Nicholas_C··on I've overlayed stays on a light pollution satellite map
I noticed that as well, it’s gas flaring from O&G production. You can see similar patches south of San Antonio (the Eagle Ford shale) and in West Texas (the Permian Basin) and probably a few other spots too.
Nicholas_C··on Archaeologists extract DNA of ancient Israelites
Not the OP but I’m guessing that it’s because humans in Africa were isolated in thousands of communities/regions for hundreds of thousands of years and evolved separately. Meanwhile the diaspora outside of Africa spread via select communities in a much shorter time. Somewhat counterintuitive.
Nicholas_C··on Effect of breathwork on stress and mental health: A meta-analysis of RCTs
Here is a good one guided by Wim Hof himself: https://youtu.be/tybOi4hjZFQ?si
Nicholas_C··on Effect of breathwork on stress and mental health: A meta-analysis of RCTs
+1 for Stamina, I use this app for apnea training for surfing. Wim Hof also produces a similar calming feeling, there are some good guided Wim Hof videos on youtube that are easy to follow.
Nicholas_C··on Study finds influence of smaller jersey numbers on perception
I remember my teammates being extremely picky about which numbers they’d wear and I always caught grief for wearing #8 as a running back since it’s thought of as a QB number (Troy Aikman, Steve Young). In hindsight maybe they were on to something.
Nicholas_C··on A venture-backed startup has quietly bought more than 80 mom-and-pop shops
A browser add in that replaces article titles with a factual summary based on the content of the articles would be pretty neat.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: Bought a SaaS company, it's going down 2% per month
This is my suggestion as well. Send surveys and/or personal emails to folks who uninstall and try to find a pattern - it could be a simple tweak or feature add that people want.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: What does a newbie need to know in order to avoid AWS cost disasters?
Can’t you set spending limits on AWS which should solve this? What other services have better functionality to avoid blowing up spend?
Nicholas_C··on InfluxDB Cloud shuts down in Belgium; some weren't notified before data deletion
I haven’t seen a reason yet but I suspect they’re reducing the regions they’re hosting in to save costs.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: What are your favorite internet rabbit holes?
If only StumbleUpon was still around...
Nicholas_C··on Goodreads was the future of book reviews, then Amazon bought it
There are certainly ways, I switched to a Kobo reader instead of a Kindle and haven’t bought a book off Amazon in years.
Nicholas_C··on Apple co-founder sells Carmel Valley ranch, will become nature preserve
Success has a thousand fathers but failure is an orphan.
Nicholas_C··on 11 years of hosting a SaaS
I see Render being mentioned on HN quite a bit as the new Heroku. I’m still using Heroku for my personal projects but have been meaning to check Render out.
Nicholas_C··on An Example of a Sad Google Account Recovery Failure and Its Effects
Where/how do you backup your takeout data?
Nicholas_C··on The regenerating power of Big Basin’s redwoods
This makes me sad because I moved to the Bay Area in 2021 and to me Big Basin is just a large burnt out piece of land. I spend a lot of time down there surfing and I don’t think the park has even reopened.
Nicholas_C··on Businesses are in for a mighty debt hangover
This works great until it doesn’t. Interest rates are rising and debt isn’t as cheap as it was. At some point it will be unsustainable but we just don’t know when. I fear that we will push the limits on this until it’s too late.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: What's your favorite GPT powered tool?
Not the OP but good to know. How does 4 compare to Bard?
Nicholas_C··on Kudzu, the vine that never ate the south (2015)
>Still, along Southern roads, the blankets of untouched kudzu create famous spectacles. Bored children traveling rural highways insist their parents wake them when they near the green kudzu monsters stalking the roadside. “If you based it on what you saw on the road, you’d say, dang, this is everywhere,” said Nancy Loewenstein, an invasive plants specialist with Auburn University.

This was my experience as a child. We'd drive by groups of huge pines completely engulfed by kudzu and my mother would tell me it grew so fast you could see it grow with your own eyes. Scary stuff, I imagined the entire country overtaken by kudzu someday.

Nicholas_C··on “Rich man vs. fisherman on beach” is a flawed parable
The takeaway of this parable isn’t that we should all become fishermen, it’s that we should slow down a bit and work to live instead of live to work.
Nicholas_C··on The last days of a 350-year-old family farm
Source? Sounds interesting.
Nicholas_C··on Geography of Kansas (2022)
They say Kansas is so flat you can watch your dog run away for three days before you lose sight of him.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
Pretty simple but saved me a lot of time: using Twilio, Google maps API, and PythonAnywhere I would send myself a text if my normal route to work would take >n minutes.
Nicholas_C··on WWE Agrees to Merge with UFC
I’m still not sure this isn’t an April Fool’s joke. The cross pollination between these two organizations that will be jammed down fans’ throats will be insufferable.
Nicholas_C··on Giving kids no autonomy at all has become a parenting norm
Scrolled way down to find this answer. I also think this is the primary cause. If you have one kid you’ll be way more protective than if you have four.
Nicholas_C··on Cadillac Ranch
I went to college in Lubbock. It was a great time but man West Texas can be a strange place, it’s hard to describe.
Nicholas_C··on 43 Hours on the Amtrak Southwest Chief
In college my friend and I took the Amtrak from Austin, TX to NYC for New Year’s Eve. The journey took 50 hours riding in coach plus an 8 hour layover in Chicago. Amazing memories and a fun way to see the country.
Nicholas_C··on Show HN: Search inside 15,000 pitchdeck slides
Wow, very cool! I’m building almost the exact same thing but for public company investor relations decks as a side project. My use case stemmed from building decks in investment banking, very similar to yours.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: What would you do if you didn't have to work?
There is a decent amount of surf on the gulf, especially if you like to longboard. I surfed ~50 days a year while living in Houston.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
> - TCU wins the CFP.

Most unlikely thing on here.

Nicholas_C··on Reddit's favorite products in one place
A good example of this is the Reddit post below. The post looks somewhat natural but if you read the text critically it sounds very suspicious. This post had 8k+ upvotes and only a few comments calling it out at the very bottom of the thread that most people would never see.
