You have not followed the gold price over the last couple of years... Definitely not true anymore.

A quick search says maybe the last year it was true was in 2003.

Paradigm2020··on We've made the world too complicated
Human civilization is often used to describe the last ~ 12k years of us becoming farmers making cities etc.

But way before that, approximately around the time we had both mastered fire and good enough communication skills neanderthals and other homo became the very top of the food chain and started massively altering this planet.

I think scientists in the relevant field call the current extinction period the 4th? One caused by humans.

Sustainable is a "loaded word/concept" of the imprecise language we call English... For who? How long? For self / others? Externalities?

If Mark Zuckerberg creates a robot army and closed loop food producing system and clone installation that keeps him / his descendents alive till the heat death of the universe on an island in Hawai while 99.999999999999999999% of humans and animals die (some other billionaires on new Zealand etc etc) one could argue it's sustainable for said people but not very sustainable for "humanity"

There is no better way. Better way requires a big man / woman / it in the sky / your shoulder who supposedly knows.

You, me and most people on this forum are just the lucky ones (at least top 40% and most likely average top 3% financially ) who can imagine more than we can achieve in life and hence get philosophical from time to time...

Anyway I see you read / quote a lot of books so yeah recommend you the Derek Sivers book "how to live", he's much better than almost everyone at destillation and has the bonus of not having to sell.

Anyway as a tip: You can use sources / references but proof of authority / reference to authority (doctor this,..) Doesn't really add unless it's about a highly practical field. Can just add a source link at the bottom if you wanna reference his words but ideally the idea can stand by itself.

Paradigm2020··on We've made the world too complicated
Kindest advice: read Derek Sivers's "how to live". Think of it as a distilled wisdom and a choose your own adventure book which will give you perspective, options, frustration and probably become a "quake book".

Buy it from his own website so the money fully goes to a charity or from amazon because you cannot be bothered to make an account.

If you buy it at his website as a bonus you'll get the audiobook and if you wanna have 2h of full attention read/listening it will enhance the experiebve...

"Maybe our greatest gift to the world is to do as little as possible. To look at the birds, feel the wind and the water in our own hands, and ... nothing more. Eat when we are hungry, laugh when we are happy, cry when we are empty. And maybe that is the greatest gift to ourselves as well."

Who is this "the world"

Anyway keep up the writing.

Have a great day/evening/night

Paradigm2020··on We've made the world too complicated
Such a nature thing to say.

So what about Leonardo da Vinci and countless other "uomo universalis"... He was not an artist? And an engineer and...

I'm firmly in team nurture / choice and would only say that in our time it's harder to be an artist because to be an artist is to sacrifice a lot of other "great options"...

Paradigm2020··on We've made the world too complicated
He tries to grok it all at the same time which is impossible.

Free to learn anything we want but never possible to learn everything.

Paradigm2020··on We've made the world too complicated
There is no end.

The world is the way it is because of the desires that the powerful have chosen to pursue because they felt those were worthy of pursuit.

Everything is about entropy. There are those who obey it and those who fight it and yet all will fall because of it.

There is no written way the world should be / is best.

Life is change.

Just choose for yourself what is a good life but accept that there will always be trade offs

Paradigm2020··on Investors pile into clean energy as Iran war drives push for energy security
Well you have one reactor (probably...) coming up that will but it will rely on american capacity (your other great friend ;))

France being more relevant as largest % of nuclear as part of their energy mix ...

As I replied in the comment to the "french doesn't need", apparently either they care more about money and less about Ukraine or they absolutely couldn't but the numbers don't lie (if they were wrong the government would have challenge le monde asap ...)...

Also globally it's "about 6% of global uranium production, 20% of conversion capacity, 46% of enrichment capacity, and 10% of nuclear fuel fabrication capacity.

Next time I will use we ~ humanity to be more clear and avoid exceptions to the "big picture"

Have a great evening

Paradigm2020··on Houses are for living, not for speculation
Well state that you care about animal and nature wellfare right after your own welfare and before other humans welfare ? Or just add that to the original post would help clarity - would make everything comm wise easier.

(there's a 1% chance that I'm wrong here - please accept my apologies if you're a vegetarian, sub 30m²/person living in an apartment not using cars / ubers and intentionally living near public transport - or the closest equivalent available to you / your families financial status as of this moment, you are also donating at least 6% of your money to buying up farmland to convert it to pristine wilderness --- i am definitely not but my order is me - friends family - other humans - a more beautiful planet for the most of those other humans)

But yeah, personally I'd gladly make beef that are feed lot fed a lot more expensive with every house hold getting a check in advance for what would be a fair share of beef for all... Make it so only american beef is allowed (american farmers are happy) and make it a slightly diminishing amount every couple of years as farmers age out... It would be slow but the value of beef would massively increase and i think a lot ot poorer people (and myself) would put my money where my mouth is) You'd also have to ban the export/import of feed for cattle fattening and presto - 10% or land available for none extractive uses...

In the same way that delmonte closing canned peaches results in a vast monoculture being cut down and that right now with the right externalities / support "human focused demand" you could be setting up / buying some of it up and paying rent every year to keep it pristine ~ or a bigger a one off payment...

Anyway, again - noone states their values and most people think their values are duh and only dumbasses would disagree - hence why only conversation especially in a thread of a story tends to be rather difficult as everyone tries to defend their pov without stating it or dio mio asking the other person why (which would have been a better option from my part as well but again medium/message etc.

Looking forward to your reply and have a great day wherever you are. I'm off to zzz

Paradigm2020··on Houses are for living, not for speculation
The original turning the none used resource into a productive resource (your eg clearing land, irrigation etc etc) is productive.

Big land owners / PE / ... cornering all the available agricultural land / needed supply chain / economies of scale etc etc to extract more and more value of Scarce resource that has already been optimized is extractive.

The thing is that the word extractive makes it hard to have a good debate because pure extraction is rare (aka no need to add any extra labor to have the possesed "good" maintain or exceed its value vs inflation...

Personally in general I would prefer more usage of the word rent seeking (aka legally and finite resource captured market) and others.

As the current biggest problem in most countries in the world is housing and its cost for those who are renting and without any (realistic / statistical...) hope of ever entering the owners side that seems like something worth talking / voting for.

(I can get my beef from brazil / australia / ... But i can't get my land from there while living here.)

Most of the time it's hcol areas because the gentry decided to nimby those who came after them...

And the ones who managed anyway to break through that (because the gentry needed some cash and built some extra expensive houses/ condos to try and keep the riff raff at buy...) Felt they had worked hard and became nimby'ers themselves because housing is not a humane thing ... It's an investment that has to grow grow grow...

Paradigm2020··on Software engineering may no longer be a lifetime career
For the gilded class everything is available where everything is for sale.

For the not so gilded class that can get a job in a lcol area that allows them to actually own a home and have emergency savings the lack of cricket won't even appear on their mind (~also mark twain convincing others to pay him to paint.)

Re: stores that sell it well there's this thing called amazon.

Anyway. I feel like most people here are just afraid of going down the ladder in term of remuneration... A ladder that starting from the 70s got shittier for most...
