NotATroll··on We are clueless about how long things should take
A lot of that looks less like issues with full-stack development, and more with start-up culture where everyone thinks they're google.

Scrum is pretty gross, I agree.

Typescript I'm unsure about, I typically stick to vanilla javascript with a polyfill for the fetch API. I kind of doubt it adds another 20% of workload.

Tooling, linters, and bundlers I mean. That's just programming in general tbh. Cmake is probably my greatest headache with C++.

> Deployement, done by a devops engineer? you must be joking right? That's also the work of the full-stack dev..

I don't know about fancy Kubernetes setups and what not. If you've scaled to that level then yeah, you probably need someone dedicated to things like deployment.

But for the most part I just use shell scripts, git, and make files for deploying our websites. Works pretty well.

NotATroll··on The Moral Peril of Meritocracy
> I can now usually recognize first- and second-mountain people. The former have an ultimate allegiance to self; the latter have an ultimate allegiance to some commitment. I can recognize first- and second-mountain organizations too. In some organizations, people are there to serve their individual self-interests — draw a salary. But other organizations demand that you surrender to a shared cause and so change your very identity. You become a Marine, a Morehouse Man.

The second mountain mindset sounds like a great mindset to get indoctrinated into a cult with. And what types of people are more likely to get indoctrinated into a cult? Those in what the article describes as the "valley". Those going through harsh times.

I'm not saying you should only serve yourself, but the mindset the author describes as the 2nd mountain is pretty terrifying.

Love is unconditional, but you still need to think for & about yourself. Also I'm not cleaning a room twice.

NotATroll··on My Talk at Microsoft
Yeah, but what on earth is the alternative?

Mobile gui's without javascript would be horrendous. On top of that, that's the platform you're minifying for.

I don't minify javascript to hide what's running, I minify it because a 3KB file is a lot less to download than a 12KB file.

So what? You design an entirely new language that: A) Can't be minified (How?) B) Has to be open source C) Can't be obfuscated (virtually impossible to prevent)

I'm sorry, but the stance is kinda dumb.

NotATroll··on Who cares about functional programming?
I dare say the reason many people are hesitant to adopt Functional programming is that:

A) They aren't, they're probably already programming in a functional programming style. Just not in a purely FP language (Which I would never adopt to begin with)

B) A lot of FP articles come off as the musings of zealots obsessed with monads, which often barely make any sense to, well, anyone. The less sense it makes at first glance, almost guarantees people will want to avoid it. Yes, maybe I can understand it. But I'm (hopefully) not the only maintainer of the codebase, and trying to communicate some FP concepts back & how to use them really, really isn't easy.

NotATroll··on Concerning ‘Remove Richard Stallman’
Don't forget the good old.

> The nominee is quoted as saying that if the choice of a sexual partner were protected by the Constitution, "prostitution, adultery, necrophilia, bestiality, possession of child pornography, and even incest and pedophilia" also would be. He is probably mistaken, legally--but that is unfortunate. All of these acts should be legal as long as no one is coerced. They are illegal only because of prejudice and narrowmindedness.

Just ctrl+f for necro. You'll find it.

NotATroll··on Going Fast Slowly
> why do complex overengineered systems still prevail despite all this?

Well for one, IDE's help hide a lot of the complexity by offering rapid auto-completion for even the most complex of systems.

For two, it's not something you can read and truly grasp. Complexity doesn't necessarily have an objective measurement. Even the attempts we have of measuring it, such as cyclomatic complexity, don't really tell a full story.

You could reduce a somewhat complex string manipulation down to a regex replace. But that regex replace may be far harder for someone to understand what it actually does, even if they're experienced with that particular flavor of regex.

To be blunt, 100 lines of code could be easier to understand than 25 lines that do the exact same thing. It just depends on the reader & the task at hand.

NotATroll··on Banks, Arbitrary Password Restrictions and Why They Don't Matter
> Do you really think the only thing the bank does to log people on is to check the username and password?

Yes. Yes I do. If you're putting arbitrary limitations on a user's password length, down to 6 characters even. I see no reason why you wouldn't be equally as insane with the rest of your system.

And, frankly speaking. The whole "you're locked out after 3 attempts" non-sense is complete crap. What is this now? We're supposed to believe databases don't get hacked into, and hashed passwords aren't leaked on the net for countless people to hack at and break?

This sentiment leads me to believe the passwords are stored in plaintext.

NotATroll··on Google Moves to Address Wage Equity, and Finds It’s Underpaying Many Men
I don't think that's realistic to try and implement at many people's places of work.

Stable incomes are essential for most people's sanity. Always being at risk of having projects shift away from work you do, and to work other people do directly conflicts with that stability most people are looking for. You could be spending an incredible amount of time trying to catch up with another project, while still maintaining your own, all the while having the looming threat of not being able to pay your bills over you head.

Freelancer type pay isn't for everyone.

Which goes back to that issue of not having an objective measurement to pay by.
