OedipusRex··on Uber gets sued over alleged ‘Hell’ program to track Lyft drivers
"The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleges Uber broadly invaded the privacy of the Lyft drivers, specifically violated the California Invasion of Privacy Act and Federal Wiretap Act and engaged in unfair competition"
OedipusRex··on Comcast-Owned Vox Runs Commercial for Comcast’s $500M Snapchat Investment
I'd argue that Vox is closer to MSM than it's viewer's would like to believe. They're fact-lite and heavy on opinion; every party has 'em.

That being said I watch everything they put out on YouTube. Some of it's really good.

OedipusRex··on We Salute You, S3 Team Member
That person works at Amazon, they don't need a GoFundMe.
OedipusRex··on Ask HN: Is Heroku down?
AWS is down.
OedipusRex··on White House Open Data Unavailable
I'd argue that Trump probably doesn't have a clue this even exist, someone else dictated it's archival/removal.
OedipusRex··on Snap Inc. S-1
They have "made" cameras before, one was a pair of sunglasses iirc.

But still. Make that your slogan?

OedipusRex··on Snap Inc. S-1
Still don't use the native camera on Android.
OedipusRex··on Dropbox Paper
They Google'd it.
OedipusRex··on Dropbox Paper
I would describe it as a feature for a target audience. /s

They took a ton of screen real estate just to show us pictures of people typing into non-descriptive text-editors and people use laptops.

OedipusRex··on Western Union admits to aiding wire fraud, to pay $586M
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
OedipusRex··on Defending Against Hackers Took a Back Seat at Yahoo, Insiders Say
Who would enforce it on any website? The US government, or W3C, or IANA? Everyone talks about a free and open web and no one wants someone poking around behind the scenes. I don't trust anyone to enforce password rules for fear of exploitation. The user is responsible for their password security and it should stop there.

That being said, Yahoo should have force reset passwords.

OedipusRex··on Defending Against Hackers Took a Back Seat at Yahoo, Insiders Say
Regulations would be impossible to enforce. You can write up as many laws as you want but trying to enforce security constraints on new websites alone is an impossible task.
OedipusRex··on Lifelogging is dead for now
A few people in the early days of Justin.tv (now just known as Twitch) would "LifeCast", one of the more popular broadcasters ended up working for Twitch.
OedipusRex··on Pirates Plunder 4K Hateful Eight, but Did They Crack DCP?
So it's a better quality Chinese knock off? We need a word for this.
OedipusRex··on Emperor Akihito of Japan Raises Possibility of Leaving Throne
A war with who?
OedipusRex··on Oakland Man Charged with Arson After Throwing Molotov Cocktails at Google
>In an interview with police and prosecutors last week, Diaz said he "felt Google was watching him and it made him upset."

Well, they are.

OedipusRex··on How Smart Leaders Build Trust
Exactly, nothing about this was "new", it takes trust to be a leader. WOW! This was a plug for a book.
OedipusRex··on How Anti-Growth Sentiment, Reflected in Zoning Laws, Thwarts Equality
I have the feeling if this happens land will be bought up by corporations, not the other way around.
OedipusRex··on How Anti-Growth Sentiment, Reflected in Zoning Laws, Thwarts Equality
It's not so much that urban development kills "character", it's that current urban development methods are ugly. They have no class to them. The "not in my backyard" argument will always be brought about by people who's previously beautiful surroundings are replaced by brick rectangles with evenly spaced windows. The trick is to make urban areas attractive but not gentrified.
OedipusRex··on Survey of research into the effects of pornography
"More than 36% of the internet content is porn". Is this in terms of bandwidth, size of files, or some other metric? If it's size of files then of course porn in going to be a large percentage of files because video files are large.
OedipusRex··on Valve funding VR projects, exclusivity-free, with pre-paid Steam revenue
As much money as Valve and HTC have put into the Vive it makes sense. The more VR games and content available = more Vive's sold. You have to spend money to make money.
OedipusRex··on Apple iPhones Found to Have Violated Chinese Rival’s Patent
Exactly, China's massive cheap labor force and emerging markets give it the position of "fuck you". China knows that first world TNCs want a piece of the pie and China is grooming it's domestic (see "state run") corporations to reap the benefits.
OedipusRex··on Apple iPhones Found to Have Violated Chinese Rival’s Patent
And lose all that cheap labor? China knows that threat would be empty.
OedipusRex··on Managing containers on Mesos with HalfLife2
If you haven't play Estranged yet, it's amazing. http://store.steampowered.com/app/261820/
OedipusRex··on Foreign Students Seen Cheating More Than Domestic Ones
As well, it seems to be non-domestic students who are from countries with low English language penetration, possibly because they tend to have peer groups almost exclusively of their native language.

Again, this is anecdotal.

OedipusRex··on Managing containers on Mesos with HalfLife2
While technically the same engine, this is actually Garry's Mod.
OedipusRex··on Raspberry Pi 3 Model B confirmed, with onboard BT LE and WiFi
The onboard Wifi and Bluetooth really makes the barrier of entry for IoT $5 (assuming the stick with the $5 mark)
OedipusRex··on Yahoo is shutting down about half of its content verticals
Does anyone have concrete evidence that Tumblr didn't get axed? I don't think the article said anything about it, unless that falls under "lifestyle".
OedipusRex··on Things I would build if I worked at GitHub
I hope all of his post on this blog are like this one (https://kevin.is/committed-to-github/, Kevin is committed to GitHub)
OedipusRex··on Twitter Contest Winning as a Service
I feel like whoever ran that contest should have checked to see that all of the winning accounts were connected.
