PlatoIsADisease··on Fluorite – A console-grade game engine fully integrated with Flutter
Real buttons are more expensive than electronic. Not sure if you care, but people make that mistake more generally.

Game engines are probably trivially cheap to produce in 2026. You forget that Toyota sells 10M cars per year. In 3 years thats 30M cars. What does it cost each buyer for the game engine? 30 cents?

PlatoIsADisease··on U.S. had almost no job growth in 2025
This didn't affect Wii, WiiU, Switch or Switch 2.

Either people are waking up that Nintendo is selling nostalgia or the economy is not doing well.

I hope the former, there is something that feels sick to think Nintendo force fed corporate mascots to me when I was under the age of 1. To this day, I religiously buy Zelda games, even though I haven't enjoyed them since N64. FOMO mind control.

Okay thats nice, but I actually lived through this and its not always this nice.

When you can't run your Nvidia 3060 because the kernel was outdated, you don't really bother with outdated linux anymore.

Do you think we are just making this stuff up? All these comments about bluetooth not working. Bugs not fixed. Having to do surgery with the terminal to get stuff working... We are just making stuff up?

Buddy, I would have loved if outdated linux worked.

PlatoIsADisease··on The switch to Linux and the beginning of my self-hosting journey
>You don’t lose stable. It will only install the package you select and deps.

We are fighting over definitions, but now you are no longer standard. Things will be broken. I know this, I've lived through this for years before I discovered up-to-date distros.

If download Fedora, I'm standard. Everything will work.

>Also the terminal is the main interface for Linux and the BSDs. Why does having to learn it is a negative? A computer is not a toy. You don’t drive a truck with no training.

Thats outdated. That is debian mindset. Fedora just works. No need to use the terminal, sure it works, but you can use the computer for a year without ever touching it.

I need to emphasize, you could. You just don't have a use. You are never sending random lines from a linux form to solve a problem. Why? Because it just works. Sure you might unblock some firewall ports so you can host a server, but you aren't doing surgery.

I cannot emphasize enough that Fedora works. It doesn't need fixing.

Try it.

Maybe I don't understand what markdown support will imply, but doesn't this hide text?

Like, if I have a h2 or url, its going to show as special text rather than the h2 tag?

PlatoIsADisease··on Chrome extensions spying on users' browsing data
My initial solution was:

>Before installing, make each user click a checkbox what access the extension has

However, as I've seen on android, updates do happen, and you are not asked if new permissions are granted. (Maybe they do ask, but this is after an update automatically is taken place, new code is installed)

Here are the two solutions I have, neither are perfect:

>Do not let updates automatically happen for security reasons. This prevents a change in an App becoming malware, but leaves the app open to Pegasus-like exploits.

>Let updates automatically happen, but leaves you open to remote, unapproved installs.

PlatoIsADisease··on The switch to Linux and the beginning of my self-hosting journey
So you have to use terminal and have some unsupported software.... Yeah I'll take Fedora.

Debian is great for servers, why are you using it for desktop?

PlatoIsADisease··on The switch to Linux and the beginning of my self-hosting journey
This is literally why we suggest Fedora.

Bluetooth sucks on Debian-family because the kernel is from 2024... Fedora's kernel is from 3 months ago.

Anyway, enjoy Fedora. Fedora is so good, I won't call it Linux.

PlatoIsADisease··on The switch to Linux and the beginning of my self-hosting journey
The Kernel was released in 2024...

Have you used Fedora? After using Fedora I was actually offended how bad Windows was and how bad Debian family was.

Its the best OS I've used in my lifetime by what feels like an order of magnitude.

My only terminal commands were to unblock some minecraft ports for my kid. You won't find a Ubuntu/Debian user with that experience.

PlatoIsADisease··on The switch to Linux and the beginning of my self-hosting journey
>Admitting that getting 6.18 on Debian is some sort of insurmountable mountain is not something I would do in public while trying to show off my expertise.

I genuinely don't care to show off expertise. I just want a distro that works.

PlatoIsADisease··on The switch to Linux and the beginning of my self-hosting journey
So you lose the stable and have to deal with terminal... Or just use Fedora.
PlatoIsADisease··on The switch to Linux and the beginning of my self-hosting journey
>I started out with Debian

>There are still issues with driver and software compatibility but it is getting better in the recent years thanks to projects like Wine and Proton .

OP, stop using outdated linux. Debian is intentionally outdated. You will never have a good experience with drivers when you are always using 2 year old kernels and software. 99.9% of humans think the word 'Stable' means bug free, but that isnt what Debian means by it.

I recommend Fedora, which is not Arch, its just up-to-date linux.

PlatoIsADisease··on The switch to Linux and the beginning of my self-hosting journey
After you get frustreted having to use the terminal to make Ubuntu work, try Fedora.

Ubuntu is outdated linux, it part of Debian-family, which goes by the misleading name 'stable'. Its not stable like a table. Its stable like software versions are frozen, despite bugs being fixed.

Fedora isnt Arch, I think most Debian-family users don't realize they are unrelated. Fedora is just well maintained and generally up to date.

Wild guess: You like Apple more than Google.

I only guessed that because that is a strange conclusion to draw when Apple was involved in PRISM, they worked with China to black pro- democracy hong kong apps, and I believe they turned over data to China and Russia.

Apple's PR/marketing is best in class, so I can also see this just being a knowledge level error rather than bias.

My company makes custom software for small and mid sized companies.

I have a little bit of dread, but I tell myself my niche is automating (real/physical) engineering, which is different from 100% software/data.

If we can automate for 1/100th the cost, that just means we get harder problems. Right?

PlatoIsADisease··on AI doesn’t reduce work, it intensifies it

It moved outside the US.

PlatoIsADisease··on Is particle physics dead, dying, or just hard?
If I have to make a guess, we are at the level of pre-copernicus in particle physics.

We are finding local maximums(induction) but the establishment cannot handle deduction.

Everything is an overly complex bandaid. At some point someone will find something elegant that can predict 70% as good, and at some point we will realize: 'Oh that's great, the sun is actually at the center of the solar system, Copernicious was slightly wrong thinking planets make circular rotations. We just needed to use ellipses!'

But with particles.

I'm mostly interested in what goes wrong.

I've made enough of these projects to know that ~75% need modifications that were not anticipated. For instance, I made a freezer temp sensor to php email for cases where the freezer stops working... but when I opened the freezer, it would send an email. I needed to sample for 30 minutes or something.

Maybe this was simple and you will be part of the 25% that work perfect and need 0 updating.

PlatoIsADisease··on In the AI gold rush, tech firms are embracing 72-hour weeks
If anyone wants to sterotype the proper response to this thread, I'm down. I'll play:

Work from home made me more productive. AI Coding makes bad code that is harder to code. If we worked 10 hour days, I'd be more productive. Nuclear and Solar power... CEOs make bad code for everyone. If you spend little on programmers, you get bad quality.

Alright I lost a bit at the end. Maybe someone can ChatGPT this into the 4chan sniper meme. "What the ... did you just fucking say about me, you little ..."?

PlatoIsADisease··on In the AI gold rush, tech firms are embracing 72-hour weeks
Brain power vs muscle power.

Let us not be silly that these are the same.

But also, I'm on team "Its really hard to do the same mental job ~20 hours a week". I can do 2hr x 3 cycles x 5 days a week. But that means breaks.. When I did 12 hour days I was terrible at hours 9-12.

PlatoIsADisease··on Five disciplines discovered the same math independently
Everything you mentioned is a simplified system that applies in specific defined cases.

Its almost like the math came first, then the problem later.

You might want to read about induction vs deduction, this is deduction. I don't totally agree with Karl Popper, but at least he can explain why we see this math in multiple places.

PlatoIsADisease··on Five disciplines discovered the same math independently
I'm usually pretty pro-blog. I like when people have an interest in things. No ads, just someone wanting to prove their intelligence and popularity. But... OP... You didn't even explain the math.

Anyway, none of this is that surprising since deduction takes higher level ideas and tests them on lower level to prove the hypothesis.

If anyone wants to read Karl Popper, this will seem significantly less noteworthy.

I'm not caught up on fringe and irrelevant political groups, but I think Trump has a base completely different than a pre-2016 republican would align with.

Before you would have: Lifelong Red Team Republican(40%), non ideological Opportunists (30%), Ideological Crazies (30%)

Today you have: Lifelong Red Team Republican(40%), non ideological Opportunists (10%), Ideological Crazies For Trump (50%)

The GOP lost that upper-middle class(opportunists) and they lost ideological believers(pre 2016 crazies). Given how fast it was lost, I expect it to come back in some manner, but Trumpism is a cult of personality rather than ideology.
