PufPufPuf··on Windows 11 after two decades of macOS: okay, but also awful
MOS is free, but Mac Mouse Fix lets you perform some touch gestures with a mouse (e.g. switching virtual desktops). But yeah, look at how the official Apple mouse looks, they have terrible support for "normal" ones.

Having the default "midnight" be something like 3AM would get you 90% there without any UI changes

I can't tell whether something is satire anymore.
PufPufPuf··on Windows 11 after two decades of macOS: okay, but also awful
I converted (not by choice) to Mac. Applications that I need to "fix" macOS: - MOS (free) / Mac Mouse Fix ($3, has some neat extra features) -- without these, mouse scrollwheel is practically unusable - Karabiner Elements (free) -- to fix modifier keys layout to be consistent with Linux / Windows - Ukelele (free) -- modify keyboard layout to match Linux / Windows

First is needed only if you use a mouse with a wheel. Last two are just for my unwillingness to learn the Mac layout, since I still use other systems regularly.

I also used to have an app that would close an app after I closed the last window (curiously most apps on Mac keep running after that and you need to close them from right click menu), but I got used to it.

Window snapping was fixed in macOS 15, special apps are only necessary if you have a 32:9 monitor, otherwise the built-in support is solid.

I also have that surname in my ancestry! Here's a Czech source claiming that the name might more likely be related to a shortened first name, or an old word for a stuffed stomach, used to describe a fat person: https://dvojka.rozhlas.cz/budik-8215419
PufPufPuf··on Show HN: Context Gateway – Compress agent context before it hits the LLM
That comment reads pretty normal to me, and it raises valid points
PufPufPuf··on Agent Safehouse – macOS-native sandboxing for local agents
What would native containers bring over Linux ones? The performance of VZ emulation is good, existing tools have great UX, and using a virtualized kernel is a bit safer anyways. I regularly use a Lima VM as a VSCode remote workspace to run yolo agents in.
PufPufPuf··on Training students to prove they're not robots is pushing them to use more AI
Eliminating any statistically significant difference between a high-quality human-written text and LLM-written text is exactly what the LLMs are being trained for. At this point, "text is low quality, therefore must be human" is a much stronger signal.
PufPufPuf··on Plasma Bigscreen – 10-foot interface for KDE plasma
I have this one, acts like a mouse (gyroscope) and keyboard (arrows, back, home, vol+- on the front side, almost-full qwerty on the back).

PufPufPuf··on Firefox 148 Launches with AI Kill Switch Feature and More Enhancements
That's not a real thing, just a side effect: AI "quick answers" don't appear when you use search operators. In this case, you are using the minus operator to filter results with the word "AI", which might not be desirable.
PufPufPuf··on Show HN: enveil – hide your .env secrets from prAIng eyes
Good point. You would need to inject the secrets in an inaccessible part of the pipeline, like an external proxy.
PufPufPuf··on Show HN: enveil – hide your .env secrets from prAIng eyes
It prompts for password every time. Which is also the main problem here imo, it would get old quickly.
PufPufPuf··on Show HN: Amla Sandbox – WASM bash shell sandbox for AI agents
In theory it's more secure. Containers and VMs run on real hardware, containers usually even on the real kernel (unless you use something like Kata). WASM doesn't have any system interface by default, you have full control over what it accesses. So it's similar to JVM for example.
PufPufPuf··on Clawdbot Renames to Moltbot
$40 used ThinkCentre Tiny is also plug and play! Or Dell Optiplex Micro, practically the same thing.
PufPufPuf··on Libbbf: Bound Book Format, A high-performance container for comics and manga
From the readme: > Note: DirectStorage isn't avaliable for images yet (as far as I know), but I've made sure to accomodate such a thing in the future with this format.

So the whole DirectStorage thing is just a nothingburger. The author glosses over the fact that decoding images on GPU is not possible (or at least very impractical).

"Native Data Deduplication" not supported in CBZ/CBR? But those are just ZIP/RAR, which are compression formats, deduplication is their whole deal...?
PufPufPuf··on Linux boxes via SSH: suspended when disconected
Given the price when stopped is comparable to price when running on cheaper VPS providers like Hetzner, I'd say that it isn't exactly good either
PufPufPuf··on I hate GitHub Actions with passion
Using jdx/mise in GitHub Actions has been very nice, I recommend it. It's not just a nice task runner, it also manages the dependencies of your tasks (stuff like Python, Node.js, even random tools from GitHub) so that "mise run build" does the exact same thing both locally and in CI. Then the ideal GHA workflow is just "install mise, run this mise task". And not only for building, we have it set up for commit checks too.
PufPufPuf··on It's hard to justify Tahoe icons
The business goal is clear: visionOS. Liquid Glass is designed with AR in mind, that's the only place where it actually makes some sense. Pretty much the same thing as Microsoft did with Windows 8, trying to unify the UX and visual style across PCs and phones. And it's going similarly well.
PufPufPuf··on Parental controls aren't for parents
What if we teach children how to navigate the real world, instead of the digital equivalent of "baby proofing the house"? You don't lock away the kitchen knives from a 12 year old, you teach them how to use them safely.

Oh but nowadays you have to access the old Control Panel only to access advanced options, like... setting the actions for lid close and power button, apparently.

PufPufPuf··on Ruby already solved my problem
Ruby developers truly are a special breed. I once spent a few months in a Ruby company, so I'm speaking from experience. Debugging anything in Rails creates strong feelings, but I wouldn't describe them as "joy".
PufPufPuf··on Ruby already solved my problem
Today we're praising Ruby for... having a version parsing utility in the standard library? Really? Many languages like Python, C#, even PHP have it too.
