OptionOfT··on GLP-1s are being linked to fewer serious infections, including TB
Yes.

I hike 5 miles a day, I ate super-healthy (no ultra-processed foods, cook at home every day etc), only drink water, coffee & tea. Actually rarely eat stuff which has added sugar on the package, and avoid foods that have > 5 ingredients (more means it's too processed for me). I bake my own bread (sourdough, salt, flour, water, maybe home-grown japalenos).

And yet, I kept on gaining weight...

My problem is don't get the signal that I'm full fast enough. I have tried _everything_. Drink 2 glasses of water, fibers, eat slower, smaller plates, dietician, track calories.

They work in isolation, but I always end up hungry. Compare it to alcohol. The desire to drink. The solution there is easy. No more alcohol, and that works for most people.

With food? Can't completely abstain...

Went on GLP-1, worked great. Because of hip surgery had to stop for a while, and the weight just came back, because naturally, you revert to your old eating habits, as you chase the signal of satiation.

Now back on them and I'll be on it until the day I die. I pay $450 a month for now because insurance doesn't think I am fat enough now (I'm not). They expect me to go back to my overweight weight..., and even then, acceptance is not guaranteed.

In terms of risks: If I don't take it I'll wear out my knees sooner (hips were related to genetics, not weight). If I don't take it I need 1h more / sleep every night, I have sleep apnea, higher blood pressure, higher cholesterol (doesn't mater how healthy EVOO is, if you eat a huge salad you'll eat a lot of oil).

It's not a risk of GLP-1 against nothing. It's GLP-1 risks vs heart-disease/etc.

At least with GLP-1 I get to live now.

OptionOfT··on Introducing Ad Blocker for Firefox on iOS
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/block-ads-firefox-ios#w...

> Does ad blocking affect search engine ads? > No. Ads shown on search engine results pages are not blocked.

A lot of the search results on top of Google are there to scam you, providing phone numbers for pass through services that charge $ for it, like flight cancellation:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Scams/comments/1p6h81i/beware_fake_...

So this omission should absolutely be addressed, but they probably cannot because of the Google Search contract...

OptionOfT··on Debugging my new network, when 10 Gigabit Ethernet Runs at 300 Megabits
Playstation's networking capabilities are an absolute mess.

In anticipation for GTA6 I actually bought a PS5 Pro 2 weeks ago. I had to create a separate IPv4-only network because it would not complete the user-sign-up on the device on my IPv4/IPv6 network.

Absolutely insane.

OptionOfT··on Verschlimmbesserung: The Word Your Software Updates Need
I usually relate this to people chasing good reviews at work. Maintaining a system and keeping it bug-free doesn't get people promoted.

Doing something large, inventing a bunch of metrics, and showing that you improve on those metrics does.

OptionOfT··on Don't use musl if you care about performance
Are there other options if I want to ship a 'FROM scratch' image with just a single Rust executable, and everything compiled in?

That to me is the main driver for MUSL.

OptionOfT··on Saving 100 terabytes of memory by optimizing 1.1.1.1's DNS cache
> we store the records as a single Box<[u8]> containing each record encoded as a 2-byte length prefix followed by its raw bytes.

Interestingly this is exactly how netlink works-ish: https://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/focal/man3/netlink.3.ht...

You start, get the type & length, and then that is how many bytes you read.

Some issues with that when you deserialize, from a raw stream in to `[u8; 4096]` buffer, the alignment is only guaranteed to be on 1 byte, not 4 bytes.

In practice it is 4 bytes, but if you run those tests with Miri, you'll get yelled at. So the fix there is to declare the buffer with a type that mandates the alignment of the largest type that you're going to be deserializing.

So then you start your buffer as follows: `[u32; 1024]`, and with `slice::from_raw_parts` you get to turn that into `[u8; 4096]` with the expected alignment.

As an exercise I wrote a streaming parser for netlink, the current existing package serializes everything, all at once.

OptionOfT··on Air Conditioning Is Not a Luxury, It Is a Necessity
The problem with shared is the issue of shared cost. How do you determine how much a user consumes?

There is also the issue of upgrading the shared infrastructure. Because of the size it's a lot more expensive to replace, so that is postponed for much longer because now everybody needs to pitch in.

OptionOfT··on Tracking Costco gas prices
Sadly 2 parts of Arizona use CA gas.

This means a couple of things: those places don't have 93, and the mileage you get out of a gallon is less.

I wish the government would ban 2 stroke engines (like leaf-blowers), which would have a much larger effect on air quality, vs using CA's oxygenated gas.

Those places, are they top tier?
OptionOfT··on How credit card rewards became a $9.2B wealth transfer
> At one time, credit card companies forced vendors to charge the same, whether cash or credit, but that seems to have fallen by the wayside.

I miss that. I really dislike that it is allowed to charge extra for a credit card. It shows that the company doesn't understand the cost of cash.

OptionOfT··on How credit card rewards became a $9.2B wealth transfer
Problem with a debit card is that if something goes wrong (product broken, or worse, debit card skimmed) it's my debit card, and thus my money.

Credit card? I file a charge-back which is a forcing mechanism for the vendor. Credit card skimmed? I get a new one, and I don't need to wait for my $ to be re-imbursed.

OptionOfT··on How credit card rewards became a $9.2B wealth transfer
In Belgium it is common knowledge that cash-only places don't report everything to the feds.

For the same reason those food establishments had to get a government approved White Cash Register, because there was so much money disappearing.

OptionOfT··on Nearly 3M Teslas recalled in China over hidden door handles
> I'm surprised. But it shouldn't be up to Tesla; it's illegal and they never get on the road in countries with proper regulations.

The USA doesn't mandate red turn signals. They can be red or amber. Plenty of BMWs with amber turn signals. Although the current one has red turn signals.

I'd say on modern cars it's less bad, the turn signal is usually a strip, and the brake light is larger, joined with a 3rd brake light.

But on one of those old Ford vans, with incandescent red brake/turn signals with no/often broken 3rd light: you have to wait a second before you can determine if the person is braking / indicating.

OptionOfT··on My agent.md to improve LLM-assisted code quality
A bunch of these should be enforce with linting, that way people who still hand-craft code get the same kind of feedback, e.g. Always use {}, even on a one-line "if" statement. & Keep function names short. Less than 30 characters.

Then this one really is a pattern that creates a lot of churn:

- Add a small, to the point, comment to explain what the block does and why. Use examples when possible. Propose ASCII drawings to explain complete systems.

The what _is_ the code.

OptionOfT··on Kagi added a setting for removing paywalled links from search results
I'd actually want to know if it is a paid website BEFORE clicking on it.

Nothing worse than clicking on it, and after 5 seconds you get the naggy pop-up that disables the scrolling. Now I need to send it to archive.ph to read it.

I'm fine with a paywall, but put it above, don't interrupt me as I am reading.

OptionOfT··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
Dual feeling about this.

Non-OEM tires are usually louder, because they trade in efficiency for noise.

OTOH I had a car that came with Michelin Super Ports and it was a much better ride on Michelin PS4S.
