OOPMan··on I used Stable Diffusion and Dreambooth to create an art portrait of my dog
"art portrait" seems grammatically wrong...?
OOPMan··on Replacing my best friends with an LLM trained on 500k group chat messages
I love how people keep using ML to depress birth rates.

I think we may have answered the question as to where all the aliens are...they too invented LLMs and soon went extinct due to no one ever leaving their rooms to reproduce for real.

XD

OOPMan··on SQL Maxis: Why We Ditched RabbitMQ and Replaced It with a Postgres Queue
Don't worry, Celery has always been and will always be a flaming pile of garbage
OOPMan··on SQL Maxis: Why We Ditched RabbitMQ and Replaced It with a Postgres Queue
Just wait till a start convinces someone to give them money for a system that allows anyone, anywhere to queue up infinite loops XD
OOPMan··on Night of the living brain fog dead or how I hacked myself better via open source
Except all the ones it didn't work for who didn't crow about it working?

Your logic is kinda faulty...

OOPMan··on Night of the living brain fog dead or how I hacked myself better via open source
I.e. a quack

Seems even a quack can get some things right XD

OOPMan··on I wish GPT4 had never happened
Right....and all the people not working would get paid how exactly?

Or does this system just assume they're all homeless and jobless?

If it's the latter then I'm sure it could work...not sure it would be a huge improvement tho...

OOPMan··on I wish GPT4 had never happened
Ah yes, I'm sure you have a solution from one of the most difficult problems ever?

It's easy to condemn the system but without a solution you're just barking in the wind...

Just to be clear, I also think there are major issues with "the system", but I also don't think this is an easy problem to solve or everyone would be living in magical happy land already...

OOPMan··on Creator of Catan, Klaus Teuber, has died
I'll let you know once I finally play all the games I own XD
OOPMan··on The age of average
This seems pretty cherry picked to me.

It's not completely wrong but it's not super honest either.

OOPMan··on BlenderGPT: Use commands in English to control Blender with OpenAI's GPT-4
Ooof
OOPMan··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
Right...we make stuff cheaper than ever before...but because all these people don't have jobs they can't afford it anyway...
OOPMan··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
Agreed. It feels like a lot of the people burning hard on AI seem to think that when the jobs are gone some benevolent benefactors (who exactly?) will decide to institute UBI for all because....why exactly?

It seems much more likely to me that all that will happen is there will be a lot more poor people...

OOPMan··on Ask HN: How are you using GPT to be productive?
You're not alone.

I can't be bothered to add an extra layer of bullshit into the already bullshit infested realm that is the internet.

OOPMan··on OpenAI tech gives Microsoft's Bing a boost in search battle with Google
I'm confused.

Surely ChatGPT, etc have been trained on content from these very same SEO optimisation hellholes you're talking about if it was trained by scraping the web?

Is there some trick that allows it to determine whether the content it's being trained on is SEO garbage?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but it seems like all you're getting is an amalgam of SEO content feed to you by a bot...

OOPMan··on Web fingerprinting is worse than I thought
Tested fingerprint.com with Vivaldi Mobile and it didn't correlate me across a norm tab and an Incognito one, so it's not fool foolproof...
OOPMan··on GitHub Copilot X – Sign up for technical preview
Nope, but VsCode addicts are usually too cheap to try a paid-for tool like PyCharm
OOPMan··on Hyundai promises to keep buttons in cars
You mean perfect American English right?

Voice control goofs with my South African accent all the time...

OOPMan··on Hyundai promises to keep buttons in cars
Right, because the person that broke into your car is not going to just going to rip it open with a crowbar?
OOPMan··on Hyundai promises to keep buttons in cars
You really think screens and integrated electronics are easier to maintain and cheaper to replace than plastic buttons and copper wire?
OOPMan··on Give babies peanut butter to cut peanut allergies, study says
As a South African in Canada the nut restriction in schools here is incredibly annoying.
OOPMan··on Show HN: BBC “In Our Time”, categorised by Dewey Decimal, heavy lifting by GPT
Cranking that hype level to the next stage eh?
OOPMan··on Show HN: BBC “In Our Time”, categorised by Dewey Decimal, heavy lifting by GPT
How perfect is almost perfect? How do you correct errors?
OOPMan··on AI is making it easier to create more noise, when all I want is good search
Given that it seems to be companies like Google that have created this problem....maybe we don't want a new Google...
OOPMan··on 3dfx: So powerful it’s kind of ridiculous
I had one of those weird TNT2 M64 cards that you could fool into thinking it was a proper TNT2.

Unfortunately for mine the foolery didn't work perfectly and I recall the card was a bit unstable when running that way, or maybe it didn't achieve the optimal performance possible for one of those fiddled M64s.

Not really a huge surprise, IIRC it was a super cheap card...

OOPMan··on Dropping the SAT requirement is a luxury belief
They dropped the passing grade in South African high schools a decade or so back (maybe a bit more or less, longer after I exited the system in 2001).

Wouldn't you know it, graduating more students with terrible grades didn't magically lead to more capable working or studying adults.

It almost like pushing people through who are struggling to cope doesn't help them...

OOPMan··on The Missing Semester of Your CS Education
> I'm a terrible programmer

Oh? Did you win some award? I'm curious as to how you're determining this?

OOPMan··on AMD Grabs over 30% CPU Market Share as Intel Continues to Decline
Well...when you're spending that much money of course you're not going to feel remorse XD
OOPMan··on AMD Grabs over 30% CPU Market Share as Intel Continues to Decline
I was wondering how far I'd have to scroll before someone trotted out the Apple horse.

Farther than I thought, it turns out.

You know, for all the stuff about Apple silicon being a game changer it doesn't really seem like the game has changed that much...

OOPMan··on Bing AI can't be trusted
Pretty sure Isaac Asimov wrote a short story that very much hit this note decades ago, although it was to do with math.
