Notanothertoo··on Workers quit jobs in droves to become their own bosses
Does freelancing really beat faang employment and salary potential? I don't think so.
Notanothertoo··on FBI's ability to legally access secure messaging app content and metadata [pdf]
Or maybe because it's motives, and what level of capture they have over their 'customers'? Seems pretty simple to me. They have a monopoly of service and the only retribution people can take is political which means everything is done on appearance.
Notanothertoo··on German Court Rules Against Internet Security Non-Profit Quad9
Ironic because a lot of left leaning US folk think it is a utopia.

I think the culture around employment contracts preventing people from quiting when they want, penalty free, and the letter of recommendation requirements from a previous employer are insane. Seems like you would really have to go above and beyond to not get screwed on your next job by a bitter ex employer.

Also find the gov owning large shares in the private sector (Volvo.. Ect) to be a conflict of interest and may encourage them to bypass emissions laws for example.

Just seems like a lot of institutional trust.

Notanothertoo··on Sweden asks EU to ban Bitcoin mining...
Cause the euro is solid and isn't going anywhere... Greece like situations have been regulatory fixed and countries other than Germany are paying the bills.

Except not. The EU was desperate to find another financial supporter hence the failed bid calling for the death of the pound. That didn't happen, the euro is on its way out and has been.

Notanothertoo··on People buying SUVs are cancelling out climate gains from electric cars
Asking for over half of all Americans - what public transit?? Even in cities like Dallas it's totally not a feasible alternative to a vehicle.
Notanothertoo··on People buying SUVs are cancelling out climate gains from electric cars
Not comfortably...
Notanothertoo··on People buying SUVs are cancelling out climate gains from electric cars
That's not what your asking. If you can quantify externalities una suitable manner then do so and hold them responsible? If you can't and you decide to ban instead that tells us it's more about control than anything.
Notanothertoo··on Will real estate ever be normal again?
Not equity building, lack of control, and sometimes the "incentives" are off. For example a landlord wants the cheapest possible appliances. A renter wants features, quality and efficiency.. Also having no agency in the layout or functionality of the home is going to lead us all into misery. I don't understand how people think this is remotely OK.
Notanothertoo··on The Arguments That Persuaded 5th Circuit to Block OSHA Vaccine Mandate
Yes but it's easier for you to have an impact and escape or migrate away from corrupt state power vs federal power. Kind of proving the liberty argument here, your just not happy with it with this cause because you don't agree.

Notanothertoo··on Launch HN: Inflow (YC S21) – Self-help app for people with ADHD
yea but opt out auto annual renewal of 100$ is shady. Gtfo. You should let people actually trial the app or don't offer a trial. Also monthly subscriptions. If neither of those work then what value is our app actually offering?
Notanothertoo··on FTC Puts Hundreds of Businesses on Notice about Fake Reviews
Consumer reports kind of went down hill too. It was the solution though, I remember people paid good money for sun service.
Notanothertoo··on Part of Windows 11 is a revamped Windows Subsystem for Linux
I would not work until you got me a Mac. This poor soul.
Notanothertoo··on Blue light from monitors no danger to eyes or sleep

Notanothertoo··on Andrew Yang Founds the Forward Party
It's the nature of power, you have to sell your ethical standards to compete at this level. If you think someone is above it, they've just succeeded in their marketing.
Notanothertoo··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
Don't watch the news, I read it, never on fox. Don't want the vaccine because I was already infected. I lost my sense of smell for two weeks and slept a lot. Big deal. I don't want side effects of feeling shitty for a week after the vaccine and I don't think there has been enough time to study the side effects. The amount of propaganda and lack of an actual conversation on this fuels my cause. Additionally I don't trust the federal government to do anything other than spend money.
Notanothertoo··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
This is a very dangerous slope, especially because you are so willing to dismiss the conversation under the assumption that you know best/everything.

The lab leak is still not known or accepted by the wider public. Even after vanity fairs write up.

Thank the private free market.. /s it goes this way because the government involvement. If anyone else in another industry attempted the same thing they would be sued for fraud.
Notanothertoo··on Is America Inc getting less dynamic, less global and more monopolistic?
The gov has subsidized it at every level, including making it cheaper to send to shenghai than new York.
Notanothertoo··on Is America Inc getting less dynamic, less global and more monopolistic?
This is often intentional for tax reasons, see palintir and Spotify.
Notanothertoo··on Mozilla has defeated Microsoft’s default browser protections in Windows
Yep and as a Mac user with office your just left wondering why. Why on earth would I use one drive on Mac. One of the many reasons stopped using office on Mac. Rip excel.
Notanothertoo··on Terraform is currently not reviewing community pull requests
No, reading code is far easier than writing it. Either way both have go be done regardless of the author.
Notanothertoo··on How I re–over-engineered my home network for privacy and security
Terraform?
Notanothertoo··on How I re–over-engineered my home network for privacy and security
Eh, people who don't know tf/ansible say these things because they don't know the tool. When you know the tool it's no big deal and it's preferred for repeatability and its self documenting. People often think it's just good for complex things but infra as code solves a lot of problems. I use tf for my home lab because that's what I'm failure with and a homelab will inevitably get tinkered with or fall out of state. Same reason I use tf for everything infra as a dev consultant of 1. I'm not going to touch this thing for a while and when I do I want it to be repeatable and documented so I can move forward instead of back.

Also kubernetes is easy when using the right spin up tool, like portainer or rancher. It's also the only way to run docker images across multiple machine today. For a while I ran swarm but that's dead, then I just used docker compose but started running into compatibility issues. With kube you also get to leverage all the existing helm charts., which saves a lot of time.

It's still a bit overkill but a lot of fun, and I learned networking and infra things doing it on a homelab. I also use it to try new things.

There are also political reasons to do so. I suspect the internet will get less free and it's nice having your own private space.

In addition to the hypocrisy of the US gov, they have already held that switch for some time.

Notanothertoo··on Scylla – Real-Time Big Data Database
Been using it since 2017 for IoT time series data. Works great, very fast.

I think the one criticism is that it seems the company has some intentional rough edges on it, in favor of their SaaS over the open source release. It used to be around backing up and managing updates long term ect. They have gotten better but their helm chart for example is very opinionated and uses custom resources in place of say a statefulset. I think their SaaS is overpriced especially compared to reserved instances but that's just me.

Also from my calls with support, they lack direction internally. One time our sales rep and customer success director argued on the phone in front of us if they could bill us for some migration work. We silently let them finish and then said we expect it to be included in our support package based on their argument.
