PlutoIsAPlanet··on Driving forward in Android drivers
Curious how that works given the kernel has no stable kernel<>kernel ABI.
PlutoIsAPlanet··on Brain overgrowth dictates autism severity, new research suggests
From personal experience, although it was about a decade ago, my doctor referred to it as Aspergers but put it down as high functioning autism.

This was in the UK though.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on Edge browser ditches react for a faster WebUI 2.0
Wasn't the old old Windows Update a web app that used ActiveX?
PlutoIsAPlanet··on Caddy 2.8
The other biggest example of PHP usage I can think off is Wikipedia.

Whilst PHP is considered dated now and the language has many faults, you can't critic how easy is to get started (drag drop files in a directory and you're done)

PlutoIsAPlanet··on X now treats the term cisgender as a slur
Some people believe sex and gender are different things and gender is just sex based stereotypes. These views are legal and in the UK considered protected.

You wouldn't call someone transgender if they didn't believe they were trans, or someone a christian if they didn't believe in the bible, it's the same the other way round. If someone doesn't think gender is real, calling them it is putting a label on them they don't agree with.

I've then seen the label used to devalue people's opinions on things, so yes it can be a slur. Unfortunately these debates end up being so toxic due to people on both sides.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on Flatpak – a security nightmare – 2 years later (2020)
> nevermind root. The apps have unrestricted access to your filesystem under the same privileges as your user

Easy to get root anyway, just add an alias to sudo to .bashrc and whenever the user follows an online instruction guide into fixing something they'll get root privileges.

or overwrite LD_PRELOAD for the user

or replace the users desktop files and pretend to be another application (because you can overwrite /usr/share/applications launchers in .local/share/applications)

PlutoIsAPlanet··on Flatpak – a security nightmare – 2 years later (2020)
> Why would you give those apps root access?

You shouldn't but you install debs/rpms from the internet which get root permissions during install.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on KeePassXC Debian maintainer has removed all network features
IMHO is a downstream maintainer is going to change a package in a way that doesn't have the intent of the upstream project, it should be published under a different name and that maintainer deal with all bug reports caused by their modified version.
PlutoIsAPlanet··on iPadOS Identified as Digital 'Gatekeeper' Under New EU Tech Rules
> little thought given to privacy and security

They do think about privacy, they just want you to have none.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on 12to11 – run Wayland applications on an X server
Yes, the windowing system requires such to prevent applications with less privileges spying or controlling those with more.

On X, it is possible for an exploit in a browser to gain root if you have an application opened as root.

Although such exploit would be extremely difficult to pull off, state actors will do anything for specific targets.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on Linux fu: getting started with systemd
I believe the only other systemd components required for systemds service manager are journalctl and udev.

for relatively obvious reasons

PlutoIsAPlanet··on Mobile Ad Blocker Will No Longer Stop YouTube's Ads
Adblocking on YouTube is a security requirement given how much fraud and malware is advertised on YouTube.

I'll disable my AdBlocker when YouTube stops trying to sell me crypto currencies from supposedly Elon Musk.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on Radxa Rock 5 ITX: 8-Core ARM Mini ITX Board with LPDDR5 RAM
It's also bad for the planet as it artificially restricts the lifetime in which a board can be used.
PlutoIsAPlanet··on Linux fu: getting started with systemd
> This fact only seems to bother one of the groups.

Because people think other people who they're not paying should not be allowed to rely on systemd for things and support other service managers.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on Linux fu: getting started with systemd
So only people who know how to code should be allowed to setup and configure system services?

What an awful way to gate keep computing.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on Redis re-implemented with SQLite
It can cache in-memory using RocksDBs caching mechanisms.
PlutoIsAPlanet··on Sandboxing all the things with Flatpak and BubbleBox
Someone has combined those things to port Pledge to Linux.

https://github.com/jart/pledge

PlutoIsAPlanet··on Personal VPN services are snake oil
An issue is that they're sold as a way to stop your ISP tracking what you're doing.

But why would I trust a random company with this information over an ISP, who yes aren't always angels, but at least are somewhat accountable.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on Top Europe court chides Switzerland in landmark climate ruling
I'm all for keeping the ECHR but this will just give further ammo to the argument that the ECHR has over extended its original remit.
PlutoIsAPlanet··on Redis re-implemented with SQLite
Its also worth checking out kvrocks, which is a redis interface on top of rockdb that's part of the Apache project, and very well maintained.
PlutoIsAPlanet··on Fedora 41 will unify bin and sbin
Because in this day and age on Fedora, there's practically zero difference between sbin and bin.

You could separate it I guess correctly between system-only bins again, but you'd break existing software that's hardcoded sbin and bin.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on Fedora 41 will unify bin and sbin
In the state of immutable distros that use a modern image format (so not Android), /usr is read only and managed by the system only anyway.

imho we should go the entire way and move /home to /var/home, so anything other than /etc and /var can be read-only, I already place /var on a separate partition with /var/home on RHEL installs.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on AI spam is winning the battle against search engine quality
Same way Google has turned the other way when it comes to fraudulent ads on YouTube.

It's obvious that Elon Musk doesn't want to sell me crypto, how an automated system made by one of the largest technology companies in the world hasn't detected its fraud is alarming, and Google has the resources to also pay for manual review.

They just don't care that their system is being used to ruin people's lives

I saw an ad on YouTube once selling washing up tablets to kids to.... eat.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on [dead]

PlutoIsAPlanet··on RedHat employee bans Hyprland creator from FDO

The email said it wasn't up for discussion.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on Enhance WASM: Back End Agnostic SSR for Web Components
> while you can client-side render, it takes more of that CPU budget

I wonder how Reddit gets indexed given its client-side rendering is painfully slow.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on RedHat employee bans Hyprland creator from FDO
> Oh, and the fact that Vaxry slagged off Lyude publicly in his blog for good-faith enforcement of the code of conduct

From what I see they both slagged each other.

Again though, I'm asking for where's the spreading of hate.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on SableDb – Fast, persistent database supporting Redis API
I did some rookie testing between KVRocks and sableDB using Redis Benchmark

PlutoIsAPlanet··on Seattle shuts down gifted program for having too many white and Asian students
To be fair, in Asian countries they have a different concept of things such as nationality and race, and often they are combined.

Such as China, someone born to Chinese parents in America can be seen as both Chinese and American.

If someone is born to two white Americans in China, they will not be seen as Chinese.

PlutoIsAPlanet··on Seattle shuts down gifted program for having too many white and Asian students
It's just racism with the excuse that it's "progressive" or "liberal" when its not.

Both sides of the political spectrum have extremes.
