It will happen. We've been the frogs boiled in the pot for years, accepting forced attestation. Eventually they'll close off running unsigned code, and the PCs will probably have bootloaders locked to Windows as well, so you can't escape.

Isn't this a death knell for F-Droid, at least for running on most hardware? Since they require their own builds/attestation?
The Overton Window for computing keeps inching towards gatekeepers having total control over devices. I can't help but imagine myself lurching along on the last somewhat open hardware I can cobble together in a couple of decades, because I refuse to drink the verification can to continue...
(Sigh) I really miss tech that wasn’t actively trying to exploit my brain, empty my wallet, or both.
Yeah... I bought an Instinct 2S hoping it would scratch the same itch as Pebble, but the UX is really awful.
The Pebble OS UX is really something special because it's so... obviously correct. Vertical menus just a few layers deep. You can set shortcuts on long-press but they aren't required to do the basic functions. It boggles my mind that Garmin cannot make an interface that doesn't require a lot of memorization in remembering all the right buttons to press/hold.
I have an easy guide for avoiding an avenue for cancellation: if you find yourself influential in a community, and find yourself rooming with someone junior in the community (probably do not do this), treat the shared quarters like a professional work environment, and behave accordingly.

Advocating for change against the violent factions of the world, is indeed, a good thing to do.
The beautiful thing about public media is that it can broadcast things that don't have a profit-motive for being broadcast.
What does the "public" in "public broadcasting" mean to you?
That's why this careless crusade against governmental institutions is so horrific. Institutions with decades of history are being destroyed, and it would take years to decades to spin up something even close to equivalent, in an insane political environment where every public institution is framed as horrible socialism.
If we had a more reasonable period like a decade, it would be a driver for creating new art, and prevent works from being locked away arbitrarily until our great-grandchildren can enjoy them (unless the art was just... lost to time).
I am eager to learn more if you have some data/links on this
WRT home invasions, I'm sure the ubiquity of guns in the US is another relevant dimension.
> We increasingly put people in bad situations and then blame them when they lash out.
They are not _justifying_ it, they are calling out a cause/effect relationship. When people are desperate, they do destructive things. And our society is doing things that increase the number of desperate people.
I agree that the American government is complicit but private industry is no less complicit.
Capital wants to remove the population of Gaza and turn it into beachside real estate. This much has been said out loud by the very people who are acting to hollow out the government.
You don’t fix a house’s plumbing by detonating a bomb under the foundation.
Why would anyone trust The Browser Company after this? Who's to say Dia won't be dead in a few years in favor of the next trend?
And they won't even open-source Arc because of some "secret sauce" libraries they think are special. Shameful.
How does this work in the context of this discussion?
But even if that doesn't happen, having a new Pebble that will hopefully last a few years or more will be a victory! All my original Pebbles are quite beat up or have hardware issues (failing P2 buttons :'( )
Garmin and Casio have plenty of button-only devices, but they seem to not really understand how to make a UI flow well. They all feel kludgy and arcane to use. Whereas pebble was a very simple layered menu system without any over-complication.
I would ask, when denying people their self-determination, does it start and end with trans people, or is there more? If someone is raised as a Muslim and converts to Christianity, do you deny them that? Who is the arbiter of who gets to decide who gets self-determination and who doesn't? I doubt billionaires, nor politicians, are the best authority for that.
Also, keep in mind that you're railing against one of the smallest, and most persecuted, minorities on the planet. Why do this? Were you harmed by a trans person in some way, or were you just told to do this by someone on social media? Have you met a trans person and talked to them about their experiences?
If you want to be an asshole at home, you're free to do so insofar that it is legal. But if you want to be an asshole at work, that should not be enshrined in the same way as religious belief as pg suggests.
Unless you think it should be allowed, but what level of assholery is allowed? Is assholery against trans people the only assholery allowed? Is it okay to be an asshole to disabled people too? To women? To someone of a different color?
Because such behavior is a direct and targeted attack on an individual or individuals, not the concept of gender identity, transness, etc.
