Pxtl··on Google Has Removed MV2 Extensions from the Chrome Web Store, Including UBO
Newspapers and magazines didn't sell ad space to obvious crooks back in the day. Scammers didn't have tv ads. Obviously there was somebody watching them. The trashy scams were reserved for the real scummy publishers: comic books.
Pxtl··on Google: Lake Ontario/Lake America name change in the U.S. will appear in Maps
I mean is it the API or is it the website provider's metadata? I don't know anything about the gmaps API. I would assume the default locale would be that of the requester, not US (but then I know MS has the "Invariant locale" which is often best-practice, which is de-facto US... not sure if Google has similar).
Pxtl··on Google: Lake Ontario/Lake America name change in the U.S. will appear in Maps
I'm wondering, I haven't used the gmaps API. Is this because they're proxying maps requests through the US, or is there a specific header request to request the US version of the map, or is it just that they've a US-based GApps account?

Many of these are telcos that use "Buy Canadian" patriotism to get governments to protect them from international competitors. It should be scandalous if they're getting all their web front-end services from US companies. I know Google is the big name in maps, so that may be unavoidable and hard to shift, but if it's also the middle web-hosting providers... that's a lot less excusable for companies that love to wrap themselves in the Maple Leaf.

Pxtl··on Google: Lake Ontario/Lake America name change in the U.S. will appear in Maps
One kicker is how many sites leveraging Google Maps API in Canada are showing "Lake of America". I'm not sure if that's because they're proxying the Google Maps requests through a US server, or they're using an API call to specifically request the US version of the map. But either way, it's a pretty bad faux pas, especially for oligarchic telcos that wrap themselves in the flag when they're begging for protection from international competitors.
Pxtl··on Trump signs order to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America'
IANAA and IANAL, but AFAIK the procedural vote requirement for 25the amendment isn't any lower than it is for impeachment.
Pxtl··on Trump signs order to rename Lake Ontario as 'Lake America'
A little under half of American voters picked him three times... a huge chunk of those ultimately regretted it after the Iran war created inflation (not about the dead Iranians though).

Many of the same people also voted for GWBush twice and regretted that too, for similar reasons.

Those people probably still have their own driver's license and power of attorney.

Pxtl··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Apparently according to downthread that's a "Reddit opinion" to notice what their re-elected political leaders and all their pundits keep saying.

The trick is that the stuff about steel and car parts is in Ontario, which is a province that does not kick up a fuss and pressure the federal government to protect its industries.

What unity? They didn't take American liquor off the shelves during the last round of this mayhem unlike every other province, we have no reason to expect solidarity this time.

Oil and potash are made in provinces that have had their voter bases successfully propagandized by US Republican interests. They refused to get on-side at a political level.

It won't. This isn't the first time Canada has had to stand alone against Trump while the rest of the world goes along to get along.

On a macro level you're correct. On a micro level, I miss the pre-pandemic, pre-AI era before stuff got expensive, before Russia invaded Ukraine, before the Israel/Palestine strife went into overdrive, and before the US declared war on Iran, Canada, Greenland, and Minnesota.
Pxtl··on Ask HN: Alternatives to GitHub
That's the chief differentiator you're giving up when you give up on github vs a self-hosted forge. And the network effect of the CI pipelines should not be discounted since it means actions published anywhere on GH are automatically available for use without any import or install step.

Yes, you could feasibly split off the CI from the git+PR service, but you'd still want it to be federated.

Pxtl··on Ask HN: Alternatives to GitHub
That would be good for following, but I'd worry about contributions. Single-sign-on would help but if you're going to ask the user to create a new username+password to log a bug you're not going to get bugs from anybody except your most hardcore users.

Also, unified dashboards/notifications are so useful (even though Github's notification UI is a bit mediocre, imho).

Pxtl··on Ask HN: Alternatives to GitHub
A big thing with Github its the unified functionality across most of the OSS world - that we can search across all projects, leverage pipeline actions from other projects, and easily have a single dashboard for our own contributions and interests across all projects.

I'd hate to see a move to forge balkanization lose this functionality. But this would not be heavyweight data to federate. So are there any forges with a good story for federation?

Pxtl··on License plate reader searches should require a warrant
There's a fundamental question: Is it legal for the government to blanket a public space in cameras and do whatever they want to the data that they collect from those cameras?

Is it legal for a private entity to do the same with their owned space (like a plaza or mall or office tower)?

Focusing on license-plate-readers seems like car-brain is causing the author to miss the forest for the trees.
