PLenz··on Uploading Pirated Books via BitTorrent Qualifies as Fair Use, Meta Argues
This is the real reason the ultra rich are buying media companies. They expect the existing copyright laws to prevail in court and to either make significant revenue licensing IP for training or to take large stakes in AI companies in return for the IP.

Only data is a moat, not algos, not compute.

PLenz··on Google restricting Google AI Pro/Ultra subscribers for using OpenClaw
Of course they don't like it. CLAW makes the platform fungible and once that happens the magic by which their insane multiples of values exist bursts.
PLenz··on Google Public CA is down
Eight hour estimated restoration time!
PLenz··on AI fatigue is real and nobody talks about it
I only use the free tiers of any particular app. It forces you to really think about you want the tool to do as opposed to treating it as the 'easy' button.
PLenz··on CIA to Sunset the World Factbook
There's nothing at all wrong with Wikipedia but it needs sources to cite since it doesn't allow original research and the World Factbook is an important one.
PLenz··on Why DuckDB is my first choice for data processing
Duckdb is wonderful. I have several multi-TB pipelines that I moved over from spark and dask. It's so much easier to think in terms of knew machine that gets it's resources used efficiently instead of distributed/cloud processes. It even let me take some big data things back to on-prem from aws.
PLenz··on “Food JPEGs” in Super Smash Bros. and Kirby Air Riders
This kinda of article is exactly what the internet was made for. More of this, less AI
PLenz··on 62 years in the making: NYC's newest water tunnel nears the finish line
Probably never. The tunnels cost a lot to build but, once built run almost for free - they're powered by gravity and will keep running for close to a century before major maintained is needed.
PLenz··on Microsoft has a problem: lack of demand for its AI products
It's a generalization problem. We can train LLMs that 'know' a lot of stuff in the global sense but the tasks that are interesting to people require the LLM to know a lot about you and your world in a very specific sense. The technical problem is that it's all corner cases and that's impossible to scale right now. No amount of context window is going to get you there either.
PLenz··on Perl's decline was cultural
I'm really, really confused by the typescript overtaking python comment, they're not really tackling the same domain of problems, right?
PLenz··on Cloudflare Down Again – and DownDetector Is Also Down
The open question is if there is a sufficient number of down detectors where the system becomes turing complete
PLenz··on Nursing excluded as 'professional' degree by Department of Education
Because if there us a nursing shortage there is opportunity to 'supplement' existing nurses with AI and thus transfer more wealth to the very richest among us
PLenz··on The Cities Skylines Paradox: how the sequel stumbled
Kitten Space Agency is looking like it will be the KSP2 we deserved but didn't get
PLenz··on FBI tries to unmask owner of archive.is

PLenz··on Zohran Mamdani wins the New York mayoral race
With 90% reporting Mamdami's lead is larger then Sliwa + Cuomo. Mandami won, not Cuomo and Sliwa lost.
PLenz··on New OSM file format: 30% smaller than PBF, 5x faster to import
Does it work with osmium?
PLenz··on United MAX Hit by Falling Object at 36,000 Feet
But it has to be _exactly_ a million to one
PLenz··on That Secret Service SIM farm story is bogus
I mean yeah, it was kinda obvious that they busted an ad fraud sim farm but needed to pad that resume for the bosses. There's no glory in "just" fighting fraud right now.
PLenz··on Zip Code Map of the United States
The military postal code system is seperate from the US post office's zip code system. Often (and easily!) conflated but actually operating in parallel. Made even more confusing because many U.S. based entities can be reached in both systems.
PLenz··on Zip Code Map of the United States
Sometimes they're entire non geographic entities like the IRS
PLenz··on Why haven't local-first apps become popular?
Harder to rent-seek with non-saas software
PLenz··on The Bitter Lesson Is Misunderstood
I've worked in 2 of those domains (I was a geographer at a web advertising company) and let me tell you, the data is only slightly better than the median industry and in the case of the geodata from apps I'd say it's far, far, far worse.
PLenz··on Cops say criminals use a Google Pixel with GrapheneOS – I say that's freedom
Jersey is another term for knitwear in English
PLenz··on Tram Trains
Time to reinvent the Interurban https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interurban
PLenz··on Work Life balance slows careers
Repeating what working women have been saying for decades
PLenz··on FOSS4G Europe 2025 live streaming [video]
LLMs are getting better at spatial but still are quite bad at geospatial
PLenz··on FP8 is ~100 tflops faster when the kernel name has "cutlass" in it
The Volkswagon emissions testing model
PLenz··on Coventry Very Light Rail
Everything old is new again: The Light Railways Act of 1896 also propsed rail lines built to less then mainline standards (often narrow gauge) to get transport links to otherwise unconnected locations. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_Railways_Act_1896 comment edited because I fat finger editing the submit button
PLenz··on Merlin Bird ID
My favorite part of the app is the spectrogram - I'm not sure exactly why but seeing the songs has made learning which bird goes with which song so much easier.

Also a shout out here to Bird Song Hero: https://academy.allaboutbirds.org/bird-song-hero/

PLenz··on Car companies are in a billion-dollar software war
This is the feature I dislike most about my outback. Some systems just need buttons so you can operate without looking
