Noxchi··on Founder Depression
Everything we do in life is to feel a certain way.

Anything with a brain is driven to acquire certain feelings and move away from others.

And all feelings have to do with the future.

That is, feelings are either

1. a prediction of what you believe will happen in the future. For example, happiness is the belief that something good will happen in the future.

2. a feeling that you should feel in the future when you come across this event again (data for #1 to work). For example, pain happens after you lose something, and this serves as a reminder for the future, if you ever come across this event again, don't do what you just did.

So on the topic of the post, what is depression?

Depression is the belief that you will not have good things happen to you in the future. It comes from what you believe (in your emotional brain), not what you think. And your beliefs come from memories (which in turn come from experiences).

The more recent a memory / experience, the stronger it is. If you have few experiences of good things happening in the past X timeframe, you will start to become depressed. X varies for people, it can be 3 months or 3 years.

So what counts as a good thing or a bad thing?

It all comes from how you interpret experiences. This can be controlled consciously, but only if you bring your emotional brain into the meeting and communicate with it in language it understands (action and visualization).

For example, I used to be addicted to reddit. While I consciously knew it wasn't good to be going to reddit so much, my emotional brain didn't mind. But after discovering a process that uses these principles, I quit "cold-turkey" by imagining a lot of bad stuff in relation to reddit. I wrote (I find writing a good method for visualizing) about all the stuff I was missing out on because of reddit. I wrote about how all I was doing there was arguing with a bunch of fat sweaty no-life neckbeards, which would only lead to bad things to me. Then after I wrote this, I went to delete my reddit account and I thought "whoa this is serious" (you HAVE to feel this way, a.k.a. surprise. Surprise happens when your emotional brain realizes it's past way of thinking is invalid). I thought about it for a couple minutes, but followed through and deleted it. After that, I never went on it for months and would be repulsed at the idea of going there. I rarely go there now.

Anyway, about depression specifically to entrepreneurs or "goal oriented" people. I believe the way to be happy here is to change our beliefs. The goal shouldn't be to have success, but to do the things well that lead to success.

Let's say you want to build a wall (think of the wall as your goal). If you're only happy if you have the wall, then you will be sad throughout the journey until the end when the wall is easy to see finished.

Then after the wall is made, well you don't necessarily have anything good to look forward to now (which is what happiness is), so your happiness will start to drop.

But what if instead, our happiness wasn't dependant on whether we have a wall or not, but rather how many bricks we laid today?

Then we could look forward to "I'm going to lay X bricks today!" and get a much faster success feedback loop.

I'm going to try a process similar to the reddit one above to link good things not with having the wall, but with laying the bricks.

Noxchi··on Why Startups Need to Focus on Sales, Not Marketing
Marketing is salesmanship in media.

If you do marketing first, you're putting the cart before the horse.

You should do sales manually first before you try to automate it away with marketing, because the feedback you get will give you extreme leverage in your marketing later.

It applies to everyone.

Everyone has a internal "thermostat" of how much they deserve to make. After they get above that, then they feel bad about making more and don't usually do any work.

Noxchi··on So You’re Not Desirable
It is true, and it's caused for evolutionary reasons.

When people have sex, the woman is in a much more dangerous place than a man.

Having a baby for a woman is very costly. She needs someone to protect her while it happens and to help raise the child.

The cost for a man is very low. He only needs a couple minutes to do his part in making a baby, then he can leave at any time.

So with that in mind, lets say the scenario is like this:

If a man impregnates a woman and he stays, the chance the baby survives to reproduction is 90%.

If a man impregnates a woman and he leaves, the chance the baby survives to reproduction is 10%.

So with those statistics, the man is actually in a very advantageous position.

As long as he impregnates 10 or more women in his lifetime, he is ahead than if he had stayed with the same woman for all his life.

Of course, the more healthy the woman, the more likely the baby is to survive even if he leaves. Beauty = healthy in evolutionary terms. If the woman is pretty, maybe she can even get another guy to raise his kids for him! So men seek beauty primarily.

So for a man it is genetically superior to impregnate multiple women (which generally means not staying too close to any of them).

A female on the other hand, can only have children a few times in her life. And she only gets a few shots at it.

If the man leaves, her shot is very likely to end up in failure.

So the woman needs to be very picky about who she has children with. She needs to judge his character, to see if he will stay with her and raise the child. And defend her, fight off aggression, etc..

So to a woman, character is more important than beauty, because that's what determines if her genes survive or not.

Erotic fiction is a billion dollar industry and the vast majority of buyers are women. Manly man stories = porn for women.

Noxchi··on Lectures Aren't Just Boring, They're Ineffective, Too
Hahaha, $200k and 4 years for something you can get from a $200 marketing package and a couple months is a great investment?

If you take an interest in people, it's not hard to continue a conversation.

Instead the author decided

> Hurr I heard a black person say they didn't have a job, better stop talking to him then write an article about not being too inquisitive lest you uncover people fitting into stereotypes!!

Which is racist because it implies the stereotype is true and that you should change your behavior so that you do not upset people over it. Instead of treating the person like a person and continuing the conversation.

The reason you feel against donations is because you probably have a negative psychological view of accepting help. You probably feel that you bother people when you want to ask them for free help in real life.

Well this mental block you have is not true to the world. You should do what other good entrepreneurs do and stop putting your own limiting beliefs onto your non-profit business.

Noxchi··on Ask HN: AdSense alternatives?
It sounds like you don't have much experience with being an affiliate.

An affiliate is a "marketer on commission". Much like a salesman on commission.

>Get too successful and chances are the company you have an affiliate agreement with will get tired of paying out large sums to you (sound familiar?) They will either kill your relationship outright, or replicate your business model first and then kill your relationship once it's taken hold.

This is like saying if a salesman gets too successful at his company, they will fire him and make the sales themselves.

I've never heard of this happening, and it would be idiotic to do. A company gets essentially free money from their affiliates. They take no risk and get marketers that are much smarter than the ones that are on the job market working for them. This is a dream for pretty much every company. Even Google has affiliate programs.

>Also, other affiliates will do whatever they can to sabotage your efforts.

This is like saying your fellow salesmen will sabotage your efforts.

Nope. Remember, people aren't against you, they are for themselves. Affiliates WILL copy what you are doing if you're successful, but that happens in sales as well. And who cares? The best will still be the best because they will come up with better things.

But this is irrelevant, because if you do what the parent comment says, they can't copy you unless they take control of your site.

>and trust me it will if you have success

Why should I trust you? What experience do you have? It sounds like you're exaggerating something you read somewhere.

This looks really close to something that I've been thinking of building. I think the market would be web developers who want to have a custom content site but don't want to wrangle with all of wordpress, because it's slow and there's too much boilerplate to write. A templating system that's easy to use, but also extensible when you need it.

I signed up for the beta, I look forward to testing it.

It's NOT a full time job, that's the whole point of walmart!

Walmart only employs part time employees for most of their positions, so they do not have to pay all the extra costs of a full time employee.

They have a system where every worker only works up to the part-time hour limits.

So the answer to all these people in the videos problems is get a second job, that is what my mother had to do. Instead they are lazy and work part time, then they take handouts because they aren't making enough.

For those that are skeptical about all this,

Look into Nitric Oxide.

Your veins / arteries produce it as a signaling molecule. When it is produced, your veins (I will use vein to reference both veins and arteries) expand. If you've ever exercised and seen your veins become larger, that is nitric oxide at work.

It also clears out the plaque "pockets" or "cysts" that form in your veins.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2050816/

If those pockets break open (the very thin inner lining of the vein breaks) and the plaque content gets into your bloodstream, it causes a heart attack because that plaque liquid causes your blood to clot, essentially make a big scab ball in your vein that blood can't get through, effectively depleting all the cells that rely on the blood from getting any oxygen or nutrients, killing the effected cells in minutes / hours if blood flow is not restored.

The problem with fat is that is really slows down nitric oxide production.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21903940

Because to produce nitric oxide, your veins need a couple ingredients. Lets call them A, B, and C.

A + B + C = Nitric Oxide

A B and C fit together like a puzzle. Well, fat has a molecule, lets call it D. That can ALSO combine with A and B to produce something else.

So picture this:

AAAAAA BBBBBBB CCCCCCCCCC DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

If those can randomly form to their produce ABC, or ABD, looking at the quantities above, which are you more likely to have, ABC or ABD?

ABD... Which is not nitric oxide... Which is not what we want!

This is why eating too much fat is not good. It really harms your arteries because you can't produce the stuff that's needed to clean them out and help them expand properly.

Unfortunately, "too much" is a relative term. Considering in this age that 1 table spoon of olive oil is all the oil found in 50 olives... The fat quantities we evolved for are waaaaay too low for what is so readily available now. This is why the MAJORITY of people have atherosclerosis. That is the condition of plaque built up in your veins, which leads to heart attacks, strokes, and your dick not working.

P.S. vegetables increase nitric oxide production (because they contain the "C" molecule)

P.P.S. you should buy L-Arginine (the "C" molecule) from Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013OVX3U/ref=as_li_ss_tl?... (affiliate link, I am thinking of selling it and this post is my MVP sales pitch).

Noxchi··on Larry Page: I’d Rather Leave My Billions to Elon Musk Than to Charity
Think of life and humans as a chemical reaction, like fire.

We consume and process things to make other things.

A tree by itself has limited value to a human, but if you process it into a house, it has a lot more value to a human.

Lets say you need 100 trees to make a house. 100 trees is worth $10,000.

A person with the job of chopping trees (a lumberjack) can cut down 300 a year, so they make $30,000 a year in income. Lets say the lumberjack wants to buy a house.

A house is worth $20,000 to him. He pays a firm to build him a house for $20,000. The firm buys 100 trees from someone for $10,000 and then turns them into a house for the lumberjack. That extra $10,000 they received is called "value add". They added value because humans (the employees of the firm) had to turn the wood into a house.

This is what the economy basically is, and you can be in two roles:

1: The resource extractor

2: The resource processor

Or in other words, you can be the wood or the flame.

How to do you make a big fire?

Get more and better resources (like wood and air)

Start fires in more places than one (parallel processing of the wood)

Start hotter fires (blowtorch vs a match)

Pretty much all of the above is controlled by laws and policy of the government. The citizenry are like the flame - they have innate, unfaltering properties. It is the role of the government (the person trying to build a big fire) to know these properties of the citizenry, and setup the right conditions so they burn their brightest.

First, lets establish what money is.

How much money you have is proportional to:

* How much value you create

* Your ability / willingness to monetize it

Now lets talk about why most artists are starving. These creatives are in the entertainment niche. Which is very different from the problem solving niche.

1. Entertainment is not a necessity, it is a luxury

2. Entertainment is a low-cost luxury[1]

3. This is a lot of competition in this niche. Remember how I said there are two types of products: Problem solving and Entertainment? Well the problem solving products only compete with other products that solve the same problem. In the entertainment niche, you are competing with every single other entertainment product. Your dopey little fantasy novel is competing with Call of Duty, 50 Cent, Angry Birds, Reddit, Flappy Bird, Facebook, Hacker News, and sex.

* 4. Given points 1 and 2, that means to make money, you HAVE to scale and be popular to many people[1]. Considering point 3, you have to have great content at the very least.

So I hope you can see why most content authors are starving is due to economics and their value creating ability, and not torrenting or spreading of knowledge.

I'm sure you know that the entertainment industry is a feast or famine one. The people on the top make all the money, and the people on the bottom make very little, simply because the barrier to entry for peoples attention is very high and only the best will get it (point 3).

If you're going to sell music, don't quit your day job unless you're sure you're going to be on the "feast" side of the equation.

*[1] Not necessarily. There is a growing model where you give content for free / low cost, then sell high priced ($1000+) goods to your rich, loyal fans (e.g. exclusive signed CDs, etc.).
