NoSorryCannot··on Barbie Typewriter (2015)
Barbie and typewriters already have nothing to do with each other.
NoSorryCannot··on The Water Wars Come to the Suburbs
They're not small towns. Suburban homes very often have no commercial activity in close proximity. You have to drive somewhere else to do just about anything.

Small towns haven't historically been built like that.

NoSorryCannot··on It's quite hard to lose a Duolingo streak
Duolingo can absolutely get you reading and listening. Which is let's say half the battle.

I think it's too dramatic to say it's a "real problem" with it! Anybody who intends to become fluent in a language is going to need to practice actually speaking and writing.

NoSorryCannot··on Ask HN: Where have all the forums gone?
Google will choose shoddily-generated blogspam of no use to anyone and I will append "reddit" to my query, doubly ruling out small forums.
NoSorryCannot··on Tell HN: Brother printers now locking out non-OEM paraphernalia
They do it for the same reason as anything else: to charge different prices in different parts of the world and still stymie the gray market.
NoSorryCannot··on Investigating the effects of bike lanes in Minneapolis
There are tatters of bike lanes which makes it hard to assemble a route without going through very uncomfortable traffic situations. Drivers are really, uh, spirited and unpredictable, as well.

So they're not well-used yet, which some are taking as a signal that we should foreclose on the entire idea before it even truly gets started.

San Diego needs to reconsider the design of virtually all of its surface roads. They're designed for 45mph traffic but the signs ask politely, maybe 25mph instead? Which everyone ignores.

NoSorryCannot··on Ask HN: What are some mentally healthy apps to have?
Fascinating. Books can qualify as passive consumption but duolingo categorically cannot be!
NoSorryCannot··on Alexa, why have you charged me £2 to say the Hail Mary?
It's an interesting example because the question is very easy for a person to understand but giving an actual answer would take some time, but you can invert those for an AI.

But at least a human would give a reasonable answer, like "looks like at least thirty miles" or even just "I don't know". Your phone will instead say, oops, I didn't quite get that, try again later ( goodbye chime ). Which is terrible.

NoSorryCannot··on I'm retiring from the engineering profession
This is a conspicuously narrow view on what politics are.

A professional association or licensing board or whatever similar structure, regardless of whether or not it is embedded in government, is textbook political.

That's entirely separate from the issue of whether or not they exercise restraint and engage constructively when their credibility is challenged.

NoSorryCannot··on Change the colour of grey text back to black on website using poor contrast text
Is the maximum contrast always the most accessible, for all people?

No, it isn't. This is not like a wheelchair ramp.

NoSorryCannot··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone
Are you saying hipsterism can't be very good because it didn't scale?
NoSorryCannot··on 1M bartenders have to be certified in California by July 1
OLCC has a sanctioned monopoly on distributing hard liquor in the state and they constrain liquor sales more than CA though less than say UT.
NoSorryCannot··on Be Real – App that notifies friends simultaneously to capture and share a photo
Not really a great perspective on casual conversations with friends.
NoSorryCannot··on Long-term benzodiazepine use causes synapse loss and cognitive deficits in mice
Most doctors don't run a business.
NoSorryCannot··on Record-breaking camera keeps everything between 3 cm and 1.7 km in focus
Raw camera data requires an interpretation to be displayed on a monitor at all and usually needs a lot of processing to produce a natural-looking photo on the screen. Demosaicing at the very least but gamma curve correction, color response correction, etc. as well.
NoSorryCannot··on Shaving is an example of how consumer products extract more money
First time hearing such a critique of traveling light and not wanting to wait to check and claim bagagge, or pay extra for it.

You can check weapons so no, I don't think a razor is going to be such a big deal.

NoSorryCannot··on Mechanical Watch
The pattern is extremely common on CDNs that serve JS.
NoSorryCannot··on How rare is a Supreme Court breach? Very rare
Overly dramatic. A lot of countries that are still countries have completely rewritten their constitutions a few times over.
NoSorryCannot··on USPS sued by states and environmental groups over purchase of 8.6 mpg trucks
It just NEEDS to. You have a feeling about it!
NoSorryCannot··on There Is No CD Revival
And jewel cases were and are garbage.
NoSorryCannot··on The FDA is proposing a ban on menthol cigarettes
Let me rephrase, market growth is not _as_ important as community health and market growth is only desirable insofar as it improves community outcomes.

Market growth for tobacco products is not important, full stop.

NoSorryCannot··on The FDA is proposing a ban on menthol cigarettes
I think we need to be less concerned with individual responsibility because it isn't as effective at improving community outcomes and it encourages people to be callous and uncharitable.

Strict individual responsibility had been the rule for cigarette smoking before and it was not successful.

Market growth is not so important.

NoSorryCannot··on The new golden age of wildlife in New England
It's implied that they meant surveillance cameras.
NoSorryCannot··on M1 Thunderbolt ports don’t fully support USB 3.1 Gen 2
You can have arbitrarily many, so long as the serial lanes are independent of each other. PCIe can have lots, for example. Because they are independent, they won't suffer from clockskew problems that made parallel signaling impractical at high speeds and it's often not required to connect all of the wires (e.g. an x16 card hanging out of an x8 or smaller slot) .
NoSorryCannot··on Notable items missing from English Wikipedia
Hmmm...

NoSorryCannot··on The Colorado Safety Stop is the law of the land
I'm a big believer in letting different conveyances enjoy their superpowers. Cars can transport you at 80mph with a cage and climate control, motorcycles can lane split and filter, and bicycles have better environmental awareness (importantly because they are slow and can hear) and are less likely to cause serious injury or property damage so they can ride where cars and motorcycles cannot.

They're not the same and we don't have to give them exactly the same rules. In fact, we never have.

NoSorryCannot··on The Caves of Mars (2019)
The difference of 1atm between sea level and the void doesn't tend to yield violent explosions and has been survived. It's not remotely going to resemble a diving bell accident or something. A small puncture and large volume will give time to respond before disaster.
NoSorryCannot··on Apple forced to allow sideloading and 3rd-party app stores under new EU law
Smartphones are general-purpose devices not just in potential but in practice. I think we're beyond pretending that they are just phones.
NoSorryCannot··on Java 18 / JDK 18: General Availability
I don't know, why do you?

There are occasionally breaking changes but most old jars out there will run fine in the latest runtime, so the answer to your question is going to depend on how squirrely your use case is.

NoSorryCannot··on Google will soon ask Australian users to show ID to view some content
Right, but I think the concept of a national ID necessarily has the property of everyone (as close as is feasible) having one because it is required and they should be stable across time. Passports are optional, they expire, and they aren't stable. Not everyone can get an American passport (e.g., non-citizens).

Tax IDs are as close as we've got.
