NickHaflinger··on Blowing the Whistle on the UC Berkeley Mathematics Department
Alexander Coward: 'My student evaluations for the two classes I had completed were the highest on record in the Mathematics Department'

Berkeley Mathematics Department: ".. I hope and expect that you will be able to align more with our standards for the remainder of this semester and during the next academic year."

Translation: Your students are doing significiently better than ours and therefore showing up our mediocre teaching performance and for that reason - you're fired ..

NickHaflinger··on A Thorough Study of Chromium Blink's Memory in Real-World Websites
Most of IE is part of the operating system and get loaded at boot, rendering such memory test moot.
NickHaflinger··on Why Do High-Frequency Traders Cancel So Many Orders?
Because they're gaming the market. How it works: place a large order, wait for others to make a bid, then cancel the order and sell your own at a mark-up.
NickHaflinger··on Shinichi Mochizuki and the impenetrable proof
Wasn't this a plot device in 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy', where they gave some scientist an award on the off-chance what he said even made sense.
NickHaflinger··on A Criminal Mind – Why did a respected psychiatrist became a drug dealer?
Did anyone else find the prose style overblown, turgid and treacly, a bit like a cross between Tom Wolf, John Updike and Dame Beryl Bainbridge :)
NickHaflinger··on CloudFlare Route leak
I have noticed that certain online media have been sluggish or timing out lately. A bit of a bad advertisement for us all to move to the 'cloud' ..
NickHaflinger··on Why are working class kids less likely to get elite jobs? They study too hard
"Why are working class kids unlikely to get elite jobs?"

Because they don't have rich dads who'll get their rich friends to give them the jobs ..

NickHaflinger··on The Inside Story Behind MS08-067
If you mean Windows 3.1 running over Novell Netware and Trumpet Winsock then it did indeed bring networked ease of use computing to the masses :)
NickHaflinger··on Schlumberger is building a proprietary OS for its oilfield services
“It is similar to an operating system used on your mobile phone,”

Well that's the technical bits out of the way :)

NickHaflinger··on The Apple bias is real
Said a biased anti Apple article. If a media blitz by a huge company ever created a market, then where's the Zune or Windows Phone? What makes Apple successful is that they make stuff people want to buy. Not on the opinions of some techno journalist. What stunt will Apple pull next, act to maintain high profit margins?
NickHaflinger··on The Dukes: 7 years of Russian cyber-espionage
No serious security researcher used 'cyber' in a sentence ..
NickHaflinger··on UK spy boss warns of technology terror risk
What a load of technology terror BS ..
NickHaflinger··on Child Arrested Because Adults Are Stupid
It seems to me and in this day-and-age, the teachers were desperate to not be sanctioned over a violation of some rule.
NickHaflinger··on Windows 3.1 beta crashed on 3rd-party DOS
Win3.1 didn't crash, what it did do was throw up a fake error msg if you tried to install it on DR-DOS.

"drdos has problems running windows today. And I assume will have more problems in the future"

"You should make sure it has problems in the future :)"

NickHaflinger··on WebGL graphical shader tribute to Ryoji Ikeda
Works here on a Ubuntu desktop ..
NickHaflinger··on Understanding Hitler’s Anti-Semitism
Understanding Hitler’s anti-semitism? You could start with the most Holy Office of the Inquisition and work your way forward. Most all nation states were virulently Anti-Semitism to varying degrees.
NickHaflinger··on I, Mr. Robot: Software, Dystopia, and the View from 2005
Very little speculative fiction could in any way be described as accurately depicting the future. Having said that, what do you think of 'Max Headroom', set twenty minutes into the future.

NickHaflinger··on The Lawyer Who Defended Dzhokhar Tsarnaev
What really puzzles me is why in the aftermath of the bombing, the Tsarnaev brothers drove round Boston for three whole days in a car registered to their home address and only got caught after being recognized by a police officer and fellow gym member, less than a mile from the outrage. We could ask Dzhokhar Tsarnaev except, he was shot in the throat/caused a self inflicted knife wound and spent most of the trial in a drug induced haze.
NickHaflinger··on Dawn of a Revolution (2013)
The man is a visionary who - like Moses coming down from the mountain - single handed introduced desktop computing to the world. /s
NickHaflinger··on GM crops created superweed, say scientists (2005)
'What happened is that the gene construct seems to have jumped from Brassica to charlock in a single plant, which wasn't able to produce seed.'

"The new form of charlock was growing among many others in a field which had been used to grow GM rape. When scientists treated it with lethal herbicide it showed no ill-effects."

Brian Johnson isn't mentioned in the linked to article ..

NickHaflinger··on DDoS attacks are getting more powerful as the Pentagon scrambles for solutions
And what exactly is the Pentagon going to bring to the table, since the root cause of DDOS attacks are all those compromised Windows desktop computers out there on the Internet.
NickHaflinger··on Online streaming sites and URL obfuscation

NickHaflinger··on A Concrete Sample Was Pulled from the New Panama Canal Locks

NickHaflinger··on Defeating CryptoLocker Attacks with ZFS
> What does ZFS have to do with this?

Presumably ZFS is immune from CryptoLocker. CryptoLocker can only compromise NTFS 'computers'.

NickHaflinger··on Defeating CryptoLocker Attacks with ZFS
Wouldn't it be simpler to design a 'computer' that can't be hacked by opening an email attachment or clicking on a URL.
NickHaflinger··on Windows Symbolic Link Mitigations
"There are three types of symbolic links .. Object Manager Symbolic Links, Registry Key Symbolic Links and NTFS Mount Points .. a fourth type, NTFS Symbolic Links"

How did Unix ever manage with only the one type of symbolic link

NickHaflinger··on The One-Man, $1.2B ETF Shop
WTF !!!
NickHaflinger··on A New Computer Glitch Is Rocking the Mutual Fund Industry
'Microsoft and SunGard Alliance'

'As is demonstrated by the IntelliMatch Operational Control Windows 8, SunGard is innovating utilizing Microsoft technology to build mission-ciriticaal solutions for the global financial services community'

NickHaflinger··on The Advanced Persistent Threat You Have: Google Chrome [pdf]
total FUD .. nothing gets updated here unless I want it to. And why isn't the Microsoft software updater or your AV updater considered an equal threat. Who paid for this 'study'.
