Paianni··on Europe bets once again on RISC-V for supercomputing
I discovered recently that a Raspberry Pi 5 would be faster than both my sister's and parents' PCs. Just a shame that all cheap ARM boards need proprietary kernels.
Paianni··on Why most countries are struggling to shut down 2G
I used to carry a Nokia 6310i with a new battery and it couldn't make it to a month without a charge. Maybe 2 weeks. My 235 4G can last about a week on standby. I'm not sure what the expectation is in the sort of places you're referring to, but I know some economically poorer regions are investing in 4G masts, like India thanks to Jio phones.
Paianni··on Why most countries are struggling to shut down 2G
I suspect that would be offset by efficiency gains on the infrastructure side.

And thanks to smartphones, people are used to charging their phone every night, so it doesn't feel like a hindrance like it used to.

Incidentally, 3G capabilities would only be used when the phone's searching for networks or connected to a 3G network (I think), which are becoming very rare nowadays.

Paianni··on UEFI-Only Support for AMD Radeon RX 9000 Series Graphics and Later
The main one, and the one I'm using now, has a Radeon Pro WX 5100 which is a Polaris card from about 8 years ago.
Paianni··on UEFI-Only Support for AMD Radeon RX 9000 Series Graphics and Later
All of my PCs except an old MacBook Pro have a BIOS, not UEFI.

Two are from 2010, one from 2008, one from 1996.

Paianni··on Windows NT for GameCube/Wii
There were native builds of Word and Excel for Alpha that came with 4.2 and 97, but nothing else non-x86 except for the 'pocket' versions that came with Windows CE.
Paianni··on Microsoft deletes official Windows 11 CPU/TPM bypass for unsupported PCs
You would probably like Gnumeric, though that project is very Unix-specific.
Paianni··on Windows 11 – There's still nothing worth my time
Neither TPM 2.0 or 1.2 is required for a Server 2025 install.

Microsoft could easily disable the restriction is they wanted to.

Paianni··on Google Search requires JavaScript as of today (except Lynx at least)
For a while it seemed touch and go but this rule seems to be thoroughly enforced now except for a 'whitelist' of browsers that does not include Firefox, Chromium or Netsurf.
Paianni··on Firefox releases tab groups for nightly
Opera 11 (Dec 2010) had 'tab stacking'.
Paianni··on Nokia 5110 – Back from the Dead (2022)
I have a 235 4G and I'd say the firmware is 'quirky' but not particularly buggy in the five months I've had it.
Paianni··on A common urban intersection in the Netherlands (2018)
Dual carriageways are ok for cycling when the AADT for a particular road is below about 30k. Above that, cyclists would be an impediment to traffic flow as a following motorist would be waiting a long time for a safe gap in the second lane to overtake, especially when the speed difference is above 100%.
Paianni··on School is Not Enough: Learning is a consequence of doing (2021)
> Maybe if you're stuck in a classroom with unmotivated people, or your classmates are much slower than you, or the class is huge and your teacher doesn't give a shit about teaching. But in the absence of a severe case of some incidental problem like that, I've found the opposite to be true.

For me it was the noise. Also, being in a UK 'comprehensive' (state school) meant mixing with people from families with varying work ethics and it pained me trying to understand why other kids motivations, even other adults' motivations, were often very different to mine and what I had been brought up with at home.

Paianni··on Arm is canceling Qualcomm's chip design license
Qualcomm may have the market but Apple has the profit.
Paianni··on Cross-Process Spectre Exploitation
I think everything from Pentium Pro (except Bonnell-based Atom), AMD K5, Cyrix 6x86 and VIA Nano onwards is vulnerable.
Paianni··on Could we build a computer designed to last at least fifty years? (2021)
Most GPUs and iGPUs have had H.264 decoders for over 15 years.

In theory any computer with a PCI slot can play 1080p with no frame drops.

Paianni··on The Collapse of Self-Worth in the Digital Age
Maybe this varies by location but at least in the UK, adults can usually leave the grounds of their place of work during a lunch break. Not true for school kids. And the difference in population density between schools and offices is usually stark.
Paianni··on Microsoft begins cracking down on people dodging Windows 11 system requirements
They still provide directions on downgrading the TPM check from 2.0 to 1.2: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/ways-to-install-...
Paianni··on Microsoft technical breakdown of CrowdStrike incident
All business are built on relationships, technical competency can but doesn't have to be a means to that end.
Paianni··on Dear Europe, please wake up
Teaching English will just reinforce Anglo-American hegemony.
Paianni··on SiFive Premier P550 RISC-V development board
If the eMMC failed then the board would become a brick until the associated chips were desoldered and replaced.
Paianni··on SiFive Premier P550 RISC-V development board
eMMC makes this a hard pass for me.
Paianni··on Proton Mail says Outlook for Windows is Microsoft's new data collection service
nPOPuk?
Paianni··on Supermium – Chromium fork for Win 2003/XP and newer
Maybe offline web development on old, perhaps proprietary, hardware platforms? Security and the risks of running untrusted code wouldn't matter so much.
Paianni··on Walmart buying TV-brand Vizio for its ad-fueling customer data
Maybe open it up and disconnect the antennas?
Paianni··on Nokia made too many phones
The figures past 2015 don't seem to include basic phones.
Paianni··on Nokia made too many phones
S60 5th edition was a disaster for Symbian's and Nokia's reputation, especially the N97 incarnation. Its main issue was a lack of GPU acceleration for the GUI which wasn't really resolved until the Belle era, by which point it was far too late to resurrect.
Paianni··on Intel's Humbling
If they can get Horse Creek out the door, I'm interested, if not, I'm not.
Paianni··on New Renderers for GTK
To be fair, the secondary technologies available to support the preferred model now are far more advanced than what Quartz Extreme (in macOS) and DWM (in Win. Vista) had to use, and there's no longer a need to provide backward compatibility with software rendering.
Paianni··on Only 90s Web Developers Remember This (2014)
You mean Basic HTTP Authentication? I wouldn't say Chrome's dialog looks 'ugly'.
