PythonDeveloper··on Why I got Fired from Facebook (a $100 Million dollar lesson)
I worked for a VERY large Internet company in the late '90s, and I can say with complete conviction that the VAST majority of terminations were politically motivated.

Several times I was provided a list of my team members that needed to go, and when I asked "why this guy?" or "why her?", the answer was never performance related. A few times I was able to argue the team member to safety, but most of the time it was already a forgone conclusion.

Each faction would come into and out of favor with upper management as the rounds of layoffs came and went, and the business priorities changed. Enemies of that faction were always targeted, irrespective of the cost to the business of the loss of that talent.

The way I avoided all this WITHOUT choosing a side was to quietly make myself invaluable to the upper management as the key "goto guy" for skunkwerk projects, to always accept technical due-diligence projects on upcoming acquisitions, and keep showing "projects I'm working on in my spare time" to the uppers.

PythonDeveloper··on Data Breach Reveals 100k IEEE.org Members' Plaintext Passwords
How is that this esteemed organization of technical people doesn't know how to md5 passwords before storing them in the database?
PythonDeveloper··on Gittip: New, Interesting, Important
LOL... Gittip.org is down, the URL you have in your post should be "gittip.com".
PythonDeveloper··on If you had an app that told you the truth, would you use it?
Exactly. The "truth" is relative.
PythonDeveloper··on Ask HN: App developers - work on projects offering equity without pay?
In my experience, this is rarely worthwhile as 99% of startups don't even get funded, and without an anti-dilution guarantee (which requires an irrevocable modification to the by-laws of the company, and is STILL not a guarantee), you're unlikely to see anything from the venture.

What I would suggest is convertible equity. Take the stock, but get in writing that if the stock isn't worth X by date Y, you have the right (but not the duty) to convert it to debt, payable upon presentation, with a 1.5% per month interest rate if not paid immediately.

You're still unlikely to see a dime, but at least you can sell the debt to a collection company if things get bad.

PythonDeveloper··on Twitter Suspends iOS6maps
I wonder when people will stop using services that arbitrarily censor users and kill accounts without any recourse or due process.
PythonDeveloper··on Chinese Phone Giant Chooses a Web-Based Mobile OS
How ironic is it that a major phone company in a country that won't let its people browse the REAL web, or interact with people outside its borders without spying on and filtering them, chooses a WEB BASED OS for its phones.
PythonDeveloper··on Ask HN: does an Expanding Desktop exist?

PythonDeveloper··on How can anyone approve an ad like this? (scroll down a little)
Gotta love Chrome's Adblock plugin!!! :) I didn't see a thing.
PythonDeveloper··on Ask HN: Does knowing Python give you a significant head start learning Django?
Django is definitely cool, and yes, knowing Python will help you in as much as knowing HTML will help you learn web page design.

You might also check out less-overhead Python frameworks, such as Flask (http://flask.pocoo.org/) or WebPy (http://webpy.org/).

PythonDeveloper··on Nissan offering 2x $50,000 to fund innovative ideas
They own "a" right, not "the rights". At any rate, it means that they can implement any submitted idea without compensation or award to any person.

The idiocy with this agreement is that it says "fully paid", and without any renumeration actually getting paid to you, that test fails. Irrespective of that idiocy, even if "fully paid" is struck, it's irrevocable, so you could find yourself losing AND in a lawsuit with Nissan over the priority of rights, yours versus theirs.

PythonDeveloper··on [dead]
You can't guarantee a reply unless you FORCE him to read it and lock his inbox until he replies. Who would be stupid enough to run THAT software?

LinkedIn has a feature called InMail, that allows you to connect directly with people like Paul Graham, but does not guarantee a response. I've had some success with it, but it does heavily rely on your own ability to craft a cogent message.

PythonDeveloper··on University of California Sues Facebook And Others Over Patents
Wow. I never expected something like THIS to happen. This has potential implications to PostgreSQL and any other technologies that the Regents have licensed under open source.

Users of PostgreSQL (I am one) should ensure that rights under its license have not been impacted by Eolas or any other entity that may have acquired or be acting as a Trustee for the patent(s) in place.

PythonDeveloper··on This Fall, A Billion PC Users Will Wake Up To A New Desktop: Windows 8
Clearly, you are unaware that Python runs on every operating system.

I've been developing on Windows since 1.0. Windows 8 is a huge steaming pile of camel dung, in my humble opinion.

PythonDeveloper··on This Fall, A Billion PC Users Will Wake Up To A New Desktop: Windows 8
Not me. I tried the trial just a week ago and it is an abysmal user experience, especially for developers.

Windows 8 will be the next Windows Vista 32-bit for Microsoft.

PythonDeveloper··on Why is the Venezuelan gov installing a Twitter proxy just before the elections?
Gee.. I wonder why? Hugo Chavez will steal the election through fraud and thuggery again, and all the tweets his people see will be cheerful and happy. All the tweets we see will be pro Hugo.

The White House will say nothing about this, as usual.

PythonDeveloper··on Is it possible to travel in Stockholm on a budget?
One can travel to the moon on a budget, provided that the budget includes $10Bn in equipment. How much is your budget?
PythonDeveloper··on As a software developer, how can I ensure I remain employable after age 35?
Be nimble and open minded, learn new languages, watch and discover new technologies, mentor people (don't be a land baron), and most important of all, DBAD (Don't Be A Dick).

The guy you mentor may become your boss, and so might the guy you are a dick to.

In the tech sense, DBAD typically means be nice, and don't be a technology nazi. There is no "perfect" technology for a solution. If the team wants PHP, and PHP works as a solution, DBAD, make it work for the team and don't force Ruby or Java down their throats.

PythonDeveloper··on Introducing a bold nuclear energy initiative to win an election?
I'm pro-thorium. What got me was this guy was clearly only interested in having Obama work on this, as a means to get re-elected. If he was truly an advocate of the technology, he would have sent it to both parties.

Thorium234 is much safer than uranium or other fissile material, and unlike those, it can be used to make neighborhood reactors, allowing energy independence on a local scale.

PythonDeveloper··on Introducing a bold nuclear energy initiative to win an election?
Wow. You guys must REALLY be desperate.
PythonDeveloper··on So It Has Come To This - ads mid-video on YouTube
I'm calling it.... This is the beginning of the end for YouTube (LOL)... Probably not, but it is proof that they are willing to do what many people consider "evil" to please their stockholders.
PythonDeveloper··on Show HN: 3months working on this Android app with a friend. Would Love feedback.
Feedback..

a) Nice clean UI.

b) Move send/cancel to top or side, away from the word-suggestion-list. I kept cancelling when choosing words from the word list as I typed.

c) Any way to allow me to choose the radius? 21km seems arbitrary. I might want just people on my block to see it, or people in Dallas/Fort Worth (50km away). Obviously there should be an upper limit, but that could also be opened for a price, say for political campaigns.

You wouldn't want to share a location with every message, but rather give users the "choice" to share location for any given message they post.

If they've just seen an accident, they'll want to post a URL. If they're at home, not likely.

You might even ask users to "mark" private locations from which location can't be sent, like school, home, or work.

You could also allow the user to vary the accuracy of the position by zooming in/out, to give them control of proximity for their posted locations.

PythonDeveloper··on Show HN: 3months working on this Android app with a friend. Would Love feedback.
Think about ease of use here. It should allow people to "subscribe" to channels or categories rather than have to click, click, click to change channel/category. What they get is a "stream" of echos that are mixed together that they can filter out.

If it's more CraigsList in nature, I don't think it will have the staying power.

PythonDeveloper··on Show HN: 3months working on this Android app with a friend. Would Love feedback.
That's a mistake, IMHO. You're pushing a LOT more data over the air by sharing an image versus a URL to a google map. Additionally, Google has partner adverts on those maps that they get revenue from, and if you get enough traffic viewing the maps, you can go to them and get a revshare.

When people start using it to broadcast events like accidents, fires, etc., you're going to want to use URLs, not pics.

PythonDeveloper··on Show HN: 3months working on this Android app with a friend. Would Love feedback.
Well, if I got the app, and some idiot started posting racist rhetoric or links to pics of their penis, i'd rather get fewer than an unlimited amount.

Additionally, people should be able to block posters, and the weight of those blocks can ban a user if there are enough and the velocity is high.

In that vein, it would seem that an IRC approach with "channels" might be better, so that you can have a private "channel" with your friends nearby, or move into the "starbucks" channel to get deals and updates from your local Starbucks.

Perhaps allow people to create "private" channels, by invite only, if they buy the paid version of the app..
