Psilidae··on Don’t do the long take home assignments like coinbase
I don't get it? That doesn't sound too bad. A brief interview with candidates, a short take home project, and then a final interview seems quite reasonable. There are tons of people applying for jobs, and companies want to make sure candidates care and are actually capable of programming; how else are they supposed to gauge someone's abilities? Just ask how merge sort works, then hand that Rock Star Software Engineer their 100k job?

I like this statement from the replies there: "People here really think a $90k job is owed to them for getting a piece of paper and meeting a few times and answering a few questions right."

I don't know how people are getting hung up on 4-6 hours for a task. I won't even rate any of my software tasks less than 2-4 hours in scrum, because I know that with planning and/or testing no non-trivial task takes just an hour.

Psilidae··on Bitcoin's decentralised nature is not a feature, its a bug
I was intrigued when I started reading this article, but then it just ended without really delivering anything. I think this could be summarized as: "I once heard about how having a centralized currency helped prevent bad things. Bitcoin is decentralized."

I was actually interested to hear a perspective of how a hypothetical centralized cryptocurrency might be superior, but the author just kind of offered an allusion and nothing else.

Psilidae··on Kodak shares up as it announces KODAKCoin cryptocurrency
This is what my criticism is, as well. A few days ago I had been pondering a similar concept of a blockchain-based platform for tracking image ownership. The main blocker I encountered while thinking about it was the problem of immutability. Specifically, what happens if something is wrong?

Like, the first problem I see here is a troll just importing images from all over the Internet and claiming ownership. If something like this happens, would it be possible for the actual artist to ever regain "ownership"?

You really think someone would do that? Just go on the blockchain and tell lies?

Psilidae··on I Made My Shed the Top Rated Restaurant on TripAdvisor
You can see in the screenshot of it being the number one restaurant that it only has 83 reviews (likely the originals from friends that likely got him into the top 10,000), yet it's still #1. I'm speculating, but TripAdvisor likely ranks not just by reviews, but probably page views and other interactions that one could consider to be viewers having a positive judgment of the restaurant. In fact, you can see from the other screenshot, the page has the same 83 reviews when it was ranked #156, so it got to #1 without receiving any new reviews.
Psilidae··on DAO Is yet Another OOP Shame
I think I disagree with most of the arguments for this, and I think the author's example of his own "something like DAO" is worse organization. I haven't used "DAO" but from what I understood reading this, it's my preferred pattern of doing database access in which objects are just data, and any database interaction would either return a data object, or take one as a parameter.

From my personal experience, I've found that trying to write database interaction methods on an object seemed to result in (subjectively) messier and harder to maintain code, compared to using functions that take or return objects. To achieve Encapsulation, I'd merge this into functions `static void update(Book b)` or `static Book get()` within the `Book` class.

Though, this preference comes from having been corrupted by functional principles and a strong preference for immutable data objects.

Psilidae··on Ask HN: Is there a fitness wristband that is hackable?
I'm not sure if this is a question about Garmin or ANT+, but assuming a device is Bluetooth enabled, is there documentation for the Bluetooth API? I really want to find a nice smart fitness thing, but no one makes apps for my phone, so I figure I'd need to make one myself.
Psilidae··on Uber's use of encrypted messaging may set legal precedents
What do you mean by "they are"?

I, too, don't understand how this is a legal issue given that people can talk face-to-face, or over non-recorded voice services. If it's written communication, what if you're writing things on whiteboards?

How would this not set a legal precedent that essentially requires all communication be through Slack/etc?

Psilidae··on Backdoor with root access found from OnePlus phones
> The sad fact is that the mobile phone ecosystem in general is full of garbage. Neither Android nor iOS is exempt. But at least with Android I have freedom.

As a Windows Phone user, this is why I'm dreading the day I need to replace my phone and pick a side. It seems like there's no winning in the mobile world.

Psilidae··on Firefox Features Google as Default Search Provider in the U.S.
I agree. It's incredibly difficult to find anything that isn't a basic, low-value result when you're looking for advanced, detailed content.

Maybe I'm looking up practices on how to write efficient SQL queries. All of the results I find are just slideshare presentations and basic blog posts on how to add an index to your select statement.

It feels impossible to find depth nowadays, when everything that search engines deem relevant are the big, heavy-SEO websites with the lowest tier of query-relevant information. Sure, the results may be good for people who want just-the-basics about what they're searching, but anything more than that feels hidden away.

Psilidae··on Postcardware – free to use if you send us a postcard
My favorite fitness app, Caledos Runner, is Postcardware! Unfortunately, even though it's a fitness app, I've been too lazy to send the postcard. Maybe I'll do that sometime soon.

Psilidae··on Nobody Thinks About EBay
"The company’s research has found that a younger audience wants unique products and “is searching for items that push against conformity.”"

I wonder how much time and money was spent for Ebay to realize the obvious: that young people like (and have always liked) being different.

Psilidae··on Uber says it's leaving Quebec if province insists on stricter rules
Wouldn't Uber still be safer overall for passengers when it comes to intentional crimes (not accidents)? In Uber, a driver may commit a crime, but the nature of requesting a ride means there's now a direct link between a victim and the identity of a driver. A driver could only commit a crime one time before his identity became known, so there's no way to have a serial offender.

Compared to hailing a taxi, police can't necessarily trace a victim back to a specific driver, so that person could theoretically commit repeated crimes.

This personally gives me a lot more confidence when it comes to putting trust in a driver.

Also, from a cursory glance over that link, a few of those appear to be misleading headlines in which the actual story is "a person, who happens to be an Uber driver, committed a crime".

Psilidae··on Show HN: NBox – Sign up anywhere without giving your email address
I've been considering just buying a few prepaid SIM cards just for services like this. I'd love some throwaway phone number/ SMS-forwarding services, but most get blacklisted within a few months because spammers immediately jump all over them.
Psilidae··on Show HN: NBox – Sign up anywhere without giving your email address
Its certainly more traceable from the perspective of metadata aggregation. If you were looking at the users from multiple sites, you could easily consider "*@bumblebutt.example" to be one person thus linking all accounts together.

The benefit of a public site is that you can't use the hostname as an identifer for a single person.

Psilidae··on Clicking on a Facebook Scam to See What Would Happen
Aside from malware, this might just be trying to get a lot of likes on a facebook page. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but there's definitely a demand for pages with a large quantity of likes. I have a page that has 100,000+ likes and I get multiple messages every day inquiring to "buy" (read: steal) the page. So, a scam like this might just be trying to fill a page with likes for whatever market exists for well-liked pages.
Psilidae··on The Sororicide Antipattern
I'm sure this is a thing someone has decided was a good idea at one point. It can easily be done in other languages, too.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone, for example, decided to hijack PHP's `__call()` function to forward method calls to a component.

Rust has the similar Deref anti-pattern: https://github.com/rust-unofficial/patterns/blob/master/anti...

Psilidae··on How to build your own VPN if you're wary of commercial options
I'm really happy with Algo!

One minor issue I experienced: I have not had a good experience using Digital Ocean for VPNs. I tried manually setting up OpenVPN on it a while ago and got really bad upload speed (admittedly, I could have misconfigured it). With Algo, the speed seemed okay, but I would frequently "disconnect" every hour or two. According to Windows, I was still connected to the VPN, but my traffic wasn't getting out; I'd have to manually reconnect to get Internet access again.

I set up Algo on Azure a month ago and have had no problems at all. I'd highly recommend Algo if you're looking for ISP/untrusted network protection and pseudo-anonymization (3rd parties just seeing a cloud IP rather than your home IP).

Psilidae··on CEOs Want Their Offices Back
For what it's worth, it did seem to be true at my last company. Engineers were outgoing and the artists were all the introverted quiet ones.

Edit: Then again, I was pulling a lot of engineering weight and was the one with headphones on all day...

Psilidae··on How Anker is beating Apple and Samsung at their own accessory game
I'm surprised how much love there is for Anker. The only product I have from them is a vertical mouse, which I'll admit looks nice and has a solid feel, but within a week the scroll wheel became nearly useless due to some hardware/software issue. The only reason I still have it is because I was too lazy to go to a USP store to mail the Amazon return.
Psilidae··on Thunderbird’s Future Home
Regarding NPM compatibility: I'd be worried about potential security issues with something like npm. I recognize that one must already put a lot of trust on developers when using extensions, but I'd worry NPM would make it a lot easier for a nefarious developer to add malicious code to a really deeply buried dependency.
Psilidae··on Electron is flash for the desktop (2016)
I think this thinking is exactly how it gets past testing. You could force every engineer to have a CPU meter, but that alone won't help; they'll ignore it, assume it was a coworker's change that made the usage higher, or just assume their CPU is high because of their 30 Chrome tabs currently open while developing.

A better solution would be to have CI monitor CPU usage so that increases/decreases could be monitored and reported over time/per commit.

Psilidae··on Scaling your API with rate limiters
Before I read this article (having just seen the title) I assumed this was going to be covering a reverse proxy system, and started pondering how I would implement something like this myself. A very basic approach probably would be simpler than middleware, but the question I got stuck on was whether or not a reverse proxy would need to be "smart" about the content it was limiting. That is, would it need to be programmed to parse requests and understand what the intention and purpose was of each request?

For example, limiting traffic by IP address via reverse proxy is simple, but it seems like it would be more difficult to limit by request priority.

I was surprised when the article revealed it was middleware, and suddenly that made a lot more sense and seemed easier because it no-longer requires duplicating application logic to understand the content of requests. Middleware definitely seems like the better approach to me after these considerations.

What kinds of methods would one use to solve the problem of needing to parse and understand incoming requests using the reverse proxy method?

Psilidae··on Algorithms in Life: Find the perfect partner, apartment and job
The `1/e-law of best choice` mentioned on there was interesting, and helped me accept the conclusion regarding finding love. With the previous examples, love and similar concepts didn't seem like they would work well when N could theoretically be infinite. Though, after some help understanding the wiki explanation [1], applying the rule over the finite _period of time_ during which you see options, rather than the total number of options, makes much more sense and seems more agreeable.

Psilidae··on New male contraceptive may be submitted for Indian approval this year
Or, just normal people who don't want to have a kid before they're ready? I'm 24 and plan on getting this pretty much as soon as it's available in the US. What's so hard to believe about an average guy wanting this, who isn't part of the stereotypical "cool kid" clique?
Psilidae··on New male contraceptive may be submitted for Indian approval this year
It highlights that people bring up arguments like this to shame people out of having sex, but refuse to consider that something as simple as comprehensive sex education would contribute greatly to solving the aforementioned potential problem.
Psilidae··on Using Rust in Windows
For what it's worth, to anyone who may encounter problems with OpenSSL, I long ago tried my best to write up clear instructions for someone who was having trouble: https://github.com/Thinkofname/steven/pull/60#issuecomment-2...

It's a bit out of date, but I think it should help navigate the setup.

Psilidae··on Which automation tools/scripts do you use to save time and feel like a boss?
Got any tips you could share regarding the Jenkins setup? I'm going to be needing to rework our current Jenkins build system—which sounds pretty similar to your "all-encompassing build script"—as we're about to migrate from Perforce to SVN. I know what we've got setup is pretty bad, but I don't know much about best practices for build organization.

Psilidae··on Onedrive is slow on Linux but fast with a “Windows” user-agent (2016)
I hate that they rarely seem to even read the post. I once had a bad issue with one of my Windows PCs, so I dug through the internet and read all of the support docs I could find. Unfortunately none of them were working. In desperation, I turned to asking on the MS support site. I explained my issue, and explicitly stated "I have already tried XYZ, as per other support pages, and it is not working." Naturally, the first and only response was "Please try doing XYZ".
