PerryCox··on Hewlett Packard Enterprise Is Said to Plan About 5k Job Cuts
Yep, HPE still has their MyRooms product that comes to mind. I imagine that is something that still makes money.
PerryCox··on Firefox Multi-Account Containers
Got a link?
PerryCox··on Hackers send silent commands to speech recognition systems with ultrasound
That's actually a very good question. I'm very curious to learn what was the actual cause of that.
PerryCox··on iOS 11 Safari will automatically strip AMP links from shared URLs
Not breaking the back button should be #1 on every webpages priority list. If you break my back button I can almost guarantee I will stop using your site because in my mind the only sites that do that are spam/scams.
PerryCox··on Automated Python 2 to 3 code translation
If you enter the code above into the website it responds with:

maybe the code is wrong?

PerryCox··on Dead People Are Posting Anti-Net Neutrality Comments to FCC Website
Hopefully the EFF can challenge this in court and this provides good evidence that the FCC is ignoring what Americans want.
PerryCox··on JDK 9 modules voted down by EC
On 2017-05-03 Red Hat voted No with the following comment: Red Hat is voting NO on this JSR. The Red Hat middleware team, other members of the EC and Java community members, have mentioned publicly and in more detail our concerns (here https://developer.jboss.org/blogs/scott.stark/2017/04/14/cri... and here https://developer.jboss.org/servlet/JiveServlet/download/38-...). We have also discussed with our own OpenJDK team, which made good counter arguments to several of the concerns, but in the end we believe a NO vote is the correct course of action. In previous votes and comments on the EG list we have articulated the view that from a middleware/SE developer perspective we believe that Jigsaw does not fulfil its original goals of being a module system which can be used by the likes of Java EE. We understand that after inception the original goals of the EG were initially changed to try to focus it on a module system to be used solely to modularise the JVM and that caused some architecture and implementation approaches which made it difficult for it to be a module system to be used by SE and EE developers. Unfortunately during the lifetime of the EG the goal appeared to switch back to trying to make it a module system for Java developers but previous implementation decisions appear not to have been revisited or could not be changed and as a result the expectations around Jigsaw have not been met by the implementation. Therefore, we are worried about the impact of the current implementation on the wider Java community, particularly existing projects and products including, but also beyond, Java EE. We have raised several issues within the EG list to try to rectify a few of these things in what we believe would have been a minimally invasive manner but they have been rejected. Furthermore, we believe that there has been insufficient consensus in the EG for a series of changes so dramatic to the JVM and which could have an equally dramatic impact on the Java communities, as well as a lack of openness on receiving and discussing community input. We believe that a more considered evaluation of all input and consensus gathering should not take too much time and would result in something which would be better received by the entire Java ecosystem.
PerryCox··on NASA's Software Catalog
Site was having trouble loading for me so I found an archive of it: http://archive.is/mvLFT
PerryCox··on Andy Weir’s Best Seller ‘The Martian’ Gets a Classroom-Friendly Makeover
It's good that kids will get to read this as part of their class, but America as a country needs to relax when it comes to swearing. How much damage can reading the word fuck do to someone who is 13-18 years old?
PerryCox··on Apple Park Opens to Employees in April
>Imagine a world without Apple computers pushing the envelope. We'd still be using wired mice and ugly black boxes.

Wow talk about drinking the kool aid. Apple did not invent the wireless mouse, that honor belongs to Logitech[1].

PerryCox··on Altered States: Self-Experiments in Chemistry (2012)
I thought this was an amazing read. It was particularly interesting to see how long it took him to realize that he actually may have a drug problem.
PerryCox··on 22 Years of Delphi and It Still Rocks

PerryCox··on CPython migration to GitHub scheduled for today
Yeah that's exactly how I feel. I've used all three (gitlab, bitbucket, and github).

If the OP is that worried about github going down, just add a pushurl in .git/config to another host and that solves the problem.

PerryCox··on Dramatic new discoveries illuminate the lost Indus civilization
I had never heard of this civilization before so this was a very interesting read. I would also recommend, for people like myself who are just finding out about this group of people, to have a look at the Wikipedia article[1].

PerryCox··on The psychology of why we're irrationally more scared of terrorism than guns
Yeah I would be very interested in seeing what the statistics are without counting suicides as being "shot dead".
PerryCox··on Nicotine Normalizes Brain Activity Deficits That Are Key to Schizophrenia
He could work for NASA in which case his code would go through millions of dollars of analysis before it's run. ;)
PerryCox··on Nicotine Normalizes Brain Activity Deficits That Are Key to Schizophrenia
I don't believe he is mad that his psychiatrist is not doing academic research, but instead mad that he is not listening to his claims about smoking having a benefit to his mental illness.
PerryCox··on Mozilla launches new brand identity
Yep, plus the announcement makes it slightly harder to download Firefox. That seems like a bad idea to me.

PerryCox··on Unsubstantiated Report Has Compromising Information on Trump
CNN reported that John McCain got this information a while back and that he found the contents of it so damning that he personally gave it to the FBI director James Comey. The FBI already had received those reports from this intelligence firm but still it says a lot that McCain thought it necessary to personally deliver them.

Here is a link from BuzzFeed that they site as a source: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/3259984-Trump-Intell...

Note: These are just allegations at the moment and the link is not proof of anything but it is still pretty insane.

PerryCox··on Super-Flexible Liquid Crystal Device for Bendable and Rollable Displays
I believe creaghpatr was talking about American Football. The coaches already use radios which have speakers inside the quarterback's helmet to relay the plays to them. It seems like this would be a logical jump as they could get more information and crowd noise would not be a factor.
PerryCox··on German judges explain their decision that ad-blocking software is legal
Read the README. ABP sold out a while back and now shows ads on certain websites who pay money to ABP. uBlock Origin doesn't show ads on any website unless you specifically allow it.
PerryCox··on What the Heck Is Happening at Apple?
> Aren't they allowed to sit on the iPhone? Why must they come up with amazing new stuff when they've already got a mountain of cash and loyal fans who love the point release updates?

Apple cannot rest on their laurels because if they stop innovating Android manufactures will implement all of their features and sell the phones for cheaper than an iPhone. The Google Pixel is a killer phone and could easily steal some iPhone market share if a new iPhone does not keep iterating with new features.

If Apple keeps removing two features for every new one that they add, that's going to upset some customers.

PerryCox··on KDE Project releases KDE 1
If you want a DE that is almost as lightweight as MATE, but has a more modern feel I would recommend Cinnamon[1]. There is also a Fedora spin if you prefer that to Debian based distros.

I've been using Cinnamon as my DE for about a year now and I absolutely love it. The biggest thing that made me switch is the fact that it just works. GNOME would shit the bed every time I docked my computer into its docking station, Cinnamon handles it just fine and can even remember my monitor configurations.

PerryCox··on Apple Event on September 7th
And the day that is announced is the day I switch to Android. I'm fine with the idea of improving upon the 3.5mm headphone jack, but until we have a standard that all other phone companies use, I'm not changing.
PerryCox··on Trent Reznor says YouTube is “built on the backs of free, stolen content”
I agree with this 100%. Since I started using Steam several years ago I haven't pirated any game. It's actually more of a hassle to torrent a game, unpack it, mount the iso, get it installed, and hope that it runs normally. Steam already has my credit card info saved and within four clicks I can have a game downloading.
PerryCox··on The Al-Qaeda Leader Who Wasn’t: The Shameful Ordeal of Abu Zubaydah
I wonder if that had been worded as American citizen, instead of suspected terrorist, if the results would have been any different. Even so that is still too high of a number of people who are ok with torture.
PerryCox··on Online Dating and the Death of the 'Mixed-Attractiveness' Couple
That sounds pretty creepy but I can understand how big of a factor smell is in regards to dating.
