OOPMan··on Show HN: YouTube banned adblockers so I built an extension to skip their ads
Yes, it is worth my time.

Ads are cancer.

If you can't find some other less toxic way to support your business then it should die.

FYI, I pay for plenty of other streaming services. I just don't feel YouTube is worth it. The content creators are worth it, YouTube itself is not.

That sounds spectacularly unhealthy

Nice try SkyNet
OOPMan··on Debugging tricks in the browser
Sure, those are pretty interesting points but I feel like there is a bit of difference between the environment of a browser and that of a runtime like the JVM which tends to explain why certain debugging tools exist in one environment and not the other.

For the same reason it doesn't seem that useful to bring in very environment-specific stuff like Redux.

OOPMan··on Debugging tricks in the browser
Right...but how would this work tho?

Since on a more open platform like the CLR, JVM Python interpreter or bare metal (as opposed to a controlled sandbox like the browser) there are many different network traffic libraries dealing with all kinds of different ways of communicating (everything from basic HTTP to binary protocols for communicating with hardware like DNP3).

How would the standard debugger hook into all these different libraries? I'm assuming they'd have to implement hooks and maintain them too, nevermind if there's more than one debugger available to be supported.

Seems like a lot of effort compared to just using a tool like Wireshark or, for HTTP stuff, a MITM proxy...

What in particular do you feel is so special about the JS debugging experience?

I've done a lot of debugging on Python, Java and C++ over the years and never felt like I was missing tools (although I certainly met plenty of people that were ignorant of their options in this regard...)

OOPMan··on NewPipe – Lightweight YouTube experience for Android
If you want this on PC there is FreeTube.
OOPMan··on Doug Lenat has died
I suspect you and the person you're responding to have different ideas of what the word blunt means in this context?
OOPMan··on Man spends entire career mastering crappy codebase
The assumption that everyone that came before was an idiot is really frustrating...and yet I find myself doing it too.

Generally speaking to that person helps, although sometimes they do turn out to actually be an idiot.

OOPMan··on I'm betting on HTML
I spent some time recently working on a C++ application for Windows using Qt for the UI and general application framework.

I was surprised at how easy it is to achieve useful things with C++ and Qt in this day and age.

When I used it back in the early 2000s it was a lot more painful but both C++ and Qt have come a looking way.

Honestly, to paraphrase Hayao Miyazaki...the web was a mistake.

It's almost a classic example of worse is better.

OOPMan··on Ask HN: Is anyone using PyPy for real work?
Wow, I didn't know anyone still uses Wing.

The modern debugging tools available in other IDEs work fine with PyPy (and have for years), so I guess that must be a wing issue.

OOPMan··on Refusing to teach kids math will not improve equity
In my home country of South Africa the department of education decided the best way to deal with high failure rates among students with maths was to lower the bar by introducing a "maths literacy" course and allowing people to take it instead of proper maths.

Unsurprisingly, it was a bit of a disaster.

Right on the money
OOPMan··on If PEP 703 is accepted, Meta can commit three engineer-years to no-GIL CPython
Uhuh
OOPMan··on When an app asks for permissions, it should have a “feed fake data” option
This is a nice ask, also completely unlikely to ever happened.
OOPMan··on Try: run a command and inspect its effects before changing your live system
I wanted to use NixOS but it just proved to be too much of a PITA to get going with :-/

Hopefully someone will find a way to take some lessons from it while leaving all the friction behind.

OOPMan··on Maps distort how we see the world
Mildly interesting then I got to then end and saw the "come back next week for my premium on article on WHY" and couldn't help feeling this was basically just a content mill article full of factoids trying to get you to give some random guy on the internet money.

Either that or a pathway to some Evil Conspiracy XD

OOPMan··on Jellyfin: Free software media system
I just run an HTPC/NAS hybrid device with Kodi.

Can't be bothered to mess around with transcoding and no need for streaming to multiple locations in the house so I don't need a transcoding-based solution like this.

OOPMan··on Reddit CEO doubles down on attack on Apollo developer in drama-filled AMA
I think you've well and truly missed the point of that saying.

All it really means is that when things go wrong, you shouldn't assume everyone involved is a giant arsehole trying to stick a spanner in the works.

OOPMan··on Ask HN: Is it just me or GPT-4's quality has significantly deteriorated lately?
I once used a crowdsourcing system called CrowdFlower for a pretty basic task, the results were pretty bad.

Seems like with minimal oversight the human workers like to just say they did the requested task and make up an answer rather than actually do it (The task involved entering an address in Google maps, looking at the street view and confirming insofar as possible if a given business actually resided at the address in question, nothing complicated)

Edit: woops, mixed in the query with another reply that mentioned the human element XD

OOPMan··on Ask HN: Is it just me or GPT-4's quality has significantly deteriorated lately?
Ah, more non-deterministic computing, just what the doctor ordered!

Ground Control and it's sequel were great. Battlezone 2042 was also pretty good
OOPMan··on 0AD, an open source historical RTS in development for 22 years
Pretty sure Genshin Impact was in development as early as 2016, before Breath of the Wild was released, although after it was announced.

Contrary to popular belief, Nintendo are not the only people that make open world games...

You hit the nail on the head. There are definitely these kinds of people and they are definitely highly concentrated in tech.

OOPMan··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
Actually it lives again in the form of Revanced.

You do have to build an APK yourself by applying patches to an official YT APK but it's pretty easy to so with the CLI tool and works a treat.

Also legally much safer than Vance's.
