OvidNaso··on Show HN: No YC interview, but here's my application
I like how a few people have 'forked' your application on PenFlip. Would be lovely if someone made a few modifications and got accepted.

Really like PenFlip btw. Keep up the good work.

OvidNaso··on Features Firefox should implement to weaken Facebook's stranglehold of the web
I do wonder, in the early days of Chrome, how many people downloaded Firefox, did their first search with the default search engine, then downloaded Chrome.
OvidNaso··on MacKenzie Bezos Writes Amazon Review for Jeff Bezos Biography
But Mrs. Bezos mentions his use of all those thinking verbs he ascribes to Jeff. I was reminded yesterday of writing advice by Chuck Paluchink (thanks Reddit) to never use these "thought" verbs and instead to show. This is even more important for non-fiction.

Presumably Mr. Stone had evidence and reason to put Bezos's mind in a certain frame from circumstance, action, or interviews and if he did, he should have laid out that evidence to show us his probably mental state and not simply told us.

OvidNaso··on MacKenzie Bezos Writes Amazon Review for Jeff Bezos Biography
This was posted yesterday on Reddit in writing tips. It's advice from Chuck Palahniuk (author of Fight Club) to never use 'thinking' verbs wrt your characters. It's for fiction, but I think it is every better applied for non-fiction. Mr. Stone should have a look at it.

OvidNaso··on All around the world, labour is losing out to capital
Well, we've already had glimpses of this, with varying degrees of disruptions. CGI generated still pictures don't seem to have any real success except in some very niche communities. Video games are certainly successful with it although still dominated by human level design. Partially generated photo effects and CGI are enormously popular, but suffer much blow back and derision from many.
OvidNaso··on Workplace Equality Is Good for Business
You'd be setting up a straw man that presumably you don't want with this caveat. There is already some evidence that sexual orientation is not fully genetic in all cases. The real position, that I take, is who cares if it's genetic. 'Genetcism' has become the modern day naturalism, and like it's fore barer gives no insight to morality.
OvidNaso··on No Morsel Too Minuscule for All-Consuming N.S.A.
*To put it differently: are you better off dead or with the NSA?

To put some perspective on terrorism. A 9/11 size event would have to occur every 6 weeks to approach the causality rate from automobile accidents.

OvidNaso··on The BadBIOS Analysis is Wrong
This is way out of my league and maybe not relevant at all, but the Demoscene has forever changed how much I think about what can be accomplished with tiny amount of code.

OvidNaso··on "BadBIOS" features explained
As the article states, it is a holdover term from a time they were Read only.
OvidNaso··on "BadBIOS" features explained
And claiming that a well respected long term reliable researcher is crazy or suddenly a paranoid schizophrenic after sharing a few preliminary findings, is indeed extraordinary.
OvidNaso··on It’s time for Silicon Valley to ask: Is it worth it?
Not one of those reasons, except the last, has anything to do with a vast majority of the revelations about what the NSA is doing that has people up in arms.

And the only legitimate argument about protecting against terrorism, people are starting to realize that the threat is miniscule and is amplified due to cognitive interpretations of data.

OvidNaso··on Evidence that dendrites actively process information in the brain
And this is, somewhat ironically, very bad news for Mr. Kurzweil.
OvidNaso··on Show HN: Gmelius – No Ads and Better User Interface for Gmail
You're using a lot of strong language concerning the morality of user action on service revenue, while ignoring your apparent apathy toward the financial benefit of your advertisers. This seems to happen quite often. When the service isn't getting paid because of blocked ads, the users are 'leeches' and 'entitled', but when the advertisers aren't by the avoiders there is no equivalent outrage.
OvidNaso··on The Aha Moments That Made Y Combinator Possible
What are your feelings about this? What would your 30 year old self have thought?
OvidNaso··on Firefox 25 is released
Using an older phone, Firefox is unusably slow and Chrome is not even available.

OvidNaso··on The Anti-Addiction Pill That's Big Business For Drug Dealers
Naturally occurring means nothing. Opiates are naturally occurring too.
OvidNaso··on How to be a Programmer: A Short, Comprehensive, and Personal Summary (2002)
Almost every human is capable of speech. We have a built in interpreter that can recognize and produce an infinite amount of understandable sentences.

By your logic. Everyone who can speak is Shakespeare.

OvidNaso··on Ask HN: What are you working on and why is it cool?
This is a really great idea. Just some feedback: The product photos, on my screen, look pretty low quality. I imagine this is because they are being scaled to the size of the browser. It also makes it a little hard to use as the photo takes the entire screen and requires scrolling for the information and site navigation.
OvidNaso··on Actionable Ways To Get Startup Ideas
This also happens in the drug trade.

But I don't think we can attribute it to finance domain knowledge.

OvidNaso··on FBI Says It's Seized $28.5 Million in Bitcoins From Ross Ulbricht
We also know that they waited until he entered some keys on his laptop before they seized him. The likelihood it was these keys is probably low, but still should be considered.

OvidNaso··on Pixelmator 3.0
I recently stumbled on Chasys Draw Artist. It's pretty amazing coming from one person. Many more features over Paint.net, yet startup time is about the same as compared to Gimp.

OvidNaso··on D-Wave Computer's Solution Raises More Questions
If the D-Wave is actually using quantum annealing for it's algorithms, how is it playing "fake it till we make it" simply by not having optimized its output to be currently faster than classical systems? I think it's pretty easy to see how the government and private institutions that are purchasing D-Wave Two's (universities and research divisions) see them as potentially great tools separate from their processing output. Business people are a separate entity and I would be surprised, and doubtful of their acumen, if any were actually purchasing any.

If they turn out to be quantum in origin, I think you are way off base in this prediction.

OvidNaso··on Rat Park experiment upturns conventional wisdom about addiction
This has actually been pretty standard thinking in addiction medicine for a long time. 12 step programs were developed by thinking as addiction as a 'spiritual' affection. Many AA'isms reflect this: "I don't have a alcohol problem. I have a spiritual problem and drugs and alcohol were the solution." etc.
OvidNaso··on SecureDrop
I don't know the answer, but don't forget that Schneier got his initial fame from writing Applied Cryptography.
