NoblePublius··on Tesla offers ‘Full Self-Driving’ option, prompting criticism from regulators
The Federal government in the United States does not require tax revenue to fund road construction. The only tax actually earmarked for this purpose is the gasoline tax, which is less than 2% of the Federal government’s appropriations for highway construction. Federal taxes are largely punitive and coercive (we want you to do this thing like have children, or live here, or not get too rich doing that thing because otherwise Lockheed lobbyists get upset).
NoblePublius··on Tesla offers ‘Full Self-Driving’ option, prompting criticism from regulators
there is no data whatsoever to suggest that autopilot is a net safety hazard. And The White House excluded tesla from their “American Made Electric Car” day. When asked why, Transportation Secretary Buttigieg said “this is not a luxury event.”

It’s just goes to show you how utterly false all alleged progressive politicians are. Tesla is singlehandedly solving climate change with sustainable energy but because it’s workers vote not to unionize, they must be stopped.

RyanAir is generally cheaper
NoblePublius··on Tesla offers ‘Full Self-Driving’ option, prompting criticism from regulators
Trains go from a place you don’t want to leave from to another place you don’t want to go at a time you don’t want to leave. Now imagine instead of rails, we built roads (much cheaper) only for autopilot vehicles (including busses or whatever proletarian fantasy you prefer). You’re welcome.
NoblePublius··on Tesla offers ‘Full Self-Driving’ option, prompting criticism from regulators
Does anyone actually believe that this sudden federal interest in autopilot is anything but lobbyist pressure from unionized legacy automakers?
NoblePublius··on [dead]
The biggest red flag to me when trying ProtonMail was that they opt you into password reset via SMS. How could my email be secure if my cell provider (ie, the government) owns the channel for resetting my password?
NoblePublius··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
Improper storage is a perfectly reasonable reason to void a warranty. This is accidental damage, and Dell sells a separate plan for that.
NoblePublius··on Teletransportation Paradox
In Star Trek, this is handled by the Heisenberg Compensator https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Heisenberg_compensator
NoblePublius··on Teletransportation Paradox
Matter/energy transportation (Star Trek style) would likely kill you and then create a clone of you at the destination that would think it is you. Dimensional transport (Stargate style) is the only type of teletransportation that I would consider. It might also be easier just to tell people to watch The Prestige to understand this.
NoblePublius··on Renting a car will be a pain until at least 2022
Somehow this article doesn’t mention Turo. There are a dozen Tesla Model 3s available to rent on Turo around LAX right now. Many less than $100/day.
NoblePublius··on England vaccine passport plans ditched, health secretary says
The official symptoms list of Long Covid, according to Mayo Clinic, includes “depression” and “headache and muscle pain” and “confusion.” This is lockdown-driven depression. If the virus had lingering physical effects, there would be tens of millions of sufferers seeking treatment, and there arent.

I think it’s BS for the biggest, most profitable companies in the world to subcontract vital work. It’s professional apartheid. If you’re a product manager, you deserve a FB.com email and a sushi bar in the office and the best benefits, but if you are an Accenture contractor that reports to that FB product manager, you get no benefits. For all the talk of pay equity that activists within these companies do, they are largely silent on the pay disparities between themselves and the outsourced contractors on which they are utterly dependent.
NoblePublius··on England vaccine passport plans ditched, health secretary says
How do you distinguish between the symptoms of “long covid” from the effects of being locked inside for a year? There have been over a billion covid infections globally (assume confirmed cases are 1/5 infections, which is a low estimate according to John’s Hopkins) so if “long covid” is so real, where are all these sufferers? If 1% have long covid, there should be at least ten million sufferers.
NoblePublius··on Facebook Censored Me For Mentioning Open-Source Social Network Mastodon
The biggest unreported scandal in big tech is the 100s of 1000s of contractors that work exclusively for these companies. Accenture provides thousands of content moderators to FB, none of whom have any recourse to FB HR or rights to pursue union status at FB. Google is the same.
NoblePublius··on As a virologist I’m shocked my work has been hijacked by anti-vaxxers
I see the prevalence of antivaxxers from two angles: the failure of public education and the reasonableness of medical skepticism. Understanding the differences between efficacy and effectiveness, infection and transmission, and cases and infections requires solid understanding of biological and statistical concepts that are not even covered in most high school biology and maths courses. And I haven’t even mentioned the basics of the immune system, germ theory, or the difference between a bacterium and a virus, or RNA and DNA. Most anti vaxxers seize upon the half truths cited here because they don’t even have half comprehension of the terms in use. Don’t blame them; blame your local school. Second, skepticism of institutional medical claims is perfectly reasonable. The Faucis of the world are the same types who told you that OxyContin is not addictive, that your child needs Ritalin, that your hysterical wife needs a lobotomy, that your unborn child needs thalidomide, and that it’s totally reasonable to purposefully infect African Americans with syphilis. The Faucis are ultimately responsible for this outbreak as it was their job to stop it in the first place; the Faucis of the world love mask mandates and lockdowns because it flips the narrative of responsibility from them (Fauci has had his job for almost 40 years; Trump was an intern by comparison) to us: cases are rising not because every epidemiologist knew they would rise but because YOU failed to wear a mask and had the audacity to go to your mother’s funeral in person. The vaccines are free, highly effective against serious disease of all variants, and universally available. Why are we saying anything but that, and why are any more restrictions needed given those facts?
NoblePublius··on Waymo has no viable business model
Because they don’t solve any real problems.
NoblePublius··on Waymo has no viable business model
“You don’t need lidar to drive a car, so why should the car need lidar to drive the car?” -Elon Musk, like six years ago

I’m sure George Hotz also has some pithy takes on this.

Anyway, this all completely misses the point. Waymo was born of a DARPA challenge and continued to exist to search for even more DoD money. But we don’t need self driving tanks when we can pilot them remotely.

NoblePublius··on Googlespeak – How Google limits thought about antitrust
I was expecting some analysis of what you tweeted to the Google people that was outside their vocabulary.
NoblePublius··on Plasma Kinetics May Revolutionize Hydrogen Storage for EVs
Ok cool now compress and store and transport it after you spend $10 trillion on the infrastructure to do that at planet scale. Or, send electricity into batteries over wires which already exist. Like, come on. You have to choose which energy innovator to back and you go with Tesla or the people pushing hydrogen (Shell, Exxon)?
NoblePublius··on Plasma Kinetics May Revolutionize Hydrogen Storage for EVs
There is no naturally occurring source of Hydrogen. It can only be produced at industrial scale by cracking it from carbon fuel (usually CNG). If a viable pathway was created to produce it via electrolysis with sustainable energy, you’d be 10x better off (in terms of overall efficiency and carbon footprint) by putting that energy in a battery. STOP TRYING TO MAKE HFCS HAPPEN. They’re a carbon scam!
NoblePublius··on Tests show all driver assist systems can be fooled
It’s not possible to watch Netflix on your Tesla screen when the car is not in park. If you want to construct a Rube Goldberg device on your steering wheel so you can watch Netflix on your iPhone in the passenger seat, you have bigger problems than crashing.
NoblePublius··on Tests show all driver assist systems can be fooled
Why? The only people doing this are “journalists” seeking clicks (or attacking Tesla on behalf of unions or unionized auto makers) or TikTokkers making fake videos.
NoblePublius··on Tests show all driver assist systems can be fooled
You obviously don’t own a Tesla. This isn’t possible.
NoblePublius··on Tests show all driver assist systems can be fooled
So what? This is the most absurd line of inquiry. Did you know that seat belts don’t work if you don’t put them on? The question is not can something be circumvented. The question is if the system is safe. There is no evidence presented here to suggest driver assist systems are a net hazard.
NoblePublius··on The death of the ‘Millionaire Next Door’ dream
A 32 inch LCD TV was $15,000 when I was in high school; today it is $79. Encyclopedia Britannica was $8000; today Wikipedia has more content and is more accurate and is instantly and universally accessible to everyone everywhere through a pocket-sized device obtainable for $100 and $20/month.
NoblePublius··on The emergence of heat and humidity too severe for human tolerance (2020)
Many more humans die of cold exposure than heat exposure each year. Less extreme cold + more extreme heat would possibly, if not likely, lead to many fewer human deaths. https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5...
NoblePublius··on The death of the ‘Millionaire Next Door’ dream
there have never been more millionaires and there have never been more children of millionaires, to say nothing of the fact that the average laborer can afford things today that the average millionaire could not afford ten or twenty years ago.
NoblePublius··on Drunk-driver detectors for cars mandated in infrastructure bill
How about we mandate alcoholism detectors in liqour bottles instead?
NoblePublius··on NYC to mandate proof of vaccination for many indoor settings
This from the same policy makers who proclaim Voter ID laws to be racist.

This is ID to eat food.

NoblePublius··on FB users buying Oculus VR headsets to get customer service prioritization
If the moral of the story is that you only get customer service when you are an actual customer, I say, yeah, duh.
