OnlineCourage··on Descartes was wrong: ‘a person is a person through other persons’ (2017)
> Ubuntu philosophy

First off, there's no such thing as, "X philosophy." Philosophy (the noun) is a field of study, there's no such thing as, "My personal philosophy," - you don't get your own philosophy, there's just "philosophy." It wouldn't make sense to say, "well according to my own personal mathematics..." Likewise it doesn't make sense to do this kind of comparative cultural philosophy nonsense. It's extremely plausible that ancient African philosophers could have been absolutely wrong with certain propositions they put forward, and it is absolutely plausible that French philosophers in the early modern age were completely wrong. There's no, "happy smile and hold hands, let's all agree that there are different philosophies." That would be called politics, not philosophy.

> a person is a person through other persons

Secondly, that was not what Descartes was talking about, he was not talking about how to define a person, he was talking about how do you create a platform on which to define absolute truth of the existence of something. He was saying, "well, suppose you have a mind, doesn't matter where that mind comes from, just a mind...if that mind doubts that even itself exists, that doubting proves that it exists, therefore it exists." He wasn't talking about defining personhood, he was talking about securing the foundation of how knowledge works.

OnlineCourage··on Portland Considers Protection Against Discrimination for Atheists, Agnostics
Judiasm says that they don't, but they do. Many Hindus believe everyone is already Hindu. Buddhism is not a religion.
OnlineCourage··on Scientists call for ban on lethal, autonomous robots
How is an ICBM not already a lethal, autonomous robot? I think they may mean affordable lethal autonomous robots.
OnlineCourage··on China Thwarts U.S. Effort to Promote American Culture on Campuses
That's nonsense. If anything racism in China favors white Americans over regular Han Chinese. As a white guy who has lived in China extensively I can tell you this. Are there anti foreign sentiments which shift with political winds? Yes. A structured racism focused at keeping white people down? No. Keeping Chinese minorities down? Yes.
OnlineCourage··on An FDA for Algorithms?
> You can harvest any data that you want, on anybody

Fear mongering. There are already laws in place about certain kinds of data such as GDPR, PCI or HIPAA. HIPPA violations can include prison time. Please be specific with what data and processing of such data causes harm and why rather than saying, "computers are scary."

OnlineCourage··on Gates Foundation spent $200M funding toilet research
That's super callous and cynical. "Some African governments are corrupt so don't do anything." Deaths from malaria in Africa fell from 800,000 per year in 2000 to 400,000 per year today because of the introduction of affordable mosquito nets. That fact alone refutes your entire arguement.
OnlineCourage··on Cancer-Linked Chemicals Manufactured by 3M Are Turning Up in Drinking Water
I'm from Cottage Grove area, in fact my childhood dentist was there. None of this is news, it is a terrible legacy, Cottage Grove was not the only area contaminated, much of the entire Eastern Twin Cities suburbs have problems in the water with ongoing cleanup efforts. 3M is a chemical company, in essence. How much cancer did it cause? I don't know...some. While many Americans don't agree that climate change is an important issue, I think it's well accepted that just dumping chemicals is bad. I think the issue is whether it's in one's own back yard or not.

OnlineCourage··on Bosnians who speak medieval Spanish
The late 1400s was very far away from Nationalism. You are thinking of the early 1800s. The first truly Nationalist state was France under Napolean or some would say the USA, but even earlier USA barely held itself together for the first 20 years.
OnlineCourage··on Why the falling cost of light matters (2017)
That severly shortens the lifetime of an LED, like by a factor of 10. So I would guess it is not common because much of the benefit that gets marketed is the longer lifetime. It is possible to build a better dimmer switch which actually works across the full profile of voltage variation but the problem then is you have to pay an engineer money and why do that when you can spend money on booze and dinners to win more sales contracts with your lighting distributors and get a higher ROI? The lighting world is a very consolidated place.
OnlineCourage··on Why the falling cost of light matters (2017)
LEDs do not flicker, it is the pulse width modulation within the control circuit which causes flicker, which ultimately is due to poor design not the LED itself. CRI is based upon the patents held by the semiconductor fab which affect the type of semiconductor which can be used and how the phosphor is applied which varies. Binning (or statistical sampling) of LED chromacity improves over time across the industry. LEDs work great as spotlights actually because the most widely available lens material creates a sharp, direct light as opposed to a diffuse light. ;-)

OnlineCourage··on Advice from a Geographer: Put Away the Map
As someone who has hiked and canoed extensively in far flung places with and without maps - I can unequivically say that maps can be amazingly useful representations of the world or they can downright kill you with misleading info depending upon when they were updated and how often the landscape changes, as well as the just general quality of the map.

OnlineCourage··on Eventbrite UA claims right to film, distribute users events
Your example would never happen. The TOS is written referring to what it describes as, "The Services," which does not include anything other than what Eventbrite does. This clause is to prevent people from posting copywrited images as their header image and forcing liability onto Eventbrite.
OnlineCourage··on Why doesn’t the IRS send me a tax bill based on the info they already have?
Article 1, section 2 of the US Constitution prohibits direct taxation. If the IRS sends you a bill, that's becoming a little more 'directy' because they are just assuming that every single head had a W2 with no deductions outside of the narrow info that they know and now you have to proove them wrong. Whereas asking you what you think you should owe and giving you an opportunity to present all facts is more of a levy, and much more just. What this person is asking for on Stackexchange is just pure laziness and super narrow thinking about what activities one could potentially get involved with in one's life. Those who point toward H&R block as being at fault: well yes they would certainly want to maintain a horrible IRS UX, but that is completely separate from how taxes are levyed, which is constitutional. Also I love Sweden but just because Sweden does it does not mean automatically the best solution.

>I’ve recently studied the criticisms of prevailing economic system, and the possibilities of radical left politics that would make “Star Trek socialism” – or Fully Automated Luxury Communism – a topic of serious political debate.

His point is that, "I'm a consultant, I work in sweeping generalizations and broker attention, give me money."

OnlineCourage··on Electric currency could trash cash (1999)
I believe their definition of electric cash, although fuzzy, included the attribute of being not tied to a bank. Are there cashless payments in London which do not in some way tie to a bank? Asking as someone not from London.
OnlineCourage··on China Is Quietly Reshaping the World
HN is primarily read by western web software engineers who have little incentive to understand the nuances of China for now because China's web is effectively a closed ecosystem.
OnlineCourage··on China Is Quietly Reshaping the World
>Why can't China now run a huge deficit like the US is expected / encouraged to do, thus becoming consumers of products built in the US and Europe, instead of the other way around?

Because banks and other Govenments believe that there is a ~20% chance that China will implode and have a popular revolution over the next decade for any given decade. That's Morgan Stanley's number, other banks may project different numbers. China is incredibly unstable relative to the US and European countries. Half of China, does not want to be part of China, and not in a joking, "Texas will secede" type of way. There's tons of poverty, not enough water, overpopulation. There's little democratic self correcting mechanisms.

OnlineCourage··on China Is Quietly Reshaping the World
Actually as an American you can simply go to China on a, "whatever" visa and start working on arrival, there is no enforcement of the law except if you start making real money and stepping in someone's toes. It's virtually impossible for average Chinese to get to the US even as a tourist. Western Tech companies doing well? 3M, Microsoft, Yahoo,...it depends on how good of a job they did forming relationships or paying bribes and how immune their business model is to asset siezure and copying.
OnlineCourage··on China Is Quietly Reshaping the World
Fetish? Your question reads as a farce, because there is no, "Chinese Government," it is merely the actions of the Chinese Communist Party, which has 50 million members and is democratic within itself. What China is in terms an elite party controlled state and what you are assuming as an unuanced, "undemocratic state," whatever that means, shows you should probably just read a lot more on China and how it actually works rather than dismissing any potential criticisms as sexual in nature, implying they warrant no further discussion, if you are genuinely curious.
