We will finally achieve the dream of everything being in public domain!
I switched critical systems to illumos and BSD years ago and it's been smooth sailing ever since. Nowadays there really is no need to contribute to linux monoculturization whatsoever.
At $work I'm running SmartOS servers with GPU passing to a ubuntu bhyve for the occasional CUDA compute and it works wonderfully. Wonder if similar could be possible with Helios?
By doing on-prem private installation of it [0]. Support contract is not necessary. We run illumos on HPe hardware from Gen6 to Gen10 and there are no issues. Even have GPU compute going via passthrough to ubuntu bhyve HVM.
If running an OS that supports docker...
At least with Oxide there is a glimmer of hope for a better future in this regard.
We run Triton and SmartOS in production and the linux compatibility works via lx-zones just fine. Only some of the linux-locked software, which usually means docker, needs to go inside a bhyve VM.
It still doesn't change the fact that putting all eggs to one penguin-shaped basket give me the heebie-jeebies. Monoculturization is never a good thing, yet everyone seems to run towards it with a glee on linux.
At least I can put money where my mouth is and continue budgeting for Juniper as long as they support FreeBSD.
At least the FreeBSD Junos still runs on the devices on top of KVM. I just can't understand why they didn't go for jails/bhyve or illumos zones instead.
The original BSD release will stay open and free for everyone to utilize.
