OedipusRex··on Grab is messing up OpenStreetMap data in Southeast Asia
I'm a little confused as to why Grab would hire a firm to update OSM via satellite images. OSM had to be more accurate than the outdated sat. images so why was there a need in the first place?
OedipusRex··on How “One-Plus-Five” Is Shaping American Cities
I don't hear anyone around me but I only share one wall with another apartment and I'm on the top floor so no one above me. That said, noise leaks to and from the hallways.
OedipusRex··on How “One-Plus-Five” Is Shaping American Cities
Sameness at scale.
OedipusRex··on How “One-Plus-Five” Is Shaping American Cities
I've lived in two of these types of buildings, I live in one currently. The first one I lived in was at a big state college and was put up in very short time. The craftsmanship, or lack thereof that went into this building was very noticeable. My roommates outlet was at a 20 degree angle, the doors hollow, and the paint was very cheap.

The one I currently live in is a bit better, it's in a Midwestern state capitol and has nicer amenities but the doors are still hollow, and the paint is still cheap.

I mean both iPhone and Android do this but Google won’t pull competitors.

Enough address space for every atom on the surface of the earth.
OedipusRex··on The Cryptocurrency Industry Is 'On the Brink of an Implosion', Research Says
It doesn't, Bitcoin is as safe as the security of the person who holds it. And as someone who had Bitcoin on Mt Gox, this is a moot point to argue.
OedipusRex··on The Cryptocurrency Industry Is 'On the Brink of an Implosion', Research Says
Yes a nationstate does protect the value of it's money with a standing army but to imply the purpose is to protect the currency is false. The armed forces and stability of the country bring about the value of the currency, not the other way around.
OedipusRex··on Chances DNA can be used to find your family? Sixty percent and rising
My mother got a call about three years ago from a man who told her he thinks his mother is my mother's sister. Turns out my grandmother had a child at 16 and put her up for adoption. Now I have an extra aunt and she's super cool.
OedipusRex··on Delete Your Account Now: A Conversation with Jaron Lanier
So what's the alternative? Even if we roll our own software we still utilize ISP lines.
OedipusRex··on GoPro Hero 7
GoPro has been dying for a few years, there are a ton of alternatives at much lower prices and if you're just strapping it to a bike or something no need to go top of the line.

OedipusRex··on China launches platform to stamp out 'online rumours'
"The platform operates under the guidance of 27 government departments..."

China loves bureaucracy.

OedipusRex··on Buzzfeed journalist denied China visa following coverage of Xinjiang crackdown
China is really good at keeping track of dissent.
OedipusRex··on Jack Dorsey says in an interview he's rethinking the core of how Twitter works
But you can't turn it off. That's the issue.
OedipusRex··on Jack Dorsey says in an interview he's rethinking the core of how Twitter works
Twitter is a master class in how not to run a social media platform. They alienate their power users by shutting down APIs which break 3rd party apps. Their censorship seems to have no rhyme or reason to it. They simply do not listen to their users. No one wants "In case you missed it", or to know what someone just liked, we just want to read tweets in order they came in.

OedipusRex··on Twitter delays shutdown of legacy APIs as it launches a replacement
Not to mention Twitter would ban your IP if you did large amounts of scraping.
OedipusRex··on NSA collected 500M U.S. call records in 2017, a sharp rise: official report
"In a statement, Timothy Barrett, a spokesman at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which released the annual report, said the government “has not altered the manner in which it uses its authority to obtain call detail records.” "

This is the issue, this is all legal.

OedipusRex··on The Story of NESticle, the Ambitious Emulator That Redefined Retro Gaming
I knew Don "MindRape" Moore personally, he passed away pretty recently but he was a big influence in my life as I got into computers.

Crazy cool dude, gave himself a "snake tongue" with a pair of scissors by himself!

OedipusRex··on Failed intercept at Dhahran caused by a software error in handling of timestamps
That was a temporary fix, then a software patch was released. I also wouldn't call that a "software" fix.

OedipusRex··on New Kids on the Block: Understanding Developers Entering the Workforce Today
I graduated in May from a Big 10 college with a computer technology degree.

As much as remote work seems great, I still need a senior level developer I can walk over to and ask questions of.

As well, the program I was in was in a constant state of flux, and the incoming freshmen are able to choose a lot of targeted tracks like Cyber Security, Forensics, High Performance Computing, etc. When I started there were too options: one focused on the business side and one on the engineering side.

OedipusRex··on Facebook to add 3k people to community operations team to improve moderation
The issue with work like this is it is very distressing. Having to look at videos and pictures of horrific acts (suicides, child porn, etc) is not a pleasant job. Many of those who do this in law enforcement (mainly child porn) have high rates of PTSD and other issues.
