Nerdfest··on Electrical failure cuts power to all of Argentina and Uruguay, supplier says
It thought the opposite was in progress now, with external actors doing deep scans on electrical infrastructure in the US. Regardless of direction, if I were to start a conspiracy theory, I'd point out that testing in a country that already has poor infrastructure would be great cover.

Seriously though, I'd think it would be trivial to figure out if this was failure or malice.

Nerdfest··on Sign In with Apple [video]
As the people above mentioned, look for one that supports a catch-all address. It makes it very easy to manage. You can even respond using a real "DoNotReply" account and the alias as the "replyto" address for the rare occasions you do want to reply. Yes, Google Apps does this well, but there must be others.
Nerdfest··on Sign In with Apple [video]
It's a pretty easy product to land when you control the hardware, the OS, the developers, and to a large extent, the users.

Google doesn't sell your data. They sell adds to companies that they show to you. The companies never see your data, and it's effectively Google's most valuable resource. They have far more reason to keep it safe than Apple. Doesn't Apple sell ads as well, btw?

Also, you may want to check the news about Apple selling data ...

Get your own domain through someone that has an email service that supports aliases. Every sign up can have a different address. It's like $10 per year and you're email is not at the mercy of whatever mega-corporation owns your email.
Nerdfest··on Why play a music CD? No ads, no privacy terrors, no algorithms
That's what I'm using. A central machine (that has an output to main audio system), with it being controllable from anywhere using various MPD clients. I tried to go the streaming route with MPD to enable music to be played in multiple rooms, but it was very finicky and susceptible to network problems. Instead, another output of the main machine goes to an FM transmitter, and any other audio system can pick it up. The sound quality is not pristine, but it's acceptable. Music in any room, all properly synced and centrally controllable.
Nerdfest··on EFF Wins National Security Letter Transparency Lawsuit
Great idea, but a much shorter time-frame would be in order, especially for something that really is unconstitutional.
Nerdfest··on Tesla Model 3 vs. BMW M3 [video]
There is a maximize button.
Nerdfest··on Google Is Eating Our Mail
I think it should, or some sort of oversight should be in place. Their filters are extremely aggressive. I have a specific GMail rule in place to ensure that all mail gets through and nothing gets sent to spam, but even with that the occasional message gets sent to spam. It's generally advertising, but never actually spam.

There's definitely for GMail to become the new "Windows", with everyone else fighting to stay connected.

Nerdfest··on Chinese spies stole trade secrets from Dutch chip machine maker ASML: report
Well, I"m almost happy about the steel recipes. I'm getting really tired of Chinese-made screws and bolts that almost seem to be made of plastic.
Nerdfest··on DHS, FBI say election systems in all 50 states were targeted in 2016
One person with a USB key can change many votes on a single machine.
Nerdfest··on France’s Message for Capitalism: Adapt or Die
I'm quite amazed it's taken this long. Of course, it hasn't actually happened yet either. If fair taxation alone were in place, the standard of living would be significantly better in pretty much any country.
Nerdfest··on Dropbox ignores how roaming is the new normal, refuses to protect photos
Is Condoleezza Rice still on the board of directors? She had a fairly strong anti-privacy stance.
Nerdfest··on A Tiny Screw Shows Why iPhones Won’t Be ‘Assembled in U.S.A.’
But, it doesn't say so.

You just used Apple and the word "standards" in a sentence without the requisite "eschews".
Nerdfest··on Trump accepts deal for temporary end to painful shutdown
You say that like reality is a significant factor in many people's decisions.
Nerdfest··on Landlords forcing smart locks on tenants
I like doing it to corporate security folks after they try to dictate it in authentication systems. They usually seem to understand after it's done to them.
Nerdfest··on Apple's warning is a bad omen for Wall Street bulls
I'm not really sure why this has anything to do with "Wall Street". Just because something changes for one company doesn't mean it's a trend. Apple is in trouble because they pushed their prices beyond where even the ardent fans will buy it without thinking.

This big thing though is the amount of free advertising they're getting as the darlings of the media has dropped drastically. This is a huge part of how they got to the point they are now. It used to be that a new model launch was front page news ... that's no longer the case, and the biggest Apple stories seem to be their mistakes.

I think people don't really get how much that free media coverage has helped their sales. For a few years "tech" stories meant Apple stories.

Try Google Assistant. Most of the studies and tests show it's far more usable than Siri. It still misses things too of course.
Nerdfest··on Is Windows 10 still telling what you're doing even if you don't want it to?
KDE these days has pretty much earned my forgiveness for the last couple of bid re-dos. It's a really fantastic DE again.
Nerdfest··on Is Windows 10 still telling what you're doing even if you don't want it to?
You can run fully transparent updates in Linux using tools from Canonical, Oracle, etc. I have absolutely no idea how people put up with how badly Windows does updates, and really, XBox is not far behind.
Nerdfest··on Is Windows 10 still telling what you're doing even if you don't want it to?
While not a 'normal' user as such, I've used only Linux at home and at work (Win VM at work occasionally for rare corporate stuff). I develop software, control my guitar amp and audio equipment, play video games, do photo processing, watch videos ....

No, it's not a viable alternative for everything, it's damn close. Valve is doing some incorporation of Wine into Steam that should make many "Windows-only" games play effortlessly.

Don't use Linux if you don't want to obviously, but complaining because you can't play all games written for a completely different OS is a valid complaint. If you know people that are concerned about surveillance and privacy, don't scare them away. At least tell people about multi-boot.

Nerdfest··on A portmanteau of every word in English (2015)
This is somewhat useful. As an example, if I ever open a business, it will probably be called "greenbackspaceshipsychophysicshop"
Nerdfest··on I still miss my headphone jack, and I want it back
After saying I'd never get a phone without a headphone jack until Bluetooth codecs improved, I ended up getting a Pixel2XL through "reward points". It's a great phone ... and I've "only" been needed a headphone jack a dozen or so times in the six months I've had it. Not for headphone, but for other audio input or output requirements.

What an absolutely idiotic idea. I've started leaving those stupid dongles everywhere, but even they don't for with everything. Fashion over function, with an eye to more lock-in.

True, I think it's actually Adobe's.

"The amount they'd be have to pay is at most what a black hat can profit from the bug, which is necessarily less than the real damages because the black hat has to cost for fungibility."

So basically, their value.

Nerdfest··on While iPhone sales remain stagnant, Apple services hit $10B in revenue
Following the holy book of a brand, like Apple, will also lead there.
Nerdfest··on Diaspora: Hello and a big welcome to everyone arriving from Google+
There are several Android clients, including Dandelion, found in the F-Droid repository. I think there's one in the Google Play store as well. No iOS clients, but the mobile site works quite nicely.

Friendica and others will also post to both, I believe.
