PantaloonFlames··on A case study in PDF forensics: The Epstein PDFs
And for sure the DOJ knows this, or can know it if they want.
PantaloonFlames··on The Great Unwind
> If you’re really interested in learning about the unwinding of the yen carry trade, there’s plenty of information from actual experts to read about,

Ok I’ll bite. Where ?

PantaloonFlames··on I miss thinking hard
I became an auto mechanic because I love machining heads, and dropping oil pans to inspect, and fitting crankshafts in just right, and checking fuel filters, and adjusting alternators.

If I wanted to work on electric power systems I would have become an electrician.

(The transition is happening.)

PantaloonFlames··on The lost art of XML
XSD was (is) not so easy to adopt, but I don't agree that it's a monstrosity.

Schema are complicated. XSD is a response to that reality.

The XML ecosystem is messy. But people don't need to adopt everything. Ignore Relax-NG, ignore DTD, use namespaces sparingly, adopt conventions around NOT using attributes. It generally works quite well.

It's a challenge to get comfortable with XSD but once that happens, it's not a monstrosity. Similarly, XSLT. It requires a different way of thinking, and once you get that, you're productive.

PantaloonFlames··on Agent Skills
For one thing, it’s a text file and not a server. That makes it simpler.

PantaloonFlames··on Claude Code is suddenly everywhere inside Microsoft
yes, similar.
PantaloonFlames··on Claude Code is suddenly everywhere inside Microsoft
I've had the exact opposite experience. After including in my prompt "don't write any code yet" (or similar brief phrase), Gemini responds without writing code.

Using Gemini 2.5 or 3, flash.

PantaloonFlames··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
The US doesn’t need large reserves of oil. The US is an energy exporter. The country is limiting investment in solar and wind, ON PURPOSE.

This is crony capitalism. This is Trump shoring up support from oil companies.

Mr Trump has purposefully depressed the value of non-petroleum energy sources in the US, which props up the value of US oil Producers and processors.

And now, This is a territory takeover by a mafia don, so he can hand favors to other rich guys. Maduro wasn’t doing the deal Trump wanted, so this is what Trump did.

If solar and wind were thriving in the US (as they could be!) then this new oil territory would be worth less. That’s why Trump hates wind. He cannot convert clean energy into a benefit for himself.

It’s not about drugs or fentanyl. It’s not about democracy or corrupt elections in VZ.

PantaloonFlames··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
People, not only patrons of HN, like simple answers.

They look at clouds and see the patterns they want to see.

It turns out things are usually more complicated than that.

PantaloonFlames··on Google is dead. Where do we go now?
Do you know how Google makes money?
PantaloonFlames··on How uv got so fast
I would be able to absorb your perspective better if it were structured as a bulleted list, with SUMMARY STRINGS IN BOLD for each bullet. And if you had used the word "Crucially" at least once.
PantaloonFlames··on How uv got so fast
That's true. Probably not compiling and using HTTP Range made a big difference, but we don't know, do we? Quantifying these differences, rather than just listing them, would make the post much more valuable.
PantaloonFlames··on OpenAI declares 'code red' as Google catches up in AI race
At first I read “enormous longterm commitments” as customers committing to OpenAI. But you are saying it’s the reverse.
PantaloonFlames··on OpenAI declares 'code red' as Google catches up in AI race
You are mostly missing the point. You’re saying you get value out of what OpenAI is offering you. Thats not at issue here.

The question is, does OpenAI get value out of the exchange?

You touched on it ever so briefly: “as long as inference is not done at a loss”. That is it, isn’t it? Or more generally, As long as OpenAI is making money . But they are not.

There’s the rub.

It’s not only about whether you think giving them your money is a good exchange. It needs to be a good exchange for both sides, for the business to be viable.

PantaloonFlames··on Why I stopped using JSON for my APIs
DCE STILL WORKS?

Where!??

PantaloonFlames··on Why I stopped using JSON for my APIs
Yes to all of this.

Also the “us” is ever-changing in a large enough system. There are always people joining and leaving the team. Always, many people are approximately new, and JSON lets them discover more easily.

PantaloonFlames··on Why I stopped using JSON for my APIs
Yes. Proto makes sense when the request rate is much higher and the network is constrained.

Otherwise, json is sufficient.

PantaloonFlames··on Garry Tan says MCP "barely works" today
If TOOL_X needs $DATA and that data is not available in context, nor from other tools, then the LLM will determine that it cannot use or invoke TOOL_X. It won't try.

About the TOOL_Z and TOOL_W scenario. It sounds like you're asking about the concept of a distributed unit-of-work which is not considered by MCP.

PantaloonFlames··on Claude Advanced Tool Use
Or, why not let the LLM write the tool and give it to the agent? Taking it one step further the tool could be completely ephemeral - it could have a lifetime of exactly one chat conversation.

tl;dr AI-powered assistants can already use command line tools.

PantaloonFlames··on Adk-go: code-first Go toolkit for building, evaluating, and deploying AI agents
100%, I don’t really get the justification for golang, today. But. Looking forward we can imagine a world of agents, agents everywhere , including embedded into systems that are built in go. So I guess it would be more suitable for that.
PantaloonFlames··on Adk-go: code-first Go toolkit for building, evaluating, and deploying AI agents
This is a golang variant of the already released “agent development kit” in Java and python.

And… none of them are Gemini specific. You can use them with any model you like, including Gemini.

I’m not an expert but comparing it to langgraph, it’s more opinionated , less flexible. But, easier to get started for basic agent apps.

Worth a spin.

PantaloonFlames··on Metabolic and cellular differences between sedentary and active individuals
The meaning of the words “Max effort” doesn’t change or vary.

It’s just that some people have a max that is lower than others, or at some points in your life your effort is lower than at others, as dictated by physical, mental, or psychological capacity for that person at that moment.

For example a normally sedentary person might find it mentally and psychologically uncomfortable to exercise strenuously. That doesn’t mean they’re not putting forth max effort.

Max effort means max effort.

PantaloonFlames··on Metabolic and cellular differences between sedentary and active individuals
You are neglecting the optimizer approach of working while walking; etc. Also, hygiene during the commute - just shave and brush your teeth on the bus. And sleeping while bathing is a real time saver.
PantaloonFlames··on Metabolic and cellular differences between sedentary and active individuals
I took the comment as sarcasm.

PantaloonFlames··on Analyzing the Performance of WebAssembly vs. Native Code
45% slower means..?

Suppose native code takes 2 units of time to execute.

“45% slower” is???

Would it be 45% _more time?_

What would “45% _faster_” mean?

PantaloonFlames··on I took all my projects off the cloud, saving thousands of dollars
+1 words matter

Clarity of expression is a superpower

I don’t feel it’s pedantic at all.

PantaloonFlames··on Tinkering is a way to acquire good taste
> And what I mean by taste here is simply the honed ability to distinguish mediocrity from excellence. This will be highly subjective, …

It is not about aesthetics , from my reading. You brought that connotation into the conversation.
