Perceval··on Do we live in a society without a counterculture?
> homophobic, racist, sexist, emotionally and mentally stunted incels

This is the counter-culture. The dominant culture opposes all of these things and makes obligatory the celebration of the opposite values. 4chan being one of the few lightly-restricted free speech zones allows for culture generation that would be censored anywhere else. Counter-culture is supposed to be edgy, just like jazz and rock were edgy, greasers/rockabilly were edgy, beatniks were edgy, hippies were edgy, disco was edgy, punks were edgy, LGBTQ was edgy, and so on. Every one of them were described by dismissive epithets just like the string you put together about how awful and contrary to decency they were.

Perceval··on Times New Roman is being phased out at the State Department, replaced by Calibri
Dyslexia associations have recommended Comic Sans as a font that allows for easier reading comprehension. Experts say that opposition to Comic Sans is ableist: https://www.thecut.com/2020/08/the-reason-comic-sans-is-a-pu...

I, for one, think all State Dept cables should henceforth be transmitted in Comic Sans, so as to provide maximum accessibility.

Perceval··on Times New Roman is being phased out at the State Department, replaced by Calibri
Looks more like Helvetica. For example, look at the leg on the capital R.
Perceval··on The Next Button
Apple bought Cue in order to bring the "surfacing what's temporally relevant to the user" experience to Siri. I don't really see much of what Cue worked on manifesting in Siri since the acquisition, except for the Siri watchface for Apple Watch.

Perceval··on JFK Assassination Records – 2022 Additional Documents Release
The White House and DOD still use handwritten routing slips at the highest levels to track memo packages, sign-offs, comments, and orders given in response.
Perceval··on Apple Has Reportedly Rejected TSMC's Chip Price Hike of 6%
> bring in the US Department of Defense or US government in general

This is a guaranteed route to introducing even more delays, cost overruns, schedule overruns, onerous requirements, intrusive oversight, and about a trillion meetings and studies along the way.

If you want to go fast, stay far far away from the USG.

Perceval··on French scientist's photo of ‘distant star’ was chorizo
This article presupposes that Proxima Centauri is not, in fact, made of chorizo. Whereas we have long known that the moon is made of cheese. I think Klein is floating a test balloon to gauge the public's willingness to consume the 'celestial charcuterie' theory of the heavens.

Perceval··on Map Projection Transitions
Really love your previous work on ocean-centered maps like the Spilhaus. Keep up the good work.
Perceval··on New on Reddit: Comment search, improved search results relevance, search design
It was really just one trick, which was to immediately sticky select new posts. Those posts would garner large amounts of upvotes immediately by virtue of being stickied at the top of a subreddit where most users did not browse reddit overall but rather just browsed the sub. Reddit's algorithm favors posts that really take off with lots of votes right away, so as a consequence The_Donald's posts were constantly making r/all.

Perceval··on How many people have Q Clearance?
CNWDI is DOD-only. Q and L are DOE.
Perceval··on How many people have Q Clearance?
You could tell that Q Anon was fake from the very first post, because they said Q was the "highest clearance," a statement that is doubly incorrect. Q is an access, not a clearance. Confidential, Secret, and Top Secret are the only clearances—people with Q must have a Top Secret clearance. And, Q doesn't provide you access to higher level information about global politics than Top Secret, it provides you access to information about nuclear weapon design. None of the things Q Anon purported to have insight into were at all related to the actual information controlled by the Q access.
Perceval··on Unfolding the Earth: Myriahedral Projections (2008)
Ocean-centered projections are some of my favorite projections to track down. Myriahedral, dymaxion, spilhaus, and one or two others make for fine ocean-centered maps. Students have a new perspective on Mahan's notion of seapower or Mackinder's "unity of the ocean" when you show them one of those.
Perceval··on “Cat Person” and Me
> I'm also disturbed by the idea that all of society, all accomplishment, achievement, and maybe even all relationships are the result of power dynamics.

You can thank the dominance of Foucault in the academy for that.

Perceval··on We only ever talk about the third attack on Pearl Harbor
> a successful wargame is about as strong evidence as you can get

Having direct experience with wargames, I have to disagree with this. Wargames are weak evidence that too often lead people to draw unwarranted conclusions from an n of 1. The adjudication of moves by blue and red teams by the white cell is more arbitrary than not, and white cell adjudicators will often rule in ways that continue to present dilemmas for the players for the purpose of extending the experiential utility of the game. Those adjudication decisions are not strictly (nor could they be) representative of reality.

Doing a well-run wargame is very difficult, and doing a sufficient number of them simultaneously in order to test a hypothesis (with an n greater than even 1-2) is almost never done.

Wargames are more experiential and exploratory, they do not generate anything close to evidence.

Perceval··on The most effective malaria vaccine yet discovered
Quinine is better as a prophylaxis rather than a treatment - i.e. for preventative or early-stage use, not once it's developed into a bad case. Low doses early (like in the tonic water of the late 1800s) could help prevent one from catching malaria while avoiding the nasty side effects of larger quinine doses needed for treating an advanced case.
Perceval··on DOJ Argues: US can kill own citizens without review when state secrets involved
Obama did not modernize the U.S. nuclear arsenal. He promised to modernize it in exchange for Republican support in the Senate to pass the New START arms control deal. But he let the nuclear enterprise fall into such disrepair that a major scandal emerged in 2013, leading to a major DOD effort to repair the enterprise after a review in 2014: https://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-19-29. He kicked the can down the road on modernization of the arsenal itself until the very tail end of his administration, so that it was up to Trump in 2017 to follow through on the promise Obama made back in 2010. All of this occurred after Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Perceval··on DOJ Argues: US can kill own citizens without review when state secrets involved
At least Kissinger ended a major war. Obama ended none and started U.S. involvement in more.
Perceval··on Severe brain injury and paralysis temporarily reversed with a sleeping pill
I had a good experience with Trazadone. Very easy to get to sleep, eliminated anxiety about going to sleep, and got restful sleep, with only a little grogginess in the morning. No withdrawal when I stopped cold turkey after 2 years. Nowadays I just have valerian tea or magnesium before bed.

Perceval··on The Growth of Reddit
r/the_Donald was "quarantined" by the admins, so it cannot be discovered by users in the same way as other subreddits. That cut off a lot of the organic growth that you would normally see, and it cut off users who might normally see r/the_Donald on the r/all or r/popular wander in to comment/argue. People who are not already subscribers just no longer even see anything at all from r/the_Donald.

Perceval··on I’m leaving China
Being able to send a dish back doesn't exist because waiters rely on tips. If restaurant owners and managers didn't accept it, waiters would not be permitted to do it. It's not like waiters take a plate back to the line and beg the cooks to do another one because otherwise they won't get tipped. "The customer is always right" is why American service (in general, not just in restaurants) is customer-friendly. It has nothing to do with tipping waitstaff.
Perceval··on White House announces 25 percent tariff on Chinese tech goods
Trump has been talking about the need for tariffs and industrial policy since the 1980s. This is not some scheme he's cooked up on the spur of the moment.
