PerfectElement··on Personalized Hey Siri
You can say "Hey Google".
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: How many of you have used Orkut?
Growing up in Brazil, Orkut was as popular as Facebook is now; most people had an Orkut account.

Personally, I made a few new friends, connected with some high school colleagues and met a long term girlfriend.

I miss its simplicity. The lack of a news feed was a feature, not a bug.

PerfectElement··on Ask HN: Are there any reasonable alternatives to MacBook Pro for developer?
The Surface Book 2 track pad is pretty decent and customizable.
PerfectElement··on Stripe Billing
I have 1000+ active customer subscriptions on Stripe. Does it mean that my fees have just increased 0.4%?
PerfectElement··on Pilot.com raises $15M to bring bookkeeping into the modern era
Is there something like this for Canadian businesses?
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: What foods do you eat to optimise brain function/problem solving skills?
Whole plants, mostly starchy complex carbohydrates and legumes.
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: Where do you deploy to in 2018 and how?
Right, I replicate the database. Latency hasn't been a problem for our volume. During our peak hours we get 30 requests/second, so it's pretty manageable.
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: Where do you deploy to in 2018 and how?
Bare metal means I'm not running on VMs, but on dedicated servers, like the ones you can find on OVH and many others.
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: Where do you deploy to in 2018 and how?
I do things in an old-school way. 2 Bare metal servers at different data centers with totaluptime.com acting as a load balancer with auto-failover.

Deployment is done via SFTP by pressing the publish button in Visual Studio. This will deploy to the inactive server. I then manually trigger tests on GhostInspector (this could be automated via API) to make sure I didn't break anything. Then I run a custom script to make the load balancer redirect traffic to the upgraded server.

Solo founder, small bootstrapped business generating 50k/month with 1000 paying customers. Hosting costs are under $500. I could double the number of clients without needing to upgrade the hardware. I looked into moving to AWS or Azure, but can't justify paying 4x more for the same performance.

PerfectElement··on The Business of SaaS
> The jury is not in yet, but it feels that the voluntary churn is a lot less for the customers paying more, compared to the lower price point.

I noticed the same. Our $29.90 plan churn is 3x higher than our more expensive plans.

PerfectElement··on The Quorn revolution: the rise of ultra-processed fake meat
That's the prevailing food paradigm among HN readers who have something to add to this topic, which is about a product that is mainly consumed by vegetarians and vegans.
PerfectElement··on A todo list for new ASP.NET Core projects
In the case of the configuration manager, the test project would have its own underlying configuration file.
PerfectElement··on Sedate a Plant, and It Seems to Lose Consciousness. Is It Conscious?
I understand where you are coming from, but instead of judging veganism based on one vegan who harassed you, why not read about the fundamental concepts? Peter Singer or Tom Regan are a good start.

One way to understand why certain vegans act like this, is to learn about Secondary Traumatic Stress Disorder. This is more common than it looks and watching documentaries like Earthlings can definitely trigger it on people who are not well equipped to witness this level of violence.

PerfectElement··on Amazon announces candidate cities for HQ2
Given IT salaries in Canada, it would also be easier to attract Canadian engineers who don't want to move to the US.
PerfectElement··on The day I accidentally killed a little boy
Same here. I cringe when I see the common HN rhetoric that parents now a days are over-protective. Go say that to parents who lost a child and now live in regret.

Kids are unpredictable. I remember being 7 years old and waiting with my mom to cross a busy street. For some reason that today is unknown to me, I decided to just run across the street as soon as the lights turned yellow. I almost got hit and my mom almost had a heart attack. I use this example to keep me alert when I'm with my daughter in a potentially dangerous but seemingly safe environment. You never know what's going on in their little heads.

PerfectElement··on The Spice of Life
Forgot nuts, seeds and mushrooms.
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: 2018 resolutions?
Subscribe to /r/vegan if you haven't yet, and feel free to ask for help. You'll find people with similar goals and lot of people willing to help.
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: Has working remotely harmed your career growth?
Working remotely and having more control over my schedule (they don't always come together) allowed me to work on my side project until it was making enough money to cover my living expenses.

The only problem is that now, after running my own business for a few years, I cannot phantom the idea of going back to a regular job. In that sense, my career as an employee is over.

PerfectElement··on Ask HN: What to do if you hate working for someone else and arent an entrepreneur?
Whenever I felt like that, I used a mental hack to make me feel better. I would sit down and start to think (or write) about all the things I am grateful for. Coming from a third world country, it was easy to see how good it was to be highly employable and live in a relatively safe society. This would instantly put me in a good mood and make me feel proud of my achievements.

Being grateful doesn't mean you should accept your lot in life and stop striving for improvements. It will just help you make peace with where you are at right now, so you can focus on your next steps without the negative pressure.

Today I run my own business and make more money than I ever expected, and I still use this method whenever I'm having a bad day.

PerfectElement··on Ask HN: Small Biz owners (ROI $50K+), how much did Tech/Stack matter in success?
For my SaaS, the tech stack mattered a lot. I resisted the temptation to pick the hottest stack, and instead went with the boring stack I've been working with for 10 years. This allowed me to spend more time focusing on the business and less time fighting with the language/framework.
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: Best way to search and collect platform-agnostic podcast links?
After testing several podcast apps for Android, this was the one that stuck.

The ability to quickly scroll through unfinished episodes was the killer feature that others are lacking. I listen to different podcasts depending on what I'm doing (running, cooking, preparing to sleep, etc), and all other apps, at best, required several clicks to find an unfinished episode from the previous day.

PerfectElement··on America’s ‘Retail Apocalypse’ Is Really Just Beginning
He or she is probably not North American.
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: Is there something wrong with internet right now?
Comcast says it's been resolved for most customers now: https://twitter.com/comcastcares/status/927636388517838848
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: What is your “I wish I did it sooner” moment?
No, I think he's just referring to refined flour. Carbohydrates can also be found in whole grains, legumes, fruits, etc.
PerfectElement··on Too much fructose can damage your liver, just like too much alcohol
You misinterpreted what the parent said. Whole grains and fruits are not unbound fructose.
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: What can I do as a software eng to help global environmental problems?
For #4, there is happycow.net. It's great for finding vegan/vegetarian food in a neighborhood you are not familiar with.
PerfectElement··on Text-only NPR
Why not download something like Pocket Casts? It lets you easily download episodes and, IIRC, you don't need to create an account.
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: What is the best way to spend my time as a 17-year-old who can code?
I can't believe this is the top comment.
PerfectElement··on Ask HN: Sell my startup for $14M because I can't raise $2M?
> I don't know what your revenue is, but I'd guess a few hundred k ARR.

Is it normal for a SaaS with a few hundred k in ARR to be worth $14 million?

PerfectElement··on Ask HN: Sell my startup for $14M because I can't raise $2M?
Can you give more details about your startup? Were you a single founder bootstrapping?
