P-Nuts··on Covid Test Data Breach: 1.3M Patient Records Exposed Online
Is my passport information really that precious? It doesn’t contain much that isn’t on my birth certificate, apart from my ugly mug. And quite literally anyone can get an officially certified copy of my birth certificate, because that’s a matter of public record.
P-Nuts··on So you think you know C? (2016)
To get 2, there are (at least) a couple of ways it can happen, we can do i=0,i++ and get LHS=0, now i=1,++i and get RHS=2. Or we can do i=0,++i and get RHS=1, then i=1,i++ and get LHS=1.

However we’re also allowed to do something like this: i=0, a=i, b=i, b=b+1, RHS=b (RHS=1), LHS=a (LHS=0), a=a+1, i=a, i=b.

Probably quite a lot of other things are allowed to happen. Usual disclaimer that a standard-compliant compiler is allowed to vaporise your cat etc as part of UB.

The thing to Google is “sequence points”.

« Le TRR fonctionna d'abord à la vitesse de 11 km/h (3 m/s), mais en raison de fréquentes chutes de voyageurs et de divers accidents, la vitesse fut réduite à 9 km/h (2,5 m/s) »

From your Wikipedia page, it says it initially went at 11 km/h but was reduced to 9 km/h because of “frequent falls of passengers and various accidents”.

A bit like JabRef then? That was what I was using when was in academia but that was 15-20 years ago.
P-Nuts··on Clang now makes binaries an original Pi B+ can't run
It’s explicitly stated: “I figured, okay, maybe it's doing some optimization because it was built on the 4B. So, I went and did a build on the B+ natively. It also broke.”

So she was originally compiling on a newer RPi, but immediately switched to compiling on the same one that couldn’t run it. And I believe the actual system images for RPi are built to support all models (there aren’t separate downloads for different models unless you want 64-bit) so it’s not crazy to think that everything would work building on a newer model.

This is just a packaging defect, Clang/LLVM isn’t being configured correctly by RPiOS (Raspbian).

P-Nuts··on Chrome pushes forward with plans to limit ad blockers in the future
Not Firefox and Chrome extensions though, only a much more limited selection

It doesn’t support extensions though. I think only Orion supports extensions on iPhone.
P-Nuts··on We Automated Bullshit
Wikipedia makes a reasonable attempt to cite its references. If ChatGPT states something it doesn’t give any indication where it’s from. Could be from a textbook or a reputable website. Could be from someone shitposting on Twitter. Then you’re back to Googling to find out which.
P-Nuts··on Ask HN: Has anyone gotten complete, permanent relief from tinnitus?
My tinnitus, that my second covid infection gave me, is outside my current hearing frequency range.
P-Nuts··on What every software developer must know about Unicode in 2023
You can type ① with the UniChar keyboard app on iOS. It at least claims it doesn’t transmit information. As it’s only useful for special characters I don’t worry because I can’t use it for normal typing anyway.

Anime isn’t written in kanji in Japanese because it’s a loanword, and loanwords are written in katakana.
P-Nuts··on So You Think You Know C? (2020) [pdf]
I have debugged a problem that was due to a left shift of 1ULL by 64 (in a routine that tried to set the lowest n bits by shifting 1 left and subtracting by 1). I needed to read the Intel docs to find out what actually happens to work out how badly we’d corrupted the customer data and how to write a fix to unmangle it.

What Intel processors do is ignore the upper bits of the shift quantity, so it’s effectively (1ULL << (x % 64)) - 1, therefore the function that should have set all ones for x=64 actually set all zeros.

The compiler isn’t strictly required by the standard to emit a syntax error when given an invalid program.

I knew they were all UB except the integer promotion one. Ah well, at least I have -Wconversion turned on to save me from myself on that one.

I want the opposite! I know which language I’m typing but my phone still randomly decides I’ve written thé (French for tea) instead of the.
P-Nuts··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
My Kindle Oasis and my Bose QC35 are my next most often charged things after my iPhone, and they’re both micro USB and only three years old. The only USB-C device I own is a kitchen scale. I have more mini USB and full-size USB-B things!
P-Nuts··on UK air traffic control meltdown
You don’t need a complete diagnosis if you can spit out enough debug info that says, “oops shat the bed while working with this flight plan”, then the support people can remove the one that’s causing you to fail, restart the system, and tell ATC to route that one manually.

P-Nuts··on How to do the thing you've been avoiding
I think the official language authorities are fighting a losing battle on that one!

Non, je ne l’ai pas encore essayé. Je suppose que ça devrait être ma prochaine étape, mais je n’aime pas parler en visio.

Pour l’instant, je suis content de lire des livres et d’écouter des podcasts.

P-Nuts··on How to do the thing you've been avoiding
Probably “c’est dommage” would be more idiomatic for “it’s too bad”.

I got into relearning French during the pandemic. I did learn it at school (age 11-16) but that was well over 20 years ago.
