into a system would only be a possibility in a world where highly distributed, massively supported OS’s (Windows, Linux) didn’t exist.

Anti-apple people have a hard time fathoming the degree to which many other “power users” are okay with privacy/security trade offs if it results in a more robust/stable environment that just works.

Problem is, it’s being framed as some sort of Faustian bargain when it’s really not that big of a deal.

RONROC··on Show HN: Turn your website console into a chat that connects website visitors
Because (per the creator) a more stable release will follow.

If people are interested (the people who are upvoting), they can provide suggestions/feedback and possibly get involved with the project in some capacity.

Im candidly wondering how hard it is to understand this foreign concept.

For an amateur like me, who’s more concerned with getting his code to actually work, something like this is actually less daunting than stack overflow.

The problem with stack overflow (again, for someone like me) is that issues posted on there get abstracted to oblivion, resulting in posters proffering a million different, mostly correct, mostly complicated, solutions. Also, I believe OP’s product has a way narrower scope than stack overflow.

SO is not going anywhere anytime soon. I just don’t see why it has to be the end all resource.

Assuming OP can find a good way to deal with duplicate entries, it seems like a more “to the point” version of SO that can be referenced before having to deep dive SO’s massive sea of information.

Just a layman’s two cents.
