PlzSnow··on UK-US surveillance regime was unlawful ‘for seven years’
"I pity your closed-mindedness"

This is the main fallacy of the conspiracy theorist, that those who reject the absurd conspiracy have closed minds.

For more on this, see here: http://theness.com/neurologicablog/index.php/answering-consp...

"it's worth respecting that fact, rather than dismissing it as 'obviously ridiculous'"

That's not how the world works. If someone says "I think the government did 9/11", then it doesn't matter how many people agree with him. His opinion is still idiotic.

Similarly I do not have to respect anti-vaxers or Scientologists, just because there are many of them.

"are you really implying that the recent attacks in France were planned by the government? Or that the 7/7 bombings in London were?"

Welcome to Hacker New, where a sizeable proportion of the readership actually believe this stuff. Also, the NSA read and store everything you do on the Internet.

However, the discussions on technology issues are of a very high standard, which is why many of us are here.

I'm trying to understand your logic. You are saying that because one conspiracy was perhaps true, then this conspiracy is true? That is the logic that my toddler uses.
PlzSnow··on Spending by the UK government on the siege against Julian Assange
My guess would be £0. Why would they need to? A very sizeable part of the population think he's a creepy nerd who's hiding from sexual assault allegations. The later is true, the former subjective.
PlzSnow··on Spending by the UK government on the siege against Julian Assange
Why would Sweden make an exception to their legal processes just for Assange? He's just another person wanted for questioning over allegations over sexual assault. He's not the messiah.

Anyway, as another poster said, these facts were pointed out years ago. But I understand that facts and logic are of no interest to the Messiah's disciples.

PlzSnow··on Spending by the UK government on the siege against Julian Assange
I'm still baffled by your arguments. We live in a modern democratic society. Professionals in the law system examined the Assange case and decided that there was a case to answer. Just because someone on the Internet is "dubious about it" doesn't change that, and I would never want to live in a society where it did.
PlzSnow··on Spending by the UK government on the siege against Julian Assange
I am genuinely baffled by your reply. Assange is wanted for questioning for allegations of sexual assault, and you say he shouldn't have to follow due process and answer them because... because what? Because his political ideals are aligned with your own? Because of an absurd conspiracy that he will be secretly abducted to Central America?
PlzSnow··on Spending by the UK government on the siege against Julian Assange
Assange is wanted for questioning on allegations of sexual assault. Assange is a powerful and connected person, with strong support from a considerable percentage of the population. I am glad that that does not affect the legal process, and I would never want to live in a society where it did.

EDIT: The article says "He has been in a cell, under house arrest, or effectively detained at the Ecuadorian Embassy since December 2010."

This is patently a lie. He chooses to stay in the embassay of his own volition. How can anyone take this article seriously?

PlzSnow··on The Pirate Bay is an FBI honeypot? A disconcertingly plausible conspiracy theory
"And the fact that there isn't nearly enough storage capacity being created in the world to contain said data for any reasonable amount of people?"

The mistake you are making is using facts and logic. This is a discussion about the NSA on HackerNews. Facts and logic are of no interest here.

PlzSnow··on The Pirate Bay is an FBI honeypot? A disconcertingly plausible conspiracy theory
"That claim contradicts what Glenn Greenwald says. Why is he wrong?"

Null hypothesis. His extraordinary claim required extraordinary evidence, and there was none. It is not up to me to prove a negative.

But this is a pointless conversation. There is something about the topic of the NSA on HN... the debate has no logic or sense.

"kind of a idiot"

Errrr...

PlzSnow··on The Pirate Bay is an FBI honeypot? A disconcertingly plausible conspiracy theory
None of these tools are "capturing everything I do on the Internet". They could be used to target an individual in some sense. But not capturing everything that everyone is doing.

The problem with discussions about the NSA on HN is that sense, reasoning and rationality seem to go out the window.

PlzSnow··on The Pirate Bay is an FBI honeypot? A disconcertingly plausible conspiracy theory
Why would I assume that the FBI/NSA are capturing everything I do online? It's an absurd proposition without a shred of evidence.
PlzSnow··on Atom now using Io.js
The 2MB/slowness isn't something that can just be "coded away". It's a direct result of the technology stack chosen. It is not a solvable problem. Therefore Atom cannot succeed beyond niche usage.
PlzSnow··on Atom now using Io.js
Moore's Law should apply, and eventually processing power should catch up. I think we'll see the 2MB limit removed by 1997/1998.
PlzSnow··on Sublime Text 3 builds picking up steam again
I tried Atom for a week. The little half-second delays start to bite after a few days, and after a week you want to throw your computer out the window.

Think about it. It's 2015. My PC has 8 cores running at unimaginable speeds. It has 16 GB of memory. And my text editor couldn't open files over 2097152 bytes.

Am I living on a different planet from everyone else? How can people accept this as a normal situation?

PlzSnow··on Sublime Text 3 builds picking up steam again
I don't understand this line of thinking.

For me a closed-source text editor such as Sublime Text makes me much more productive than it's open-source equivelent. The accumulated productivity gains far outweigh the timecost to learn a new tool, if Sublime Text disappeared (a couple of days at most?).

PlzSnow··on Sublime Text 3 builds picking up steam again
How can it "improve as time goes on"? The developers chose a technology stack that suited them the developers, but which didn't suit the end users of the software.

This happens sometimes when developers make business decisions.

Any improvements will be in the 20%-30% range. Meanwhile, Sublime Text is 10-100 times faster. Atom is dead, in the long term.

PlzSnow··on Sublime Text 3 builds picking up steam again
Atom is far too slow, and eats battery life. This is because of the technical decision to render text in a web view.

The slowness is not a solvable problem. Therefore Atom will fail.

On a more positive note, I am so happy to see SublimeText re-activated. The previous builds worked fine for me, but it's always good to see progress.
