Nerada··on Libra White Paper
This is seriously scary. The buy-in it's already received from some of the big financial players worries me that this might actually catch-on. Facebook is the last person I'd trust with any of my data, let alone a complete history of all my transactions.

I hope privacy is more important to the average Western Joe than it was to the Chinese. WeChat sounds like a dystopian nightmare.

Nerada··on Drones piloted by climate-change activists target Heathrow
>The FOIA response said:

>in all cases UKAB has no confirmation that a drone has flown close to an aircraft other than the report made by the pilot(s). Similarly, other than from the report of the pilot(s), UKAB has no confirmation that a drone was involved.

Nerada··on New Evidence Suggests Satoshi Nakamoto Is Paul Solotshi
No doubt posted here many times but if you haven't read it "The Mastermind" is absolutely brilliant.

Nerada··on Hledger: Robust Plain Text Accounting
Does Hledger support encrypting the ledger file? I don't mean placing the ledger in an encrypted container and mounting/unmounting as necessary, but I guess 'natively' as part of the file (think an encrypted Excel document).

I'm a GnuCash user, but my biggest gripe is not being able to encrypt my accounting file. I'd love to have it sync across my devices via x cloud platform, but I'm always paranoid about uploading anything that isn't password protected. If I was able to do that it'd be the push that gets me to switch from the GnuCash GUI to a plaintext account.

Maybe there's some other way I haven't thought of without a high barrier to entry like constantly mounting and unmounting an encrypted container to make changes.

Nerada··on The humble receipt gets a redesign
Exactly what I want out of a receipt. Exactly.

Just a QR code that translates to a csv of items and their costs.

Nerada··on Shenmue's Much-Hated Forklifts Feel Revolutionary Today
Loved Trade Wars, it feels like at least once or twice a year I'll find a BBS that has it installed and play around. Aurora 4X is definitely a descendant of this spreadsheet simulator genre. That's a great game, but I wish there was more variety in the genre for wanna-be beancounters.
Nerada··on Dogs that protect little penguins (2015)
I was unaware they were no longer called Fairy Penguins.
Nerada··on France Enters the Matrix
Thanks. I've been tossing up setting up a forum of sorts for some close friends, but I've been going back and forth on the two extremes; an obscure telnet-only accessible BBS for the nostalgia, or a Matrix/Riot page for the ease of use.
Nerada··on France Enters the Matrix
Curious if there was a reason you chose to self-host as opposed to using a public one on just starting your own room (I assume this is possible in the same way channels are in IRC)?

What was the drive to use 1, self-host and non-federate an instance of Matrix over another platform, and 2, why? With family especially, I would assume a simple WhatsApp/Signal group would have been easier for adoption.

Nerada··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
I'm actually reading through his "How To Become a Straight-A Student" right now. Nothing particularly profound, but the task tracking method is definitely helping me stay on-top of college work while having a full-time job at the same time.
Nerada··on Ask HN: Is there any money in website design for small businesses anymore?
I've tried looking for contractors in the past who can make small changes to static HTML landing pages.

I've since given up just learned to hack together changes myself as everyone on the big web design markets ignores the original request for alteration and instead spins up a $50 Wordpress theme they try and resell to me for $800.

Nerada··on Skin printer wipes years from your face [video]
Thanks! I've been scratching my head on that one for a while.
Nerada··on Skin printer wipes years from your face [video]
Completely off-topic, but I frequently see this type of word correction formatting online but have no idea where it's from.

Is this a type of emacs/vim find & replace shortcut, or is it just something that people have picked up on the internet and run with?

Nerada··on The vanished grandeur of accounting (2014)
Might be a long shot, but does she know of any blogs/articles/videos/books that get into the really dry detail of forensic accounting? I'd love to follow along a case study of people tracking down where missing money has gone, even if not for nefarious purposes and just simply misallocated, but I'm having a hard time finding anything.

I have a weird, romantic, fascination with what others might find dreadfully boring bean-counting...

Nerada··on Freenet: A Distributed Anonymous Information Storage and Retrieval System (2000) [pdf]
I'm going to assume Ontario is using the same method that the Missouri police are using above. Here's a response from Freenet outlining an 83% false-positive rate.

https://freenetproject.org/police-departments-tracking-effor...

Nerada··on Freenet: A Distributed Anonymous Information Storage and Retrieval System (2000) [pdf]
>A recent court case in the Peel Region of Ontario, Canada R. v. Owen, 2017 ONCJ 729 (CanLII), illustrated that Law Enforcement do in fact have a presence, after Peel Regional Police, located who had been downloading illegal material on the Freenet network.

I haven't looked into the architecture of Freenet, but would someone be able to give a quick rundown of how this is possible? I was always surprised there weren't more well established, long-form, human rights blogs on Freenet but maybe there are security concerns I'm not aware of.

Nerada··on The Octopus Is Smart as Heck, But Why?
What about birds? Crows display surprisingly intelligent behaviour, like understanding water displacement or fashioning tools from sticks or wire.
Nerada··on Amazon’s consumer business has turned off its Oracle data warehouse
I'm not heavily involved with databases from a development point of view, is someone able to explain why Oracle is as successful as it is? What sets them apart from what seems like a plethora of other DB systems?
Nerada··on Show HN: Millow – Stay connected with your inner circle
I'd be really interested in purchasing something like this as an Outlook add-in. I try to keep all my contacts in Outlook and synced/backed up with CalDav.
Nerada··on How I became friends with an octopus
Fun fact from Wikipedia:

>Octopus reproductive organs mature due to the hormonal influence of the optic gland but result in the inactivation of their digestive glands, typically causing the octopus to die from starvation. Experimental removal of both optic glands after spawning was found to result in the cessation of broodiness, the resumption of feeding, increased growth, and greatly extended lifespans.

Nerada··on Introducing Cloudflare Registrar
Is there an e-mail? I tried looking, but the contact form I found required me to register, and thus looping back to my original problem.

Could it be I'm using an alias of Cloudflare@mydomain.industries?

Edit: Attempting "cf@domain.industries" and receiving the same error. Assuming you're accepting .industries registrations, it could very well be my corporate firewall blocking requests to something. I'll attempt again this evening from home.

Nerada··on Introducing Cloudflare Registrar
Any chance of allowing more TLDs for the registration process? My TLD of choice for e-mail (.Industries) is considered illegitimate when attempting to register for Cloudflare.
Nerada··on Google can track surfing habits without need for HTTP cookies
Mitigated by uMatrix and other Firewall tools, no? I don't find myself ever needing to allow Google Fonts/Analytics to view a page.
Nerada··on China, Unhampered by Rules, Races Ahead in Gene-Editing Trials
Unhampered by Fear? The article states 'Rules', which is probably more apt.
Nerada··on Indistinguishable from Magic: Manufacturing Modern Computer Chips (2012) [video]
I'm just curious as to what you're doing now if you're no longer in that field.
Nerada··on Ask HN: What encrypted Dropbox alternative do you use?
Least Authority/Tahoe-LAFS

They call it S4, but it's basically a client side encryption front-end for Amazon's S3 for $25/month and unlimited storage.

Nerada··on I can no longer recommend MailChimp
Is this going to affect MailChimp's deliverability? It seems like it would, my understanding is the reason most relays and blacklists are so lenient with MailChimp is exactly because of their double opt-in policy.

Looks like they're ultimately throwing their long-term business under the bus for a short burst of extra cash.

Nerada··on Privacy
I imagine it's to target the corporate market. My company's mail app doesn't support Android devices at all because of IT Security's concerns, and we've recently begun switching user's firm-provided Samsungs and Blackberrys over to iPhones.
Nerada··on The Man Behind Windows PowerShell
>I have written few ps scripts and virtually every line, every step, every task almost always required googling.

In what way? I use PowerShell daily and hardly ever have to Google [things that I've used more than once]. I imagine if I picked up another language, I'd be Googling furiously, but that shouldn't disqualify the language.

Nerada··on Amazon Hub
Pretty much Australia Post's Parcel Lockers.
