OGWhales··on Kagi releases alpha version of Orion for Linux
My experience is that one doesn't actually work, though the built-in ad-blocking does work quite well.
OGWhales··on Kagi releases alpha version of Orion for Linux
I've found a few that work but many can be buggy or non-functional, just depends on the extension. The only one I use currently is called "Control Panel for Twitter", which seems to work pretty well.
OGWhales··on US will ban Wall Street investors from buying single-family homes
I don't think a stock market reaction is a good way to measure their impact on the housing market. It's not that they aren't involved in the market, it's that their impact is questionable given the relative size of their participation.
OGWhales··on If AI replaces workers, should it also pay taxes?
Would this not still be the case even if labor wasn't entirely outpaced by capital?
OGWhales··on Cognitive and mental health correlates of short-form video use
I noticed that as well (though I do think there is a time limit), but decided I didn't want to encourage more of it and still avoid any shorts. I usually watch on a TV anyway, so vertical videos are pretty weird...
OGWhales··on Cognitive and mental health correlates of short-form video use
Yeah, I find it odd how hard they push it, like trying to shove it down my throat levels of pushing shorts. I already use their platform heavily, just for regular videos. My guess is they get more data from how you interact with shorts and they find that to be super valuable info over what they get from regular video watching.
OGWhales··on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright
We also need to be far more strict about enforcing properly alignment, so many are pointed too high especially on larger vehicles and pretty much always on anything that's been lifted
OGWhales··on Steam Frame
I was able to use this adapter to get my 2070s DisplayPort output to send 4k120hz to my TV, which only has HDMI ports.

OGWhales··on Steam Machine
Apex is an EA game and actually ran great on Linux until they removed support. Unfortunate, but they said it was necessary to combat cheaters though that claim is somewhat dubious since cheaters is perfectly viable on Windows still.
OGWhales··on Steam Machine
For me it's only games the specifically don't support Linux, which are mostly competitive multiplayer games with anti-cheat software. Apex Legends used to work great on Linux, but they removed support as an attempt to combat cheaters (there are still tons of cheaters).
OGWhales··on Steam Frame
It seems it supports DP 1.4 as well, so perhaps you could get an adapter if your display only supports HDMI 2.1
OGWhales··on Yt-dlp: External JavaScript runtime now required for full YouTube support
> Do you think YT ought to be government-funded

Benn Jordan made a pretty compelling video on this topic, arguing that the existing copyright system and artifacts of it are actually not that great and a potential government system might actually be better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJSTFzhs1O4

I will say that is something I would not have considered reasonable prior to watching his video.

OGWhales··on Yt-dlp: External JavaScript runtime now required for full YouTube support
I don't know if Youtube cares, but other website do attempt to block this as well. They will either black your screen or prevent playback if you try to screen record, even encrypting to prevent recording the HDMI/DP output.
OGWhales··on uBlock Origin Lite in Apple App Store
I've been using Orion for the same reason. It supports chrome/firefox extensions too so you can install uBlock origin, though it's built-in ad-block is quite good but its still cool being able to install other extensions.
OGWhales··on uBlock Origin Lite in Apple App Store
I also love that app sizes get super bloated (several gigs per app) due to cached safari data from the in-app web view. Seems the only way to clear it is to go into settings and wipe the website data for safari entirely. I don't believe app developers can clear this themselves either, despite it appearing as their app taking up so much space when really it's just due to safari cache that seemingly doesn't clear on its own.
OGWhales··on uBlock Origin Lite in Apple App Store
On iOS I have the chrome and gmail app installed and it always opens my links in chrome. Does it use the built-in browser if you don't have chrome?
OGWhales··on The AirPods Pro 3 flight problem
Yup, it's pretty impressive how good IEMs can be at isolating you from sounds with good fitting tips. I am fond of the SpinFit W1 tips, they were much better than whatever stock tips came with mine and they seal really well.
OGWhales··on The AirPods Pro 3 flight problem
That's pretty peculiar... the ANC worked still it just got rid of this issue? I don't have any guesses why that would be.
OGWhales··on The AirPods Pro 3 flight problem
> 100% agree with the required update to 26, I was hugely bummed when I discovered I had to update my devices to pair them.

Interesting, I had no issue pairing despite not being on iOS 26. The only things I noticed was that they didn't show up in the Find My app (which is pretty bad) and that I didn't get the shortcut to the airpods settings on the main setting page and had to go through the bluetooth menu instead, otherwise I could pair and do everything I normally did. Tbh, I didn't even notice an issue until I read online about the two things I mentioned...

OGWhales··on A Word on Omarchy
I'm not seeing why 10 is so significantly worse than 3... How big of a difference is that, really? I believe it took something like 6 failed attempts for my bank to lock me out.
OGWhales··on Pharma is a small component of US health care spending
I'd assume it was their telling them specifically not to get it from a foreign country that was the odd part, as opposed to simply prescribing it from a US pharmacy since ofc that is what a US doctor will do. Maybe enough patients tried this, to save costs, that it resulted in some kind of issue for the doctor and that is why they brought it up.
OGWhales··on Potential issues in curl found using AI assisted tools
I've found this a really useful strategy in many situations when working with LLMS. It seems odd that it works, since one one think its ability to give a good reply to such a question means it already "understands" your intent in the first place, but that's just projecting human ability onto LLMS. I would guess this technique is similar to how reasoning modes seems to improve output quality, though I may misunderstand how reasoning modes work.

I was worried about that too but switching from one monitor to multiple ended up being plug and play for me. I installed hypermon before thinking I would need it, but I didn't as I got lucky that the monitors positioned themselves correctly and there was nothing else that needed to be changed otherwise.
OGWhales··on PlasticList – Plastic Levels in Foods
Key difference is I have no choice but to ingest it, unlike alcohol.
OGWhales··on Why does the U.S. always run a trade deficit?
Is the USD due for a correction? I would agree the current policies do not help, however I have a hard time seeing any other currency actually replacing the dollar as the world's reserve currency.
OGWhales··on Why does the U.S. always run a trade deficit?
> MMT discourse tends to gloss over or ignore the dangers of runaway inflation and act as if you can borrow all you want with no consequence.

I see people say this a lot, which is odd since as far as I have seen it's one of the main points MMT people make. I'm not sure how one of the core insights of MMT has become the main criticism of it, it's kind of funny.

I suppose this is because some people have taken MMT to mean that debt doesn't matter, however that is really not at all what it says. I think a more reasonable conclusion of the system MMT describes is that how money is spent matters greatly (productive vs unproductive spending), the primary purpose of taxes is keeping inflation in-check, and real resources are critical to the health of a currency.

Relevant sections include:

> In support thereof, ICE offered a Gang Field Interview Sheet (“GFIS”) generated by PGPD. The GFIS explained that the only reason to believe Plaintiff Abrego Garcia was a gang member was that he was wearing a Chicago Bulls hat and a hoodie; and that a confidential informant advised that he was an active member of MS-13 with the Westerns clique.

> According to the Department of Justice and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, the “Westerns” clique operates in Brentwood, Long Island, in New York, a state that Plaintiff Abrego Garcia has never lived in.

> The attorney for Plaintiff Abrego Garcia subsequently made multiple attempts to obtain additional information from law enforcement concerning these allegations. PGPD indicated that it did not have any incident report related to the Home Deport episode at all, nor did the Department have any incident reports containing his name. The Hyattsville City Police Department (“HCPD”), on the other hand, confirmed it had an incident report for the Home Depot incident, but that only 3 people were named and Plaintiff Abrego Garcia was not one of them, nor did it have any other incident reports with his name in its database. His attorney also contacted the PGPD Inspector General requesting to speak to the detective who authored the GFIS sheet, but was informed that the detective had been suspended. A request to speak to other officers in the Gang Unit was declined.

> On August 9, 2019, the attorney for ICE indicated on the record that ICE had conferred with its law enforcement partners and that all the evidence and intelligence they had was what was contained in the GFIS.

OGWhales··on Honey has now lost 4M Chrome users after shady tactics were revealed
It was no secret, but perhaps not well known. I was a bit surprised when I saw all the recent discussion about it blowing up as I was already aware that's how it worked, but maybe it didn't get enough attention until the right people talked about it.
OGWhales··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
> I wonder if the 13 hour “outage” was for a larger scale data migration for a separate US version

First I've seen this theory and it makes a ton of sense in light of the new discrepancies between what US and non-US accounts can see and search for.
