OOPMan··on Microsoft announces new Bing and Edge browser powered by upgraded ChatGPT AI
You don't need a chatbot to do any of that.

You're basically just saying your too damn lazy to do any of this stuff unless the amount of effort you need to put in is as minimal as possible.

While I get being tired and stressed (I'm a parent too) I feel like what you're doing is not much better than just zoning out.

I don't want more ads
OOPMan··on Ask HN: Did anyone else lose their marbles?
OP should get checked for schizophrenia.
OOPMan··on Tell HN: Firefox Is an awesome browser right now
Obvious shill post is obvious
OOPMan··on ChatGPT Plus
You should probably not be thinking about it in that way.

Anthropomorphising statistical models is a bad idea...

OOPMan··on ChatGPT Plus
I pay $80 a year for IntelliJ and that works out to waaay less than something like CoPilot or ChatGPT and is waaay more consistently useful.

$20 a month for ML tool that is only sometimes useful is a tough sell, especially in a world where a lot of people feel like $80 a year for IntelliJ is too much.

Coders are thrifty bastards, except when it comes to their personal vices in which case financial responsibility goes out the window...

OOPMan··on Replacing a SQL analyst with 26 recursive GPT prompts
I reckon we can replace a shill with less
OOPMan··on Macroeconomic changes have made it impossible for me to want to pay you
When is a big If.

Much like the simulation hypothesis, "super intelligent AI" is more religion than reality at this point.

OOPMan··on The Yaml document from hell
I've ways preferred HOCON to YAML but it never took off :-/

It's a pity, because compared to YAML it's a lot simpler from the rules perspective while being flexible enough to do some useful stuff over plain JSON

Also, it isn't white space dependent, something which annoys me know end with YAML

OOPMan··on Ask HN: I'm 40 and feel my mental ability declining. Programming seems harder.
I'm 39. I don't feel like my coding ability is declining, but my ability to give a shit when people keep reinventing the wheel and repeating past mistakes is declining extremely quickly.

It's not that I can't code, it's that work is just making me not want to code. I'd rather put time into playing fighting games while my fingers still work, if anything XD

OOPMan··on How to store your app's entire state in the url
Hmmmmmm....combine this with a link shortener and you have much the same effect except the actual state gets stored elsewhere.

Which is totally missing the point and being intentionally daft but it is a little amusing XD

OOPMan··on How to store your app's entire state in the url
I feel like you're ignoring the context of the linked post while also trotting out the most obvious comparison of all times.

OOPMan··on Amazon to Lay Off over 17,000 Workers, More Than First Planned
You might want to rephrase that because the way you stated it just seems kinda silly, as if somehow titled-obsessed idiots don't exist in US companies or something...
OOPMan··on Sergey Brin: Irate Call from Steve Jobs
Ah yes, the at-will employment in the US at work I see.

In this case, Jobs wills it that some people work for him until he's okay with them leaving and throws his toys out the cot when the people in question feel otherwise.

XD

OOPMan··on Microsoft is preparing to add ChatGPT to Bing
Indeed.

They should be renamed to ShitOverflow, because that's how bad the quality is a lot of the time.

OOPMan··on How many layers of UI inconsistencies are in Windows 11?
I find the phrase "outdated spinning dots" design weirdly hilarious.

Why is it outdated?

It can't be because it doesn't convey the concept properly anymore, since it still does just fine in this regard...

I don't think I'll ever understand the minds of UI designers...

OOPMan··on John Carmack Leaves Meta
"VR can bring value to most of the people in the world, and no one is better positioned to do it than Meta."

I'm now concerned for Carmacks sanity...

OOPMan··on Peter Norvig critically reviews AlphaCode’s code quality
It is silly, it's magical thinking.
OOPMan··on I liberate the ending to Minecraft from Microsoft and give it to you
Tattooed on themselves?

Wow...uh....that's kinda daft

OOPMan··on I liberate the ending to Minecraft from Microsoft and give it to you
Kinda interesting this comes out not too long after Mick Gordon called out iD.

I wonder if this guy saw that and figured he'd try something similar.

The difference is that Mick Gordon worked his ass off for years and that the music is a significant element to the Doom games, where as the ending poem in Minecraft is pretty insignificant.

OOPMan··on Puter
A thin client to use on your thick client XD
OOPMan··on Kite is saying farewell and open-sourcing its code
I pay for IntelliJ myself so I always have my preferred tool no matter where I work.

When GitHub Copilot decided they wanted to charge $10 a month after the beta was over I noped out.

For what it does, it sure as shit isn't worth paying more than my yearly subscription to IntelliJ...

OOPMan··on In defense of linked lists
Oh lord, can anyone make a post without whining on about Twitter?
OOPMan··on Twitter’s mass layoffs have begun
I imagine that, like a lot of big companies, Twitter has a lot of fat that could be trimmed.
OOPMan··on ZLibrary domains have been seized by the United States Postal Inspection Service
A multi-billion year backup is probably pointless.

The earth will be uninhabitable in that time frame due to changes in the atmosphere and beyond that the sun itself will complete it's lifecycle.

I know there's a big fad to "just believe" in a SF future that spans space and time but physical realities in this area are pretty rough.

I think the best thing people could do is realise that, eventually, everything ends and believing otherwise when it comes to the human race is much like believing in an afterlife.

OOPMan··on American society is so focused on race that it is blind to class
Coming from South Africa, AA leaves a bad taste in my mouth as there it went hand in hand with massive amounts of corruption.

Maybe a ZA issue tho?

OOPMan··on Fake Books
That's because it's about PTSD.

I suspect the commenter is either ignorant or just decided to roll in all the terrible sequels...

OOPMan··on Fake Books
The original Rambo was actually anti-war. Did you even watch it?
OOPMan··on Brave browser now blocks cookie banners
Vivaldi is another fine option, it even has a built-in ad-block on both the desktop and mobile
