Paianni··on Asus Announces October Availability of ProArt Display 8K PA32KCX
The Asus PA27JCV is rather less than $2k...
Paianni··on SailfishOS: A Linux-based European alternative to dominant mobile OSes
After the tablet fiasco in 2015 they've never been able to afford to staff their OS properly; the web browser engine still lags behind Firefox by a long way (using Gecko 91 currently).
Paianni··on China has added forest the size of Texas since 1990
The scenarios were calculated based on hypothetical 'policies' of a society and the availability of natural resources. The scenario (from the 2004 book) we are tracking most closely is no.2, i.e 'business as usual' but with twice as much resources as was assumed in the 70s.
Paianni··on YouTube is taking down videos on performing nonstandard Windows 11 installs
LibreOffice is ok for reading and making minor changes to existing files but I haven't used Writer or Calc for anything new in years. LaTeX and Gnumeric are my tools of choice.
Paianni··on Sony PlayStation 2 fixing frenzy
The Transcend consumer cards are/were generally 'hybrids' - they would work in IDE mode if connected to such an interface.
Paianni··on Free software hasn't won
The reality is that since the invention of ICs, electronic devices have become 'black-boxes' that the vast majority of people can't hope to understand the entire workings of. Free software licenses were never going to change that.
Paianni··on Britain to introduce compulsory digital ID for workers
Be careful not to mix local customs and Sharia, very often they don't line up in Muslim-majority countries.
Paianni··on Raspberry Pi 500+
If they implement DisplayPort (or USB-C DP Alt Mode), I'm in.
Paianni··on XNEdit – fast and classic X11 text editor
This is trying to fill the gap between console Unicode editors (e.g mined) and the 'full-fat' editors typically built around GTK or Qt. I'm not too keen they decided to mess around with the Motif File selection dialog to make it more 'Nautilus-like'.
Paianni··on America Surrenders in the Global Information Wars
As if your government ever had genuine ideals other than profit...
Paianni··on It is worth it to buy the fast CPU
Nothing older than Nehalem and Bulldozer got microcode mitigations for Spectre, so I'd say running a C2D online would be a liability by now.
Paianni··on Building a computer in the 90s (2019)

Paianni··on Pixel 10 Phones
I hope they stop superglueing the batteries inside the phones.
Paianni··on OpenBSD is so fast, I had to modify the program slightly to measure itself
fvwm and cwm are window managers, definitely not DEs.
Paianni··on Debian 13 “Trixie”
My point is that small button GUIs should be a choice for the people who want to put up with them, not something that's pushed for universal use.
Paianni··on Debian 13 “Trixie”
No
Paianni··on Debian 13 “Trixie”
They may not personally choose Devuan or GNOME but they might end up using them because an administrator chose them.
Paianni··on Debian 13 “Trixie”
I suppose 'power-users' can put up with 'small-button' GUIs but I do think a general purpose GUI needs to be easy to use for people who aren't used to controlling mice and keyboards all the time.
Paianni··on Debian 13 “Trixie”
I don't like GNOME's engineering or license, but as far as the UI and design are concerned I don't think anyone has topped it (minus the hot corner I guess).
Paianni··on Debian 13 “Trixie”
The Devuan version may end up being the last that GNOME will run on...
Paianni··on Debian switches to 64-bit time for everything
Just in time to drop 32-bit x86.
Paianni··on The End of Windows 10: a toolkit for community repair groups
Wasn't this patched out about 18 months ago?
Paianni··on KiCad and Wayland Support
At least some of them were people trying to hack X.Org to deliver an 'iPhone-like' experience on Nokia Maemo/MeeGo devices. The Jolla phone ended up being the first consumer device to ship with Wayland afaik.
Paianni··on Windows 10 EOL
Pretty much all CPUs from Bulldozer and Sandy Bridge onwards got microcode mitigations through 2018 and 2019. Just about everything older is definitely obsolete from an efficiency standpoint.
Paianni··on Apple has announced its final version of macOS for Intel
That means people who bought an Intel-based Mac Pro in 2023 will only have gotten security updates for five years after purchase. Wow.
Paianni··on The world could run on older hardware if software optimization was a priority
So Metal and DirectX 12 capable GPUs are already hard requirements for their respective platforms, and I anticipate that Wayland compositors will start depending on Vulkan eventually.

That will make pre-Broadwell laptops generally obsolete and there aren't many AMD laptops of that era that are worth saving.

Servers don't need a graphical environment, but the inefficiencies of older hardware are much more acute in this context compared to personal computing, where the full capabilities of the hardware are rarely exploited.

Paianni··on Ask HN: How do you talk about past jobs you regret in interviews?
If nothing else, spin it as 'experience'.
Paianni··on The dark side of the Moomins
Finns (or at least, the successors to tribes that assimilated into the modern-day Finnish nation) were exposed to Christianity later than most of Europe. Pre-Christian religions generally held a higher regard for relationships with nature, that might explain what you're getting at.
Paianni··on US tells government employees to report on one another for "anti-Christian bias"
Well, except for natives (until 1978).
Paianni··on Lynx is the oldest web browser still being maintained
That landing page seems unmaintained, I think this is the main home page: https://lynx.invisible-island.net/
