Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: What game have you replayed more times than any other?
I don’t use any mods, I’m a pretty casual player but maybe I should look into some.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: When and why did you start believing in God?
Q: How can you tell if someone is an atheist?

A: Don’t worry, they’ll tell you.

Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: What game have you replayed more times than any other?
Sim City 4 and Civilization 5. Both are timeless and I still play them a few times a year. Hard to believe Sim City 4 is over 20 years old.
Nicholas_C··on Claude for Small Business
If they’re just using excel or their LLM vibe coded its own double entry accounting system this is a pretty bad idea.
Nicholas_C··on Kindle to end store downloads and registering for 1st-5th gen kindles in May
In my post I said "this kind of stuff" which also includes their DRM policies (which is the real reason they are ending the users' kindle support).
Nicholas_C··on Kindle to end store downloads and registering for 1st-5th gen kindles in May
This kind of stuff is why I no longer use a kindle. I use a kobo which IMHO is not as good of a product but it's worth not supporting this behavior.
Nicholas_C··on Why do SF billboards hit different?
Houston has quite a few software company billboards. It’s just that in SF it’s 100% software billboards so it’s really noticeable.
Nicholas_C··on Show HN: Will my flight have Starlink?
I'm surprised he would admit that publicly on a podcast.
Nicholas_C··on GPT-5.4
The HN of old is no more unfortunately. Things get up or down voted based purely on political alignment.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: Any real OpenClaw (Clawd Bot/Molt Bot) users? What's your experience?
Maybe it has always been this way but it seems like these days it's only a matter of time before anyone "authentic" (or at least seems authentic at first) turns into some type of grifter. If you have a big enough following there is too much money to be made not to grift.
Nicholas_C··on Clawdbot - open source personal AI assistant
There are a lot of people with incentives to hype the AI industry (VCs, founders, CEOs, internet personalities that need clicks, people that sell courses, etc). Last week everyone was hyping Claude Cowork, this week it's Clawdbot. Don't get me wrong I think there are a lot of cool things going on but there is a lot of hype (similar to the original internet bubble).
Nicholas_C··on Theft of 'The Weeping Woman' from the National Gallery of Victoria
Agreed. If no one uses gymnastics to traverse a laser filled room it's actually pretty lame.
Nicholas_C··on How I bypassed Amazon's Kindle web DRM
I switched to kobo for a while but I thought the hardware itself was inferior. Maybe they fixed it but I couldn’t dim the screen low enough to not annoy my wife while she tried to sleep. It felt cheaper too. I begrudgingly switched back to my old kindle.
Nicholas_C··on Thoughts on Mechanical Keyboards and the ZSA Moonlander
My work laptop and personal laptop are the same model for this reason. Switching between two different keyboard layouts is very frustrating.
Nicholas_C··on Croatian freediver held breath for 29 minutes
Not the OP but I used to do breathe hold training for surfing and bought a pulse oximeter. I don’t think I ever got below 90%.
Nicholas_C··on Solar-plus-storage technology is improving quickly
That is much higher than I would have expected. Good news. What are they using to charge the batteries though? I wonder if it's offpeak renewables or mostly natural gas?
Nicholas_C··on The German Works Council has blocked Amazon's performance reviews
Counterpoint: some people are just better at their jobs than others
Nicholas_C··on The AIpocalypse is here for web sites as search referrals plunge
How would LLMO and SEO strategies differ?
Nicholas_C··on The AIpocalypse is here for web sites as search referrals plunge
Are those passionate/nerdy people still running niche websites? A search engine that prioritizes that kind of content would be great.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: Startup getting spammed with PayPal disputes, what should we do?
When we were having our stolen card testing it was from people using made up gmail handles and ELV handled those easily. I guess it views temp-mail emails (and probably others) as real, which is unfortunate.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: Startup getting spammed with PayPal disputes, what should we do?
We had the same issue (people testing stolen credit card numbers) on Stripe that was close to getting us shut off for a certain credit card company. We implemented a captcha and a tool to validate email addresses (emaillistverify) and it solved the problem.
Nicholas_C··on Show HN: I made a free tool that analyzes SEC filings and posts detailed reports
Pretty cool, reminds me of content from SeekingAlpha.

I'm trying to do something unrelated with public companies, where did you get a list of all companies filing with the SEC? Or was it built based on whoever filed 8-Ks? A google search leads me to this list [0] but it's missing a few companies.

Nicholas_C··on Wealthy Americans have death rates on par with poor Europeans
Not surprising given our diet and car-dependent culture.

From the article:

>While less access to health care and weaker social structures can explain the gap between the wealthy and poor in the US, it doesn't explain the differences between the wealthy in the US and the wealthy in Europe, the researchers note. There may be other systemic factors at play that make Americans uniquely short-lived, such as diet, environment, behaviors, and cultural and social differences.

Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: How do you handle VAT / Sales Tax accounting as B2C SaaS?
>It's my understanding that solutions like Stripe Tax, Alavara, Quaderno, etc. only help collect the necessary data (which I consider the easier part, at least for digital goods), but do not handle the registration & filing (though I've learned that Quaderno will support filing Sales Tax in the US on your behalf soon).

That's right. Stripe recently acquired TaxJar which you can use to connect to Stripe Tax and file U.S. sales taxes. In my limited experience implementing sales tax I found that Avalara did not work well with Stripe right out of the box.

Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: How do you handle VAT / Sales Tax accounting as B2C SaaS?
If you ever want to sell your company the purchase price will be discounted by the amount of sales tax liabilities you have (source: have seen this happen). It's easier to get ahead of it and start collecting and filing sales taxes now so there isn't a growing sales tax liability.

That said, depending on how big OP's company is it might be below sales tax thresholds in most/all jurisdictions.

Nicholas_C··on Smartphone buyers meh on AI, care more about battery life
Sounds a little like crypto although there are actual use cases for AI. Just not as many as investors think.
Nicholas_C··on Ask HN: What's the "best" book you've ever read?
I loved any and all Gary Paulsen books. This one was so unique and I still think about it from time to time as well. I’m due for a reread.
Nicholas_C··on Launch HN: Silurian (YC S24) – Simulate the Earth
Agent based modeling (ABM) is an attempt at this. I've wanted to forecast the economy on a per-person basis since playing Sim City as a kid (although Sim City is not an ABM to be clear). From doing a bit of research a while back it seemed like the research and real world forecasting have been done on a pretty small scale and nothing as grand as I'd hoped. It's been a while since I've looked into so I would be happy to be corrected.
Nicholas_C··on Old Easter Island genomes show no sign of a population collapse
And then after the slave raiders a Scottish sheep farm was established and they confined all the natives to one small area (Hanga Roa). The population is now highly mixed and only about half the current population are of Polynesian descent. They still have a surprising amount of traditions and knowledge recorded although the language is at risk of dying out. I visited Rapa Nui a few years back and it is an incredible place. The locals have been able to mostly resist commercialization of the island which I really appreciated. There is one "fancy" hotel on the island and the locals have put up a bunch of signs in protest[0] which I presume are still there today.

Nicholas_C··on The Gitlab Team Handbook
As a finance leader I use this as a reference occasionally. I can imagine it’s a pain to keep updated for the team but it’s nice to have this available.
