PearlRiver··on Voyager 1 runs on 69 KB of memory and an 8-track tape recorder
I watched a documentary about Voyager once. It was fascinating seeing all these men and women huddled around a tiny little screen and a telex printer to see all their theories about Saturn become real.

It was the Neil Armstrong moment for astronomy.

PearlRiver··on TSA lines are so out of control that travelers are hiring line-sitters
The people arriving on private jets have always bypassed these bureaucratic procedures. Brotherhood and equality.
PearlRiver··on Private equity turned vulnerable elderly people into human ATMs
It was never an attractive choice- people simply did not have options. In my country it was not until the 1950s that retirement homes were invented and the elderly finally got their social security (remember pensions did not exist).

People who think the government is bad have never met a corporation.
PearlRiver··on U.S. uses hundreds of Tomahawk missiles on Iran, alarming some at Pentagon
The US dumped more bombs on North Korea than all of WW2 combined and it still ended up in a stalemate.
PearlRiver··on 21,864 Yugoslavian .yu domains
Slovenia and Croatia are members of the European Union- I would say that is pretty relevant.
PearlRiver··on Fear and denial in Silicon Valley over social media addiction trial
A lot of people make their job their identity instead of something to pay off the mortgage with. Which in turn creates a lot of denial about your actions.
PearlRiver··on Western carmakers' retreat from electric risks dooming them to irrelevance
Germany is a car country. They live in the cult of ICE. It seems to me that the less people give a shit about cars the more likely they are to embrace EV.
PearlRiver··on How BYD got EV chargers to work almost as fast as gas pumps
The Chinese were smart enough to ban US companies only when their own people could match.
PearlRiver··on Hawaii's worst flooding in 20 years threatens dam, prompts evacuations
All I know is that places like RoK, Taiwan and Japan get typhoons every year and pretty much the only thing that happens is that flights are cancelled.
PearlRiver··on 90% of crypto's Illinois primary spending failed to achieve its objective
A lot of rich people were afraid democracy would change the world but it turns out those with money will always have the power.

And this is not an American thing every country has its lobbying industry.

PearlRiver··on Oil and gas prices jump after Iran and Israel attack gasfields
Is this not the heart of the problem? Israel has been killing Iranians for years. Nobody can guarantee that Israel would not break a cease fire when they feel like it.

I fear that both sides are acting completely rational: Israel wants to wipe out Iran and Iran is doing whatever they can to survive.

PearlRiver··on Oil and gas prices jump after Iran and Israel attack gasfields
Friendly reminder that every member of Trump's cabinet is a multi millionaire. This is just a game for them and there are no consequences for losing.
PearlRiver··on Europe sleepwalked into yet another energy crisis
No plan survives an encounter with Donald Trump.
PearlRiver··on Leviathan (1651)
Imagine you grow up in a pedo cult and one day black vans drive on the ranch with FBI agents.

Government bad is such an insufferable American take and I scream every time I hear it.

PearlRiver··on Trevor Milton is raising funds for a new jet he claims will transform flying
Party of family values (just don't ask what goes on behind the front door).
PearlRiver··on Pentagon expands oversight of Stars and Stripes, limits content
Carpet bombing does not win wars everyone knows that but a ground invasion is off-limits.
PearlRiver··on Pentagon expands oversight of Stars and Stripes, limits content
Everything makes sense when you get out of your bubble and realise most people don't even own stock options. Do you think ants contemplate how the world looks like from a bird's eye?
PearlRiver··on Small U.S. town, big company. Can it weather the tariff Blizzard? (Digi-Key) (2025)
Meanwhile China has a 1200 billion trade surplus. They are flooding the world with cheap Chinese shit despite the bloviating orange.
PearlRiver··on Hollywood Enters Oscars Weekend in Existential Crisis
I have a big balcony facing direct sunlight to the south which has saved me a lot of money.
PearlRiver··on Most of the US economy is in a recession
The US killed a lot of people in Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq and it didn't mean squat.

Are we just doomed to repeat this bullshit?

PearlRiver··on Most of the US economy is in a recession
Yeah in rich countries nobody is going to starve- at worst you'll have to shop at Aldi. In Africa the price of bread actually matters...
PearlRiver··on How important was the Battle of Hastings?
The rest of Europe turned into republics or republic monarchies. The land is owned by the state.
PearlRiver··on Maybe there's a pattern here?
Americans WANT the imperialism and genuinely believe that becoming an American second tier citizen is something everyone wants.
PearlRiver··on Lawmakers Want DoD Investigated for Biblical 'Armageddon' Claims
I thought Christians got over this when they lost Jerusalem in the Crusades and switched the holy land for Rome.
PearlRiver··on PC processors entered the Gigahertz era today in the year 2000 with AMD's Athlon
I was a PC gamer in the late 90s. It was very expensive. Nowadays you can build a nice rig and you can be sure to play all the latest games for 5 years.
PearlRiver··on Utah's online porn tax proposal poses a major threat to civil liberties
So why not put normal sales tax on it like with everything else? I do not see the difference between taxing Netflix or Only Fans.
PearlRiver··on The worst acquisition in history, again
We as citizens are supposed to keep ourselves informed and vote on things. Very few of us can fly all over the world to see things with our own two eyes so we have to outsource this fact finding. Priests, journalists, the goddamn CIA- they all have agendas.
PearlRiver··on Block the “Upgrade to Tahoe” alerts
I feel the same way with smartphones, everyone wants more battery. Ten years ago it might be difficult to find a place were you can charge your phone but now there are sockets everywhere.
PearlRiver··on Block the “Upgrade to Tahoe” alerts
I am at that age were I do not want anything new. Windows is still basically what it was when I was young- with the caveat that you have to spend a few hours tweaking it. Which is not a huge deal for something you do once every 5 years.
