Proleps··on Show HN: Friendex - a Pokédex of your friends.
It looks nice, but you're app could easily get kicked for copyright infringement.
Proleps··on How I have lost over 100 pounds and don’t know how
> no soda, even diet coke and whatnot.

Why?, there are a lot of diet sodas that do not contain any calories.

> Avoid too salty food (preprocessed food will be too salty.)

Why, salt doesn't contain any calories.

Going on a diet is very hard in the first place, giving up these two things doesn't seem to make much sense. It will only make a difficult lifestyle change even more difficult.

Proleps··on How I have lost over 100 pounds and don’t know how
> Yes, but the important question is why. Why do an increasing fraction of people have broken metabolic feedback systems, and what can they do to fix them?

I saw a documentary on tv a while back, it contained some research that showed that overeating can break your ability to feel full.

Proleps··on Learn Java in Minutes
All these Learn x in y minutes are really good cheat sheets. They are also pretty nice to check out before you start on a longer tutorial.
Proleps··on The Best Hope for France’s Young? Get Out
> Yes, my fundamental question about this article - where are they going to go?

Germany, The Netherlands, Norway or Sweden. Lots of countries left where there is still work.

Proleps··on Do we really need javascript frameworks?
> On the other hand, jQuery is not just a lot of code, it's tested code

I haven't really looked at it from that point of view, I guess that is a pretty a pretty big advantage. The basics of writing a widget are pretty simple most of the time, but testing it on different browsers and edge cases always takes more time than I think it will.

Proleps··on Texting-Enabled Raspberry-Pi-Powered Espresso Machine
Nice, but what happens if two people text the machine at the same time :P
Proleps··on "I have nothing to hide" is the wrong way to think about surveillance
Even if you have nothing to hide people you depend on might have something to hide. If a politician cheats on his wife, and only a small branch of the government knows this, they could use this to bribe him.
Proleps··on Confirmed: The NSA is Spying on Millions of Americans
Weird thing is, nobody seems to care. I care, it's one of the reasons I will keep voting for the pirate party.
Proleps··on Facebook agrees to block sexual assault 'humor'
I don't understand why Facebook needs to block content. If I don't like what people are posting I can just unfriend them.
Proleps··on Java's recent popularity?
Java is fast, and easier to program in than c/c++. That's the reason I still use it for a lot of projects. You can keep your source code clean by not using to many enterprise libraries and frameworks.

I might replace it with go later, but I haven't had the time to really look into it.

Proleps··on Predicting Google Product Shutdowns
> That's silly.

It is. The rebranding and new interface are a huge improvement and a sign Microsoft is taking there email service more seriously. I don't really get how someone could interpret it as the loss of a service.

Proleps··on Ask HN: When you turn down employment, is that considered burning a bridge?
In the Netherlands it is pretty common to do multiple interviews and only agree to taking a job after hearing back from all the companies. This way you may have to turn down multiple offers. I don't know if this is normal in the US.
Proleps··on How eBay Worked With The FBI To Put Its Top Affiliate Marketers In Prison
> Tricking people for profit is the definition of fraud.

This would make 90% of all applications/websites fraud. Most free(gratis) Windows software tricks you into installing spyware & toolbars. Almost every app on your phone tricks you into giving away personal data. Almost every website tricks you into being tracked across multiple websites.

Proleps··on The Tech Industry’s Darkest Secret: It’s All About Age
> If I had to guess why it is, I'd say that back-end technologies naturally evolve slower.

I think it is this way because back-end development requires more expertise than GUI development. Steady more experienced developers are better suited than new hires.

Proleps··on Abolish The Patent, Vanquish The Troll
> Patent litigation typically costs defendants between $1 million and $5 million just to stay in the fight.

A battleground where only the rich can win a fight. There doesn't seem to be any justice left in the American courts :(.

The only way to win is to not play their game. It's probably cheaper to buy a shotgun and show up at the doorstep of the person suing you with the message: "I know where you live" :S

Proleps··on The Startup Side Project Bubble
With all this talk about bubbles I'm starting to think there is a bubble bubble :P
Proleps··on Standups are Poisonous
> Morning standups force people to be in work before 10:00. Great when you’re supposed to have the benefit of flexi-time.

I once did an internship at a company where we would do the standup over a conference call, we would also sit. We were such rebels :P.

Proleps··on Ask HN: What code-editor do you use?
Java, C++ : eclipse

python, javascript, LaTeX : Geany in linux, notepad++ in windows.

I also use gedit to quickly edit files sometimes, but Geany has a lot of extra IDE like stuff.

Proleps··on Why Ruby?
Spark is a micro framework for Java[1]. I plan on trying it some time in the future.

Proleps··on A Difficult Situation
If you make a big mistake that costs a lot of money a company is allowed to fire you in most cases.
Proleps··on A Difficult Situation
According to this article[1] this was not a single mistake, but a pattern of how she handles things.

Proleps··on SendGrid Fires Company Evangelist After Twitter Fracas
> these things are hard

>> BOOM.. fired! See what happened there? You said it. I overreacted. You were fired. It actually is a real fear that something you say will unknowingly offend someone and get you in trouble. This has less to do with gender and sexism and more to do with just too many people being incapable of getting along.

Something similar actually happened on Twitter, Steve Marx said something about a lynch mob and she turned it into racism[1]

Proleps··on SendGrid Fires Company Evangelist After Twitter Fracas
> I wouldn't feel uncomfortable around her at all

It is extremely easy to offend this woman. Just look at her twitter posts https[0], she plays every card in the book in this occasion she plays the racism card while arguing that she can't be a racist herself[1].

Proleps··on [dead]
? who keeps removing a post a lot of people are obviously interested in discussing?
Proleps··on SendGrid has terminated the employment of Adria Richards?
> This all seems like such a trivial issue

It should have been, but Adria decided to take the fight to the Internet when she made that blog post and posted the tweets. She chose to do this instead of talking to the guys behind her. If you take a small issue to the online masses it always ends wrong.

Proleps··on The PyCon Incident
I'm glad I'm not a programmer in the US with all this sexism drama happening over there. If I where a programmer in the US I would never visit a conference, feels like walking through a mine field when you can't even make jokes about a dongle.
Proleps··on Poor Man’s Agile: Scrum in 5 Simple Steps
Lots of people use this thread to spill their hate about Agile. But I actually think this is a good article. A lot of small companies have no process whatsoever. Most don't even have a list of requirements or bugs.

I think this article gives you a good start with creating a decent development process for your company.

Proleps··on Learning to code, with no Internet access.
learn python the hard way[1] is available as PDF with instruction videos if you buy it. He could download all the resources before going away.

Don't know about Linux, but there are a lot of beginner html/js/css books available.

Proleps··on Benedictus XVI
God recommends using Comic Sans. Both the discovery of the "God particle" and the tribute to his official spokesman are published in it. Do not ignore this and use it for everything from now on!
