Produce··on I Won't Hire People Who Use Poor Grammar
Oh god. I hate this attitude. Respect is a right, not a privilege. Why should anyone have to earn something so basic? Do we also have to earn our privilege to breathe air? We're all equals and equally deserve respect. Yes, even you after you muttered that banality.

Produce··on The real reason Marissa Mayer left Google: She had to
And this is the whole problem with taking a rational approach to something you know nothing about - you get the wrong answers because you are acting on the wrong information. As pointed out by param, there is a mountain of research on this subject which clearly indicates that a mother is essential to a child's development. A growing body of research shows that a present father is also very important. Nonetheless, we are adapted to the condition of the mother being present during our development, therefore it holds more weight than the father being present. Both parents being present improves things futher.

Blah blah white men blah blah sexist blah blah blah. As mentioned by others, pregnancy has a real physical effect on a woman. As mentioned by countless studies, having your parents around when you're an infant has a huge impact on the rest of your life. None of this is sexist.

And yes, I think that if a multimillionaire has a kid then they should take some time off and do their goddamn job and raise them, no matter the parent's gender. Both mothers and fathers are important in a child's development.

And for the record, I don't hold any of the CEO's you listed in high regard.

Lame. They could address the reasons that people hate them but instead they invade foreign lands then use propaganda to convince people that "it's OK, our bombs contain freedom."
Produce··on Microsoft Expected To Post First Ever Quarterly Loss In Its History
>What's really disastrous, though, is Steve Ballmer's recent comments about how they are determined to compete with Apple on every single front, regardless of whether they have any other reason to be in that portion of the market. This aQuantive debacle is a result of Microsoft trying to do exactly the same thing with Google. With that statement, Ballmer indicated in no uncertain terms that he has learned absolutely nothing from that mistake.

What a stupid strategy that is. The best defense is a good offense, not copying your enemy movement for movement. With this approach, they're always on the chase and never lead. Bad position to be in if you want to, you know, be the leader.

What? This is an awesome design and approach which will appeal to most people. Everyone's seen Batman, watched cartoons and comedies. This hooks into popular culture and uses it to deliver a message. I don't see references to memes here - can you point any out?

Besides, just what the hell is wrong with cats? Maybe you're a dog person but a lot of us are not. Elitist.

Produce··on Watch what you store on SkyDrive–you may lose your Microsoft life
Rent a fracking server and be done with all these third parties. I'm sure that there's a simple, OSS web based file explorer for when you need to browse the files in Firefox. SSHFS will let you mount the drive as if it was native. The cloud is massively overrated for stuff like this.

Even after that it's still not clear. So it's a messaging service without ads? Uhh... So what? How is this audacious or fundamental to the web in any way, shape or form? It just sounds like a Twitter rip off with a different business model. I'm not even sure what the business model is supposed to be except that it's 'not ads'. What a confusing pile of confusion this project is.
Produce··on Oracle launches "a better alternative to CentOS"
>I don't think corporations are evil. In fact, I bet most people on HN don't think that.

I don't think that anything is evil per se, but I do think that corporations and modern businesses are defective by design. Why are they defective? Several reasons.

A) They are frequently more populous than can be effectively managed (also see: Dunbar's number).

B) They are unethical by design since money can be made by simply throwing money in a particular direction. This make no fucking sense whatsoever. Imagine if money didn't exist and we only had physical goods. It would be the equivalent of having 100 logs, putting them on a particular patch of ground then ending up with 200 logs a week later. This just makes no sense.

C) The are unethical by design since the wage gap is huge and the scenario is essentially that many hundreds or thousands of people are working to make a tiny minority extremely rich. It ain't slavery, Bob, but it sure as fuck smells like it.

C part deux) They are unethical by design because when a worker creates something, it is by default not his. Common sense dictates that what comes from your hands belongs to you. The rules of business are such that what comes from thousands of peoples' hands belongs to one person. If there was ever a scam...!

D) The purpose of the business is to ensure it's own survival. A more enlightened approach would be a business which ensures the parent society's survival. This makes more sense because when an entire society flourishes, so do all the businesses contained in it. When a single business flourishes, other businesses and, by extension, parts of society will suffer for it. In other words, the world ain't zero sum and modern business practices do not appear to take this into account.

Produce··on BlackGirlsCode Raises $21,000 To Fund Summer Of Code Program
That's making the assumption that white people cannot possibly be poor and that black women cannot possibly be rich. I, for one, was poor most of my life and I'm white, albeit not in the US but just across the pond. There are plenty of white people who live in abject poverty. Deprivation of basic needs knows no colour, creed or gender. Why draw lines when it would benefit more people to refrain from doing so?

That's the problem with statistics - they work on large masses and derive means, medians and modes. There are real people who aren't accurately represented by such statistics and making decisions solely on said statistics is unfair to them.

Produce··on BlackGirlsCode Raises $21,000 To Fund Summer Of Code Program
So if I started a charity called WhiteMenCode, do you think that it would be fair to all of the other races and genders? Would it be fair that one segment of the impoverished get special treatment? Surely it would be better to organise something like PoorPeopleCode, since that is the segment of society which, in fact, needs help - poor people. Who gives a crap about race or gender? It's bigger than that.

Produce··on How I converted a software thief into a customer
The world isn't so simple that we can slap 'good' and 'bad' labels on everything and expect things to be perfect. It's also not so trivial to condition people that we can simply create a punishment/reward system and expect it to fulfill it's role accurately.

Look at the failure that is the legal system and how badly it addresses the problem of crime. Even under the threat of the harshest penalties, crime still happens. Even after locking someone up in a cage, they are still likely to re-offend.

Think about it - people cooperate with people they like. Trying to take someone's money, physical freedom or whatever else makes you their enemy. People are very unlikely to cooperate with their enemies. The trick is to not trigger that "you're an enemy" response. The result is an open line of communication and a real chance that the behavior will change.

In other words, we're not Pavlov's Dogs and a little common sense goes a long way.

Given how many people are enamored by computing devices which only have one button, it's clear that the vast majority will pay full price instead of going to the trouble of downloading the pirated software, installing it, doing whatever needs to be done for the coupon code to come up and then paying. It's much simpler to buy the damn thing and be done with it. If someone is going through all that trouble, they probably can't afford the retail price.

Produce··on Things to Check in PHP
NO. If you are having performance problems then the first thing you need to do is to run a profiler against your code. If you're optimizing things because you think they might be slow, you're doing it wrong.

Not to mention how dense these suggestions are. Caching speeds things up? Really? Thank you for enlightening all of us.
